Endodontic treatment of reimplanted avulsed teeth.

By using an appropriate storage system such as a Save-A-Tooth and having knowledge of appropriate treatment options, an avulsed tooth can be reimplanted with the greatest chance of success. Using the different categories of avulsed teeth discussed in this article as a guide, the clinician can determine the most applicable course of treatment. If endodontic treatment is based on the clinical condition of the pulp and PDL cells, the chance of success following reimplantation is improved.

Periapical repair and apical closure of a pulpless tooth using calcium hydroxide.

A case with a wide-open apex and a large cystlike periapical lesion in an adult is presented. The lesion formed as a result of necrosis from trauma to a maxillary central incisor 12 years ago. After nonsurgical endodontic treatment with calcium hydroxide paste and a calcium hydroxide-containing root canal sealer, apical closure and significant healing of the periapical lesion within 15 months were observed. This report suggests that even large periapical lesions (likely cystic) could respond favorably to nonsurgical treatment.

Stress Analysis of PDL and Apical Foramen in Traumatized Teeth With Incisal/Cervical Fiber Splinting: A Finite Element Study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Healing of the periodontal ligament (PDL) and pulp vitality is critical for successful management of traumatic dental injuries (TDI), which could be compromised due to adverse stress distributions caused by occlusal forces. As a common treatment to stabilize traumatized teeth, the impact of fiber splinting locations on the masticatory stress distribution in the PDL and dental pulp has not reached a consensus. The biomechanical effects of incisal and cervical fiber splinting on stress distribution in traumatized teeth were investigated in this study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A con

Concrescence: assessment of case by periapical radiography, cone beam computed tomography and micro-computed tomography.

The aim of this article was to describe imaging aspects of concrescence analyzed by three imaging modalities. A second molar joined together with a third molar was imaged using digital periapical radiography, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT). On periapical radiograph, the mesial root of the third molar is superimposed on the distal root of the second molar. On CBCT images, a large cementum union between bulbous roots was detected, confirming the diagnosis of concrescence. On micro-CT images, the cementum union appeared limited to the apical third of

Density value means in the evaluation of external apical root resorption: an in vitro study for early detection in orthodontic case simulations.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to develop an alternative diagnostic tool for the early detection of external apical root resorption (EARR). METHODS: Mandibular incisors (n=36) with and without simulated EARR lesions were used. 18 teeth with facial and proximal windows, each with a range of 2 sizes, were placed in 6 N hydrochloric acid (HCl) baths for 10 min. A sample of the acid solution was analysed for calcium concentration by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Incisors were imaged at 80 degrees, 90 degrees and 100 degrees under 3 test conditions (bracketed, non-bracketed and w

Effect of 8-hour intermittent orthodontic force on osteoclasts and root resorption.

INTRODUCTION: The duration of force application is an important factor in optimizing orthodontic tooth movement with less root resorption. It has previously been shown that the amount of tooth movement achieved by 8-hour intermittent force application exceeds what would be the expected by the duration. The purpose of this study was to compare osteoclast recruitment and the extent of root resorption in response to an 8-hour intermittent force regimen with those from a continuous force. METHODS: Rat molars (n = 110) were assigned to 3 groups: 8-hour intermittent force, continuous force, and con

Apical root resorption: the dark side of the root.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of apical root resorption is usually based on routine radiographs. However, these methods are limited because the images reflect the superimposition of the whole root structure and can lead to underestimation of the extent of apical root resorption. In this study, we aimed to determine the lengths of the labial and lingual surfaces of incisors with apical root resorption and compare them with the longest radicular length obtained on sagittal images of cone-beam computed tomography, and to create a qualitative visual scale of the different patterns of apical root res

Beyond the apex: anatomical risk assessment to prevent extrusion injuries in endodontics.

Extrusion of irrigants or obturation materials during endodontic therapy may result in significant complications, ranging from postoperative pain to nerve damage and chronic inflammation. Many of these adverse outcomes can be prevented through detailed anatomical assessment and thoughtful treatment planning. This article explores how anatomical complexities, including root apex morphology, proximity to vital structures, and apical resorption, contribute to extrusion risk.

Exploring etiologic contributions to the occurrence of external apical root resorption.

INTRODUCTION: External apical root resorption (EARR) is often an undesirable sequela of orthodontic treatment. Prior studies have suggested a substantial link between EARR and certain genetic components. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) may play a role as predisposing factors. This study aimed to investigate the potential association between EARR and various SNPs. METHODS: The study included 218 orthodontic participants of all malocclusions who had available pretreatment and posttreatment panoramic radiographs. The most severely affected maxillary incisor on the radiograph was assessed
