We conducted a case-control study to examine relationships between potential risk factors in women's prenatal occupational histories and subsequent mental retardation in their 10-year-old children. Traditionally, the concept of cotton dust-related disease focused on acute airway responses. A possible connection of long-term exposure to cotton dust with chronic obstructive airway disease was not addressed until the past two decades. This review summarizes the latest findings relevant to this topic that were observed from longitudinal cohort studies and discusses the relation between acute airway responses and chronic losses of lung function.

The objective of this study was to determine whether daytime occupational exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields (MFs) suppresses nocturnal melatonin production. Sixty female volunteers were recruited. Thirty-nine worked in a garment factory, and 21 office workers served as a reference group. Preservation of a functional level of amputation in cases of nonreplantable upper extremity amputation injury can be accomplished utilizing spare-parts technology. A case is presented in which a nonreplantable arm amputated at the mid-humeral level was used for a free ulnar forearm flap to preserve bone level and secure stable coverage.

A possible effect of chronic carbon disulfide exposure on the optic nerve was studied by giving the Farnsworth Munsell 100-Hue Test for color discrimination to 62 exposed and 40 nonexposed men. Carbon disulfide exposure did not relate to specific pattern defects in color discrimination, but impaired color discrimination occurred significantly more often in the exposed group than among the referents. The abnormal findings suggest an impairment in the receptiveness of the ganglion cells or demyelination of the optic nerve fibers.

This prospective 5-yr follow-up study of 1,241 textile workers from three mills was designed to determine the pattern and course of byssinosis in India and to distinguish this disease from chronic bronchitis. The initial prevalence of byssinosis was 14% in carding sections, 10% in spinning sections, and 11% in winding sections. In a follow-up study the prevalence of chronic respiratory symptoms and changes in ventilatory capacity were followed over a period of three years in 38 female and 28 male hemp workers in a textile industry.
