The principal mechanism of reducing sulfur into organic compounds is via the synthesis of l-cysteine. Cysteine is used for protein and glutathione synthesis, as well as being the primary sulfur source for a variety of other molecules, such as biotin, coenzyme A, lipoic acid and more. Glutathione and other cysteine derivatives are important for protection against the oxidative stress that pathogenic bacteria such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis encounter during infection. With the alarming rise of antibiotic-resistant strains of N. gonorrhoeae, the development of inhibitors

A case of occupational contact dermatitis to gold is presented. This is uncommon as gold is relatively insoluble. Allergic contact dermatitis to gold is confirmed by patch testing with gold sodium thiosulfate 0.5% in petrolatum. Occupational contact dermatitis in the gold industry can be reduced by providing workers with more protective gear and better ventilation.

Calciphylaxis presents with painful purpura and intractable skin ulcers on the trunk and particularly the distal extremities, and it mainly occurs in patients on chronic dialysis. A 66-year-old man with renal failure due to diabetic nephropathy was on peritoneal dialysis alone for 1 year, followed by peritoneal dialysis combined with hemodialysis for 3 years. He developed calciphylaxis of the penis, which was diagnosed from the skin biopsy findings and clinical observation. To treat this condition, PD was stopped and HD was performed three times a week. In addition, warfarin therapy was discon

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Calcific uremic arteriolopathy (CUA), as known as calciphylaxis, is a rare and poorly understood disease seen predominantly in end stage renal disease patients. A collaborative multidisciplinary approach to develop and implement treatment and prevention methods is described.
RECENT FINDINGS: Overall, the scientific literature on CUA is largely restricted to case reports and case series. Recent reports indicate that the incidence of CUA may be on the rise and emphasize an association with vitamin K antagonist therapy, obesity, and diabetes mellitus. Serum calcium, phosphorou

BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis is a rare syndrome of vascular calcification with subsequent cutaneous and tissue necrosis. It usually manifests as a complication of end-stage renal failure, affecting 1 to 4% of long-term dialysis patients. Very exceptionally, it can occur without chronic renal failure.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to discuss an exceptional case of extensive calciphylaxis in the absence of chronic renal failure and its successful management.
METHODS: We present a case of a 31-year-old woman with extensive proximal, ulcerated calciphylaxis without associated chronic renal

Until recently, gold allergy was considered to be extremely rare. Gold has been used and worshipped for thousands of years without any obvious complaints of skin problems, either in those participating in mining and other ways of prospecting, or in those wearing jewellery. When studies on contact allergy to gold sodium thiosulfate were published at the beginning of the 1990s, the allergic nature of the reported positive patch test reactions to gold was questioned. The major argument for such questioning was the lack of demonstrable clinical relevance in most positive reactors. A major reason f

Techniques are presented which provide direct measurement of both free cyanide (CN-) in plasma and total CN- in whole blood. Loss of total CN- from blood is prevented by conversion to cyanmethemoglobin. Both free and total CN- are assayed by a completely automated method providing readout 17 minutes after sampling. No prior isolation technique is required and sensitivity is adjustable to cover a broad range of CN- concentrations from 1 to 4000 uM. Precision of blood CN- values from 2 to 2500 uM is within +/- 2.3%. No interference results from thiocyanate or thiosulfate at a concentration of ap

1. Some in vitro studies were performed to elucidate the action of S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) and thiosulphate on liver rhodanese, delta-amino-levulinic acid dehydratase (Al A-D) and cytochrome oxidase affected by cyanide in the experimental conditions. 2. SAM was unable to interact with the sulfur substituted rhodanese complex suggesting that SAM would blockade the thiosulphate binding sites on rhodanese. 3. Cyanide and thiosulphate inhibited ALA-D activity when both compounds were present in the incubation or the preincubation mixture. Cyanide binding on the enzyme was irreversible. 4. Cy

Since the birth of cyanidation, it has been dominant in the gold extraction industry. Recently, with the increasing awareness of environmental hazards and potential risks posed by the severe toxicity of cyanide, attempts to seek alternative lixiviants have arisen. Over the past three decades, a significant amount of literature has examined alternative lixiviants to cyanide for recovering gold, while few industrial applications have been reported due to various obstacles, such as toxicity, excessive consumption, or low leaching efficiency. These obstacles are progressively overcome in multiple

The major mechanism of removing cyanide from the body is its enzymatic conversion by a sulfurtransferase, e.g. rhodanese, to the less toxic thiocyanate in the presence of a sulfur donor. Earlier results demonstrated that externally administered encapsulated rhodanese significantly enhances the in vivo efficacy of the given sulfur donor. Present studies are focused on liposomal carrier systems encapsulating rhodanese. Physicochemical properties, e.g. membrane rigidity, size distribution, surface potential, osmolarity, and viscosity, were determined for various liposomal lipid compositions and h

Calciphylaxis is a clinical syndrome of arteriolar calcification with resultant tissue necrosis, most commonly seen in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on dialysis. This condition carries a high mortality rate mainly due to infection. Helpful interventions include adequate dialytic therapy, medical management of hyperparathyroidism, hyperphosphatemia, and intravenous sodium thiosulfate therapy.

In hydrothermal ecosystems, the dissolution of sulfur dioxide in water results in the formation of sulfite, which can be used in microbial metabolism. A limited number of thermophiles have been isolated using sulfite as an electron acceptor. From a terrestrial thermal spring, Sakhalin Island, Russia, we isolated a thermophilic anaerobic bacterium (strain SLA38T). Cells of strain SLA38T were spore-forming straight rods. Growth was observed at temperatures 45-65 °C (optimum at 60 °C) and pH 5.5-9.0 (optimum at pH 6.5-7.0). The novel isolate was capable of anaerobic respiration with sulfite, thio

Metal sulfides, including acanthite (Ag2S), are persistent in the environment. In colloidal form, however, they can serve as a "Trojan horse", facilitating the mobility of trace metal contaminants. The natural processes that lead to the in situ dissolution of colloidal metal sulfides in soil are largely unknown. In this study, the dissolution of colloidal Ag2S in topsoil and Ag phytoavailability to wheat were examined in Ag2S-Cu(II)-thiosulfate systems. Cu(II) and thiosulfate strongly increased silver release (up to 83% of total Ag) from Ag2S in the dark. Electron paramagnetic resonance, X-ray

Peroxydisulfate-based advanced oxidation process has drawn increasing interest recently. Quenching the residual peroxydisulfate is essential for the accurate measurement of the concentration of target pollutants. However, it was rarely discussed which reductant is best for peroxydisulfate quenching. In this study, how the quenching of peroxydisulfate by four commonly used quenchers (methanol, ascorbic acid, sodium thiosulfate and sodium sulfite) affected the concentration of carbamazepine was investigated. Sodium sulfite reacted with carbamazepine directly, with the highest removal rate up to

Many organisms produce endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) as a by-product of protein, peptide, or L-cysteine degradation. Recent reports concerning mammalian cells have demonstrated that H2S acts as a signaling molecule playing important roles in various biological processes. In contrast to mammals, bacterial H2S signaling remains unclear. In this work, we demonstrate that Escherichia coli generates H2S through the assimilation of inorganic sulfur, without L-cysteine degradation. Comparison of phenotypes and genomes between laboratory E. coli K-12 strains revealed a major contribution of CRP (a

Cysteine is one of the two key sulfur-containing amino acids with important functions in redox homeostasis, protein functionality and metabolism. Cysteine is taken up by mammals via their diet and can also be derived from methionine via the transsulfuration pathway. The cellular concentration of cysteine is kept within a narrow range by controlling its synthesis and degradation. There are two pathways for the catabolism of cysteine leading to sulfate, taurine and thiosulfate as terminal products. The oxidative pathway produces taurine and sulfate, while the H2 S pathway involves different enzy
