OBJECTIVES: To estimate the incidence, indications, risk factors, and complications associated with emergency peripartum hysterectomy at a community-based academic medical center.
METHODS: We analyzed retrospectively 47 of 48 cases of emergency peripartum hysterectomy performed at Winthrop-University Hospital from 1991 to 1997. Emergency peripartum hysterectomy was defined as one performed for hemorrhage unresponsive to other treatment less than 24 hours after delivery. A retrospective analysis of nine consecutive cases of ileosigmoid knotting (ISK) that were seen at Gondar hospital from 1993 to 1995 is presented. Ileosigmoid knotting is a condition in which the ileum and the sigmoid entangle each other to form a knot and become gangrenous. It was found that the clinical features of ISK were the results of combination of symptoms and signs of small and large bowel obstruction. The group G streptococci are beta-haemolytic streptococci which are characterised by the presence of the Lancefield group G antigen, and have been implicated in a variety of infections. The increase in immigration to the United States is associated with diseases, such as amebiasis, that are endemic to developing countries. We retrospectively reviewed 49 public-hospital patients with hepatic amebiasis occurring between 1985 and 1995. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of all pancreatograms carried out between July 1989 and June 1994.
