The pupils of 5 elementary schools in the Dembia-District in Northethiopia were inspected in serial examinations. The transmissible skin diseases head lice infestation, tinea capitis, impetigo contagiosa and verrucae vulgares are very common among the unselected children (5 to 15 years old). Only 16% of all children had not any infectious skin disease. The investigations showed the unfortunate conditions of the poor hygiene those are existing in the rural areas of a developing country in the tropics.

Hair loss is a common problem likely to be encountered by a clinical practitioner. The most frequent causes of hair loss in pediatric patients include tinea capitis, alopecia areata, traction alopecia, and trichotillomania. In the adult population, causes to be considered are alopecia areata and hair loss associated with systemic disease and hormonal influence. The clinician must be able to separate the types and causes of hair loss into those that reflect primary dermatologic conditions and those that represent reaction to systemic disease.

Dermatophyte infections in infants and toddlers, with the exception of tinea capitis, are considered rare. We describe representative patients to illustrate the broad clinical spectrum of these infections in this age group. We review possible pathophysiologic mechanisms, diagnostic modalities, and therapeutic regimens. Our experience suggests that involvement of areas other than the scalp may be more common than current estimates suggest. Recognition of affected patients is important in view of the wide differential diagnosis and the efficacy of current treatment.

An otherwise healthy seven year-old girl was admitted to a dermatological department with a severe and progressive scalp infection that had been treated unsuccessfully with conventional antibiotics for over 14 days as well as with surgery. Examination revealed severe tinea capitis with clinical presentation of kerion Celsi, which ultimately resolved with oral antifungals over eight weeks, leaving the patient with a sizeable patch with cicatrical alopecia. The importance of early diagnosis is discussed as are various treatment modalities.

In this country radiation-induced meningiomas were usually associated with low-dose irradiation of the scalp of immigrants from North Africa, given as part of the treatment of tinea capitis. An Ashkenazi patient developed meningiomas 15 years after high-dose irradiation for a benign lesion in the parasellar region. The accumulating literature about high-dose radiation-induced meningiomas is reviewed and attention is drawn to the ever increasing number of meningiomas observed in immigrants from the former Soviet Union.

Infections may lead to a multitude of pathological skin alterations, and represent the most common diseases in pediatric dermatology. A prerequisite for successful treatment is an accurate diagnosis based on the medical history, clinical presentation and the culture of pathogens. Of importance among the bacterial skin diseases in pediatrics are impetigo, scarlet fever, borreliosis and cat-scratch fever. Dermatophytoses caused by Trichophyton or species of Microsporum affect either hair-bearing skin (scalp) (tinea capitis) or non-hair-bearing skin of the face, trunk, neck and limbs (tinea corpo…

Microsporum canis has been frequently isolated from human cases of tinea capitis and tinea corporis. The infection may be acquired from infected animals with cutaneous lesions but also from asymptomatic carriers or from the environment. As asymptomatic M. canis carriers are considered to be a critical factor in the epidemiology of dermatophytosis in humans, this study investigated the relationship between the presence of dermatophytes on the hair coats of dogs and cats without cutaneous lesions and the occurrence of the disease in their respective owners. A total of 136 dogs and 248 cats were …

Trichoscopy is an efficient, convenient, and accurate diagnostic dermatological procedure which is widely used in the examination of patients with skin diseases. Herein, we report a 56-year-old woman with a long-term history of rheumatoid arthritis complaining of pruritic patchy alopecia on her scalp who was referred for biopsy to exclude cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Taking advantage of trichoscopy, we were able to quickly diagnose tinea capitis. Following administration of the proper treatment the disease resolved completely.
