OBJECTIVE: To study the value of loss of CD10 expression in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of follicular lymphoma (FL).
METHODS: One hundred and twenty-six cases of FL and 31 cases of reactive follicular hyperplasia (RFH) were studied with routine microscopy and immunohistochemistry.
RESULTS: Loss of CD10 expression was observed in 37 cases (29.4%) of FL. Three patterns of CD10 loss were demonstrated, as follows: diffuse CD10 loss in all of the neoplastic follicles (33/37, 89%), CD10 loss in most follicles (3/37, 8%) and CD10 loss in only a few follicles (1/37, 3%). In general, los

Poland's syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by unilateral chest wall hypoplasia and ipsilateral hand abnormalities. The literature data suggest its sporadic nature. The prevailing theory concerning its cause is hypoplasia of the subclavian artery or its branches, which may lead to a range of developmental changes. Relationships have been demonstrated between tumours and Poland's syndrome and also between tumours and other developmental defects. The explanation may lie in abnormal homeobox and tumour suppressor genes. This paper presents the first literature report of a maligna

A case report of a patient presenting with massive oropharyngeal hemorrhage originating from lymphoma of the tonsil and it's management is discussed. Locally advanced or recurrent squamous cell carcinoma may manifest with massive oropharyngeal hemorrhage, however, it is unusual for Waldeyer's ring lymphoma to present in this fashion. Management of oropharyngeal malignancies presenting in this manner includes airway control, control of hemorrhage, and biopsy of the tumor. Hemorrhage control is provided by surgical exploration or intraarterial embolization. Extranodal lymphoma of the head and ne

INTRODUCTION: In 1967, Kleinsasser first reported about basal cell adenomas in salivary glands, which represent approximately 1-2% of all salivary gland tumors. About 70% of these tumors are found in the parotid gland. Less often the minor salivary glands are involved, particularly in the upper lip region. We would like to report on a case of occurrence in the upper pole of the palatine tonsil.
CASE REPORT: A 68-year-old woman was seen, who complained about a growth in her left tonsil. Other than a slow increase size, she had no symptoms. Examination revealed a solid tumor approximately 3 cm

The authors retrospectively analyzed 103 patients to investigate the value of examination of Waldeyer's ring with biopsies as a staging procedure in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Twenty-three patients had clinical involvement of Waldeyer's ring. In 55 of 80 remaining patients, this staging procedure was performed but positive biopsy specimens were found only in patients with advanced disease. No correlation was found between positive biopsy specimens and the histologic subtype. No positive biopsy specimens of Waldeyer's ring were obtained in patients with cervical lymphadenopathy witho

In a previous communication we reported our results for patients with localized extranodal presentations of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas of the head and neck who were admitted between 1961-1969. This review describes our larger experience from 1947-1982 in treating 137 Stages I and II Waldeyer's ring patients whose slides were available for reclassification according to the modified Rappaport System. All of these patients were treated definitively as follows: radiotherapy only, 113 patients; radiotherapy and combination chemotherapy, 17 patients; chemotherapy only, seven patients. The overall 5-yea

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas are indolent neoplasms which tend to remain localized for a long time before spreading. We describe here the case of a 36-year-old woman with a low-grade MALT lymphoma involving the lung, stomach, lingual tonsil, and bone marrow at the time of diagnosis. The clonal origin of the pulmonary and bone marrow neoplastic infiltrates was assessed by means of gene rearrangement analysis. All of the involved sites were infiltrated by centrocyte- and monocytoid-like cells expressing the B-cell-associated antigens CD19 and CD20 and showed IgM lambda chai

We describe an unusual case of a basaloid squamous-cell carcinoma (BSCC) of the tonsil in a 56-yr-old man that metastasized to a primary renal-cell carcinoma (RCC) and the lung. The diagnosis of the second primary, the RCC, was based on fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology. A subsequent nephrectomy specimen revealed BSCC metastatic to RCC, clear-cell type. Retrospective analysis of the FNA of the renal mass revealed classic RCC morphology and, in addition, another cytologically distinctive pattern characterized by occasional sheets of cohesive neoplastic cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and n

The results from 156 patients with extranodal head and neck lymphomas treated at Stanford (Calif) University School of Medicine are combined with the experience of other investigators to recommend the management of these lymphomas. The tonsil and sinuses were the most common sites of presentation, and the most common histology was diffuse histiocytic lymphoma. The histologic classification systems are described as well as the use of immunohistochemistry in diagnosis. The appropriate staging procedures and the Ann Arbor staging system are discussed. Following the staging of 948 patients, 66% we

Complete surgical resection is essential for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) therapy, underscoring the need for improved intraoperative margin assessment. To advance in vivo diagnostics for OPSCC, Nanosecond infrared laser (NIRL) tissue sampling combined with shotgun lipidomic analysis reveals lipidome differences between OPSCC tissue and adjacent healthy tissue. In this study, ablations were performed on tonsil squamous cell carcinoma in 28 samples from 11 patients using an established chamber setup, and a subset of six samples from three patients with a custom-made laser fiber-

Paraneoplastic syndromes include a variety of disorders that affect the neurologic, endocrine, mucocutaneous, hematologic, and other systems as a result of neoplastic disease. Although their presentations vary, syndromes occur when tumor antigens exhibit cross-reactivity to similar antigens expressed by these systems. The antigens in the nervous system are called "onconeural" antigens. Although many disorders are associated with a comparatively high incidence of paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes, only a few cases have been associated with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tonsil. We repor

Smooth muscle tumors of the tonsil are rare. Recently, the occurrence of Epstein-Barr virus-associated smooth muscle tumor (EBV-SMT) has been increasingly recognized in immunocompromised patients, mainly post-transplantation and AIDS patients. The clinicopathologic features of EBV-SMT are different from conventional smooth muscle tumors. To the best of our knowledge, EBV-SMT involving the tonsil in an AIDS patient has not been reported. A 27-year-old man presented with a 2.2cm right tonsillar mass six months after AIDS diagnosis. The tumor was composed of a cellular proliferation of oval to sp

Spindle cell carcinomas of the tonsil are very rare tumors. We present an additional case that occurred in a 58-year-old woman. She presented with a tumor of the right tonsil. Histologic sections of tonsillar biopsies suggested that this tumor was a squamous cell carcinoma. She underwent a transoral resection of the right oropharynx. The final diagnosis was spindle cell carcinoma. We emphasize the difficulties in diagnosing this type of tumor and discuss therapeutic approaches to this rare tumor, which shows little response to radiotherapy; the literature is reviewed. We offer this case study

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the necessity of histopathologic examination for routine tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy in terms of unexpected malignancy by evaluating a large group of pediatric patients retrospectively with review of the literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all patients under the age of 19 who underwent tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy between January 1990 and January 2005 was carried out. The records were analyzed concerning each patient's age, sex, indication for surgery, type of surgical procedure and the result of histopathologic examination of

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the operative approach and reconstruction for the patients with advanced-stage tonsillar cancer.
METHOD: 7 cases with advanced-stage tonsillar cancer were operated from Dec. 1994 to May 1999. Among them, 5 cases were operated through combined neck-mandible-oral cavity approach (CNMOCA) and with immediate reconstruction. Forearm free skin (FFS) flaps were applied in 3 cases. Pectoralis major myocutaneous (PMM) flaps were applied in 2 cases. 2 other cases were operated separately through approach of oral cavity or lateral pharynx. 6 cases were operated with radical nec

It has been carried out a retrospective analysis of 34 patients suffering from carcinoma epidermoid of the tonsillar fossa being treated with two different therapies from 1989 to 1996. Twenty three of them were treated with surgery (transoral resection or bloc radical tonsillectomy with myocutaneous flap reconstruction and ipsilateral lymph node dissection). Eleven of them were treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The rate of overall survival at 5 years were 41.2%. Actuarial survival rates were (71.4%) in stages I-II and 33.3% in stages III-IV (p = 0.08). On multivariate analysis, age (
