Automated segmentation of pathological cavities in optical coherence tomography scans.

PURPOSE: To develop and evaluate a method for automated segmentation and quantitative analysis of pathological cavities in the retina visualized by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) scans. METHODS: The algorithm is based on the segmentation of the gray-level intensities within a B-scan by a k-means cluster analysis and subsequent classification by a k-nearest neighbor algorithm. Accuracy was evaluated against three clinical experts using 130 bullous cavities identified on eight SD-OCT B-scans of three patients with wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and five patien

Sjögren-Larsson syndrome: optical coherence tomography and a novel mutation.

CASE REPORT: A case is presented of a thirty year-old male with ichthyosis, mental retardation, epilepsy and spasticity. Ocular examination showed a best-corrected visual acuity of 0.5 and bilateral crystalline maculopathy. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) revealed focal hyperreflective spots and intrafoveal microcystoid spaces. The diagnosis of Sjögren-Larsson syndrome (SLS) was made, and confirmed by genetic analysis. DISCUSSION: SLS is caused by mutations in the ALDH3A2 gene. A previously unreported novel mutation was identified, c.681-14T>G. Macular OCT makes it possible to find even fu

Transsynaptic retinal degeneration in optic neuropathies: optical coherence tomography study.

PURPOSE: Recently demonstrated neuronal loss in the inner nuclear layer of the retina in multiple sclerosis (MS) and glaucoma raises the question of a primary (possibly immune-mediated) or secondary (transsynaptic) mechanism of retinal damage in these diseases. In the present study we used optical coherence tomography to investigate retrograde retinal transsynaptic degeneration in patients with long-standing and severe loss of ganglion cells due to optic neuropathy. METHODS: Fifteen eyes of glaucoma patients with visual field defect limited to upper hemifield and 15 eyes of MS patients with p

Peripapillary choroidal thickness in glaucoma measured with optical coherence tomography.

As choroidal changes have been suggested in glaucoma, we examined peripapillary choroidal thickness (CT) in patients with and without primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). We collected measurements retrospectively on 70 eyes of 70 patients consecutively undergoing SD-OCT. POAG (n = 31) and suspect eyes (n = 39) had two reliable and repeatable Humphrey 24-2 visual fields with glaucoma hemifield test outside or within normal limits, respectively. A 360-degree peripapillary scan was performed using the standard protocol for retinal nerve f

Subgingival calculus imaging based on swept-source optical coherence tomography.

We characterized and imaged dental calculus using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). The refractive indices of enamel, dentin, cementum, and calculus were measured as 1.625 ± 0.024, 1.534 ± 0.029, 1.570 ± 0.021, and 2.097 ± 0.094, respectively. Dental calculus leads strong scattering properties, and thus, the region can be identified from enamel with SS-OCT imaging. An extracted human tooth with calculus is covered with gingiva tissue as an in vitro sample for tomographic imaging.

Optical coherence tomography for imaging of skin and skin diseases.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an emerging imaging technology based on light reflection. It provides real-time images with up to 2-mm penetration into the skin and a resolution of approximately 10 microm. It is routinely used in ophthalmology. The normal skin and its appendages have been studied, as have many diseases. The method can provide accurate measures of epidermal and nail changes in normal tissue. Skin cancer and other tumors, as well as inflammatory diseases, have been studied and good agreement found between OCT images and histopathological architecture. OCT also allows nonin

Optical coherence tomography characteristics of epiretinal membranes in neurofibromatosis 2.

Neurofibromatosis 2 is a neurocutaneous disorder that demonstrates unique ophthalmic manifestations. Several authors have noted a higher than expected incidence of epiretinal membranes in this population. In this brief case series, the authors document a series of optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans performed on three patients with neurofibromatosis 2 that demonstrated epiretinal membranes with atypical and distinctive characteristics. The membranes were unusually thick, with rolled edges extending into the vitreoretinal interface. The appearance of these membranes was distinct enough to
