Detection of Permethrin Resistance and Fipronil Tolerance in Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae) in the United States.

Permethrin is a commonly used acaricide for tick control on domestic animals and in residential environments, while fipronil use is restricted to on-animal treatment. Following widespread reports of permethrin and fipronil application failures to control indoor infestations of Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille), the brown dog tick, 31 tick populations were obtained from Florida and Texas for acaricide resistance screening. These field-collected ticks from kennels and residential facilities were challenged with technical grade permethrin and fipronil to create dose response curves that were c

The rendezvous procedure to cross complicated ureteric strictures.

Ticks are obligate hematophagous ectoparasites of wild and domestic animals and humans, and are considered to be second worldwide to mosquitoes as vectors of human diseases(1) and the most important vectors affecting cattle industry worldwide(2). Ticks are classified in the subclass Acari, order Parasitiformes, suborder Ixodida and are distributed worldwide from Arctic to tropical regions(3). Despite efforts to control tick infestations, these ectoparasites remain a serious problem for human and animal health(4,5). RNA interference (RNAi)(6) is a nucleic acid-based reverse genetic approach tha…

Trials for control of ixodid ticks using pheromone acaricide tick decoys.

Experimental application of Hyalomma dromedarii pheromone-impregnated in cyfluthrin (pyrethroid) decoys on experimentally infested camels revealed efficacy rate of 85.33%, while the control group showed normal pattern of tick engorgement. This study proved the rapid movement of males toward decoys and some males took the mounting position with such decoys. On the other side, the same decoys (H. dromedarii) when used on naturally infested cattle with Boophilus annulatus did not even disturb the Boophilus ticks indicating that B. annulatus contain specific pheromones which should be furtherly id

Occurrence of ectoparasitic arthropods associated with rodents in Hail region northern Saudi Arabia.

Ectoparasitic arthropods are a diverse element of the Saudi fauna. Due to this, a survey of ectoparasites associated with rodents was conducted as a preliminary study in five districts of Hail region of northern Saudi Arabia for the first time. Ectoparasites extracted from 750 rodents were sampled and identified by recording their frequency of appearance. Results revealed that 1,287 ectoparasites infested 316 of the captured rodent hosts. These ectoparasites parasitized on four species of rodents including three species of rats Rattus rattus rattus, Rattus rattus frugivorus, and Rattus rattus

Susceptibility to Ticks and Lyme Disease Spirochetes Is Not Affected in Mice Coinfected with Nematodes.

Small rodents serve as reservoir hosts for tick-borne pathogens, such as the spirochetes causing Lyme disease. Whether natural coinfections with other macroparasites alter the success of tick feeding, antitick immunity, and the host's reservoir competence for tick-borne pathogens remains to be determined. In a parasitological survey of wild mice in Berlin, Germany, approximately 40% of Ixodes ricinus-infested animals simultaneously harbored a nematode of the genus Heligmosomoides We therefore aimed to analyze the immunological impact of the nematode/tick coinfection as well as its effect on th

Potential impact of wildlife on the tropical bont tick eradication program in the Caribbean.

Wildlife are hosts for A. variegatum throughout its range in Africa, and have been demonstrated to serve as hosts for larvae and nymphs on several islands in the Caribbean. Studies conducted in the Caribbean have indicated that most larvae and nymphs and all adults of the tick feed on livestock; therefore, eradication can be approached through the treatment of livestock. However, since small numbers of animals such as the mongoose are infested with larvae and nymphs, these animals may represent a short-term alternative host system. Such infestations potentially could result in a presence of sm

Environmental variables serve as predictors of the invasive Asian longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann): An approach for targeted tick surveillance.

Since the 2017 discovery of established populations of the Asian longhorned tick, (Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann) in the United States, populations continue to be detected in new areas. For this exotic and invasive species, capable of transmitting a diverse repertoire of pathogens and blood feeding on a variety of host species, there remains a lack of targeted information on how to best prepare for this tick and understand when and where it occurs. To fill this gap, we conducted two years of weekly tick surveillance at four farms in Tennessee (three H. longicornis-infested and one without)

Tick-human interactions: from allergic klendusity to the α-Gal syndrome.

Ticks and the pathogens they transmit, including bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and helminths, constitute a growing burden for human and animal health worldwide. The ability of some animal species to acquire resistance to blood-feeding by ticks after a single or repeated infestation is known as acquired tick resistance (ATR). This resistance has been associated to tick-specific IgE response, the generation of skin-resident memory CD4+ T cells, basophil recruitment, histamine release, and epidermal hyperplasia. ATR has also been associated with protection to tick-borne tularemia through allergic

An established population of Asian longhorned ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) in Ohio, USA.

We describe the first known established Asian longhorned tick (ALT) (Acari: Ixodidae: Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann) population in Ohio, USA. In mid-summer 2021, we collected ALTs from an infested pasture in response to an alert that grazing cattle had been infested with ticks, and 3 of them had died. No ALTs were reported following pesticide treatment of the pasture in fall 2021. In the laboratory, we identified 9,287 ticks to species, representing all 3 life stages, as ALTs and tested 100 of the adult females for infectious agents relevant to human and animal health, including Theileria

Assessment of the risk of infestation of pastures by Ixodes ricinus due to their phyto-ecological characteristics.

This study aims to assess the relationships between the phyto-ecological characteristics of grazing pastures and their risk of being infested by the hard tick Ixodes ricinus. To that purpose, 128 pastures belonging to 20 dairy farms were observed from April to July 1994. The farms were located in western France. Assessment of the tick population was made by four monthly, blanket-dragging sessions. The average infestation rate was 40.2%. Six types of pastures were identified according to their basic phyto-ecological characteristics using a factorial analysis of correspondences followed by a hie

Interference between the viruses of tick-borne encephalitis complex in the Ixodes ricinus ticks.

The interference of two closely related viruses of the tick-borne encephalitis complex (TBE) in Ixodes ricinus ticks has been observed. 42.9 to 65.0% of dually infested ticks developed virus neutralization antibodies in mice without signs of illness, which contrasts with the control ticks infected with 198 strain only. Other explanations of this interference could include alteration of viral receptors on host cells or induction of antiviral activity in the infected ticks and/or other vectors such as mosquitoes.

Molecular characterization of the recombinant protein RmLTI-BmCG-LTB: Protective immunity against Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus.

The bovine tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is found in several tropical and subtropical regions of the world. This parasite transmits pathogens that cause disease, such as babesiosis (Babesia bovis and B. bigemina) and anaplasmosis (Anaplasma marginale). Tick infestations cause enormous livestock losses, and controlling tick infestations and the transmission of tick-borne diseases remains a challenge for the livestock industry. Because the currently available commercial vaccines offer only partial protection against R. (B.) microplus, there is a need for more efficient vaccines. Sever…

Polygenic control of Rhipicephalus microplus infestation in purebred and crossbred cattle revealed by GWAS.

Selecting cattle for enhanced resistance to ticks is essential for improving herd productivity and safeguarding animal welfare. In Brazilian production systems, tick resistance is a key factor influencing competitiveness in domestic and export-oriented beef chains. This study evaluated tick resistance in taurine and indicine cattle and their crossbreds in Rio Grande do Sul, a subtropical region where Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus infestation is highly prevalent and represents the only tick species parasitizing cattle. Breed-group differences in tick counts were quantified, and the potent
