In this project, the hypothesis of an auditory temporal processing deficit in dyslexia was tested by examining auditory processing in relation to phonological skills in two contrasting groups of five-year-old preschool children, a familial high risk and a familial low risk group. Participants were individually matched for gender, age, non-verbal IQ, school environment, and parental educational level. Psychophysical thresholds were estimated for gap-detection, frequency modulation detection, and tone-in-noise detection using a three-interval forced-choice adaptive staircase paradigm embedded wi

The focus of this paper is on the effects of age on speech perception, with reference to pertinent psychoacoustic findings. The difficulties of older listeners are related to the well-known effects of high-frequency hearing loss on speech perception in quiet, and to temporal processing declines not predictable from the audiogram that account for reduced ability to listen in complex, noisy conditions. We also discuss issues of research interpretation; e.g. the need for researchers and clinicians to be alert to the frequent confound between degree of hearing loss and age. The implications of age

Clinical observations of patients with writer's cramp suggest that abnormalities of the sensory system may be a frequent finding in this disorder. Neurophysiological data from an animal model of focal dystonia have revealed cells in somatosensory cortex with enlarged and overlapping tactile receptive fields. However, psychophysical studies so far have been unable to document a clinical correlate supporting a similar enlargement of receptive fields in humans. We compared the fingertip discrimination of the orientation of fine spatial gratings between writer's cramp and control subjects and foun

The authors' goal in this study was to probe the basis for an earlier, unexpected finding that preferred-frequency finger tapping tends to have higher frequencies and to be less stable for in-phase than for antiphase tasks. In follow-up experiments, 3 protocols were employed: a preferred-frequency replication in both coordination modes, a metronome-driven matching of the preferred frequencies to each of the coordination modes, and a frequency scaling of both modes. The original findings were affirmed for preferred frequency. Tapping to a metronome had a differential effect on in-phase and anti

In addition to their language-related difficulties, dyslexic children suffer problems in motor skill, balance, automatization and speeded performance. Given the recent evidence for cerebellar involvement in the acquisition of language fluency, these problems suggest cerebellar deficit. To test the hypothesis of cerebellar dysfunction in dyslexia, a time estimation task considered to be a sensitive index of cerebellar function was administered to matched groups of dyslexic and control children. The dyslexic children showed the predicted deficit on time estimation (among the most severe obtained

Perceptual discrimination tasks were administered to a group of normal control subjects and the following three groups of schizophrenic subjects: those currently experiencing auditory hallucinations, those who experienced auditory hallucinations in the past but not at present, and those who never experienced auditory hallucinations. No one who ever experienced visual hallucinations was included. Reaction times (RTs) and accuracy in an auditory and in a visual perceptual discrimination task were recorded. The normal subjects were generally more accurate and had faster RTs than the schizophrenic

Observations of normal old people and studies of senile psychopathology and psychoses give one grounds to think that there are certain connections between the features of senile psychics and symptoms of senile dementia. Some features of the senile psychics (the specificity of psychopathological syndromes, deterioration of the sensation of space and time reality, impoverishment of concrete sensual conceptions with retention of more general ones) that manifest as hints and tendencies in normal physiological senility become fully developed and complete in senile dementia. It is believed that cent

Strabismus is a common clinical condition in which the visual axes of the eyes do not intersect on the object being viewed. As such, the ability to achieve single binocular vision by fusing the images of a single object in the two eyes is lost. In most cases of strabismus, one of the two eyes is clearly deviated and the other eye is used for fixation, although in some cases each eye is used alternately for fixation. While much attention has been devoted to the motor capabilities of the deviating eye in strabismus, little attention has been given to the visuomotor competence of the other eye. W

BACKGROUND: Alterations in vibration perception among children and adolescents with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease might explain observed changes in foot posture. Therefore, this cross-sectional study compared the vibration perception of the lower limbs in youths with and without Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and verified the cut-off value of the distal vibration perception for the Charcot-Marie-Tooth group. In addition, associations between dynamic plantar pressure, vibration perception and isometric muscle strength were investigated.
METHODS: Participants aged 9-18 (Charcot-Marie-Tooth group n =

Speech segments are highly context-dependent and acoustically variable. One factor that contributes heavily to the variability of speech is speaking rate. Some speech cues are temporal in nature-that is, the distinctions that they signify are defined over time. How can temporal speech cues keep their distinctiveness in the face of extrinsic transformations, such as those wrought by different speaking rates? This issue is explored with respect to the perception, in Icelandic, of Voice Onset Time as a cue for word-initial stop voicing, word-initial aspiration as a cue for [h], and Voice Offset T

The aims of this study were (a) to determine whether Spanish children with reading disabilities (RD) show a speech perception deficit and (b) to explore the locus and nature of this perceptive deficit. A group of 29 children with RD, 41 chronological age-matched controls, and 27 reading ability-matched younger controls were tested on tasks of speech perception. The effect of linguistic unit (word vs. syllable) and type of phonetic contrast (voicing, place and manner of articulation) were analyzed in terms of the number of errors and the response time. The results revealed a speech perception d

Visual field loss after brain lesions is commonly determined using perimetric tests of light detection (perimetry). Many patients with visual field defects complain about perceptual difficulties in areas that are perimetrically normal. To look at a potential cause for such difficulties, we topographically determined temporal characteristics of visual information processing in those patients and compared them to those of healthy subjects. In nine patients with visual field loss we measured thresholds of double-pulse resolution (DPR), i.e., the minimum perceivable duration of a temporal gap betw

Dyslexia has been widely held to be associated with deficient temporal processing. It is, however, not established that the slower visual processing of dyslexic readers is not a secondary effect of task difficulty. To illustrate this we re-analyze data from Liddle et al. (2009) who studied temporal order judgment in dyslexia and plotted the results as d' as a function of Stimulus Onset Asynchrony (SOA). These data make it possible to compare the results of dyslexic readers and controls both in terms of d' which is related closely to task difficulty and in terms of time (i.e. SOA). It is found

Time estimation is crucial to deal with external objects, either for their timely avoidance or interaction. Studies on the effect of approaching sounds on time estimation reported that these stimuli produce time overestimations, generally interpreted as an acceleration of the internal clock due to the attention/arousal prompted by potential approaching objects. Yet, in these studies the moving sounds were also the targets of time estimations, potentially generating confounds. Here we investigated the effect of background moving sounds on the perceived duration of separate foreground stimuli. M

Auditory-motor synchronization refers to the coupling of motor responses to rhythmic auditory stimuli. This study examined finger-tapping dynamics under three conditions: self-paced tapping, tapping to metronomic stimuli, and tapping to fractal auditory stimuli. Using Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) to estimate Hurst exponents, H, and Diffusion Entropy Analysis (DEA) to estimate scaling exponents, d, in each condition, we found that self-paced tapping exhibited persistent or super-diffusive inter-tap intervals (H=0.63±0.145, d=0.64±0.097), while tapping to metronomic stimuli showed a tren

Rhythm, such as in music, contains structure in the form of rhythmic patterns: the more or less predictable successions of longer and shorter intervals (i.e., the "morse code" of the rhythm). Listeners can use rhythmic patterns to predict the timing of sounds and guide their perception and action. It is still unclear how rhythmic patterns are represented in the human mind. Here, we used a probabilistic model of auditory expectations to simulate the perception and production of rhythmic patterns. We modelled expectations in rhythmic sequences at three different levels of abstraction: as the pre

OBJECTIVES: The ability to mental time travel (MTT) consists in moving along a cognitive and spatially oriented representation of time, that is, an ideal mental time line, where past and future events are, respectively, located on the left and on the right portion of such a line. A shift of spatial attention by prismatic adaptation (PA) influences this spatial coding of time, thus affecting MTT. Here, we investigated the neural correlates of such a spatial modulation on MTT in a functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging protocol.
METHOD: To study MTT ability, participants were asked to indicate i
