This study characterizes changes in peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets among pediatric hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) patients. Compared to healthy controls, HLH patients exhibited significantly elevated levels of CD8⁺ T cells, with concomitant reductions in B cells, CD4⁺ T cells, DPT cells, DNT cells, and the CD4⁺/CD8⁺ T cell ratio as determined by multiparametric flow cytometry. Peripheral blood lymphocyte subpopulations were studied in 12 German shepherd dogs suffering from deep pyoderma (GSP). Twelve other healthy but matched dogs were used as controls. GSP was found to be associated with an imbalance in the CD4 and CD8 subsets (respectively 37.3 +/- 8.7% and 28.6 +/- 6.6%, as compared to 47.5 +/- 8.8% and 19.3 +/- 4.0% in the controls). CD4(+) T cells can be divided into three subsets: naive (Tn), central memory (Tcm), and effector memory (Tem) lymphocytes. These subpopulations differ in phenotype, migratory capacity, pattern of secreted cytokines, and activation threshold. Postpartum thyroiditis (PPT) is a reversible form of lymphocytic thyroiditis which has been attributed to an aggravation of preexisting subclinical autoimmune thyroiditis.
