Oral rehabilitation of a bulimic patient: a case report.

Bulimia nervosa is among the most common health problems in contemporary society. It is a self-induced weight loss syndrome associated with distinct dental manifestations involving physical and psychologic symptoms. It is characterized by recurrent binge-purge episodes that occur at least once a day. This article describes the complete-mouth rehabilitation of a bulimic patient with a generalized enamel erosion of her dentition and a poor esthetic appearance. Porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations were used as the definitive treatment. Good esthetics and high self-esteem were the final results.

The dental status of cerebral palsied children.

The prevalence of dental disease, the types and quality of dental care, and the provision of services were assessed for 150 cerebral palsied children (mean age 10.25 years) attending special schools in Leeds and compared with a matched control group of 191 children (mean age 10.39 years). Similar dental caries experience existed in the two groups, but study children had more extracted and unrestored teeth, and fewer and poorer quality restorations than control children. Oral hygiene and gingival health were worse in the study group, which also exhibited delayed eruption and higher levels of to

Osteitis pubis ameliorated after tooth extraction: a case report.

Osteitis pubis is a non-infective inflammation of the symphysis pubis, which is known to be associated with trauma, athletic exertion, urological or gynecological surgery, or with rheumatic conditions such as seronegative spondyloarthropathies. In this report, we describe a case of osteitis pubis whose symptoms were completely ameliorated following tooth extraction attributable to periodontitis. A 57-year-old female patient developed osteitis pubis, presenting with pain in the groin area with an elevated Creactive protein (CRP; 4.4 mg/dl) and radiological erosive changes in symphysis pubis. Obesity, Pocrescophobia and Oral Health.

Oral health plays a crucial role in obesity management. Scientific evidence suggests an association between obesity and oral diseases, including periodontal disease, dental caries, tooth erosion, xerostomia, and dentinal hypersensitivity. Maintaining optimal oral health is essential for obese patients, as compromised dentition or oral discomfort can influence dietary habits. However, managing oral health in obese individuals can be challenging due to anatomical limitations and lifestyle choices. Profound knowledge of obesity and its manifestations, the oral health professionals need to raise a…

Oral and Physical Manifestations of Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa.

Food avoidance and disordered eating behavior are hallmarks of the psychopathologic disorders known as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa is characterized by severe restriction of food intake, which leads to weight loss and the medical consequences of starvation. Bulimia nervosa is characterized by attempts to curtail food intake, interspersed with binge eating, followed by self- induced vomiting to rid the body of food. Tooth erosion and heightened sensitivity, caused by tooth contact with gastric acid during vomiting, are among several intraoral signs and symptoms of anor…

Three patient reports illustrating the use of dentin adhesives to cement crowns to severely worn teeth.

PURPOSE: Severely worn and broken down teeth present clinical treatment planning dilemmas. Extreme examples of worn teeth present in patients suffering from bulimia nervosa and dentinogenesis imperfecta. Bulimia nervosa typically presents early in adult life with a myriad of clinical features and a most important dental sign of eroded palatal surfaces on the maxillary teeth. Dentinogenesis imperfecta is a relatively uncommon disorder that presents with varying severity of unsupported enamel and results in teeth more susceptible to wear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dental treatment for both conditi

Chemical composition, cytotoxicity, antimicrobial, antibiofilm, and anti-quorum sensing potential of Mentha Piperita essential oil against the oral pathogen Streptococcus mutans.

Dental caries is a highly prevalent oral disease affecting billions of individuals globally. The disease occurs chemically as a result of breakdown of the tooth surface attributed to metabolic activity in colonizing biofilm. Biofilms, composed of exopolysaccharides and proteins, protect bacteria like Streptococcus mutans, which is notable for its role in tooth decay due to its acid-producing abilities. While various antimicrobial agents may prevent biofilm formation, these drugs often produce side effects including enamel erosion and taste disturbances. This study aimed to examine utilization

Intraoral Scanning for Monitoring Dental Wear and Its Risk Factors: A Prospective Study.

Dental wear arises from mechanical (attrition or abrasion) and chemical (erosion) factors. Despite its prevalence and clinical significance, accurately measuring and understanding its causes remain challenging in everyday practice. This one-year study with 39 participants involved comprehensive examinations and full-arch intraoral scans at the start and after 12 months. Volume loss exceeding 100 µ on each tooth's surfaces (buccal, lingual/palatine and incisal/occlusal) was measured by comparing three-dimensional scans from both time points. This study also assessed factors such as abrasion and

Brushing-induced effects with and without a non-fluoride abrasive dentifrice on remineralization of enamel surfaces etched with phosphoric acid.

The remineralization of acid-etched enamel after brushing with and without a non-fluoride abrasive dentifrice was investigated using scanning electron microscopy after sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) or ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid treatment, of the specimens. Ground enamel pieces were etched with 30% phosphoric acid for 60 s and attached to resin plates. They were exposed to the oral environment of 4 subjects for 8 weeks and brushed for 1 min daily. Paste and brushing caused the acid-etched enamel to erode selectively, i.e., deep grooves were formed in the prism peripheral regions, while pro
