PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes and discusses the current knowledge about the physiological roles of the sweet taste receptor in oral and extraoral tissues.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has been found in dental plaque, saliva and lingual sites. To date, taste or olfaction disorders related to H. pylori infections have never been reported. In a review of the literature we found two papers just referring to a sour taste sensation during H. pylori infection. Studies in animal models suggest that changes in taste perception may relate to infections which damage taste buds. Cronkhite-Canada syndrome was first described in 1955. The clinical features of this rare syndrome of unknown etiology include nonhereditary gastrointestinal polyposis together with diarrhea, nail dystrophy, alopecia, and hyperpigmentation of the skin. This syndrome has been divided into five clinical types based on initial symptoms. We describe a case of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome presenting with taste disturbance as the major symptom, present a comprehensive review of the literature concerning this rare syndrome, and suggest therapeutic treatment options.

The distribution and origin of neurocalcin-immunoreactive (NC-ir) nerve fibers in the taste bud and carotid body were examined by an immunofluorescence method. Alteration in the number of taste buds on the soft palate (SP), fungiform (FF), foliate (FL) and circumvallate (CV) papillae in the common marmoset at different postnatal ages was examined histologically. The purpose of this article was the gustatory perception state study (NaCl solution perception) in patients with one-sided damages of branchial plexus as well as of radial, facial and ulnar nervous trunks. The decrease of gustatory perception was observed in 78 (70.3%) cases, while the lack of such alterations in 33 (29.7%) patients. Citric acid detection threshold and magnitude response were measured on the anterior tongue in 10 patients with unilateral chorda-lingual nerve transections before and after repair. Fungiform taste buds were analysed by videomicroscopy. Preliminary data suggests that humans can regenerate fungiform taste buds and recover some taste sensitivity after repair.
