This case report describes the orthodontic treatment used to prepare for restorative dentistry, aimed at the functional rehabilitation of an adult patient with Class I malocclusion, right posterior crossbite, and significant tooth wear on the palatal face of the maxillary canine to canine. The orthodontic treatment was performed with a total fixed appliance mini-expandex-type expander, associated with vertical elastics. Good dental intercuspation was obtained and enabled conditions for the restoration of the abrasions on the palatal surfaces of the maxillary incisors and canines and the tips o…

Bruxism is an oral behavior that may lead to repetitive jaw-muscle activity characterized by clenching or grinding of the teeth and/or by bracing or thrusting of the mandible with 2 distinct circadian manifestations: sleep bruxism or awake bruxism. They share common risk factors and lead to similar consequences for the masticatory system but may have different etiology and pathophysiology. This oral behavior has been associated with tooth wear, masticatory muscle tenderness, headaches, and painful temporomandibular disorders. Available scientific evidence does not support the view that bruxism…

The periodontal condition of 300 Turkish troops was investigated using the modified Ramfjord Periodontal Disease Index. In addition, the gingival condition, presence and quantity of plaque and calculus, location and depth of periodontal pockets, tooth mobility, presence and severity of wear facets, diastema magnitude and the DMFT Index were determined. The average PDI was 3.8. Nearly 98% of the recruits suffered from gingivitis, 68% of whom exhibited moderate to severe inflammation without involvement of deeper structures. Moderate plaque accumulation and heavy calculus deposits were observed.

Development of dental abnormalities due to improper occlusal wear is common among modern domestic horses. This phenomenon often is attributed to jaw conformation. Rostral mandibular hooks may develop in horses with underjet or mandibular prognathism, a condition where the lower jaw protrudes forward, beyond the upper jaw. Less abrasive diet, free of phytoliths and matrix-like plant fibers, also may promote enamel and focal overgrowths of equine dentition. Here we report a rostral mandibular hook in a lower premolar tooth of a medieval horse, found in a spring deposit in Levänluhta, Osthrobothn

In the present study the age-related morphological characteristics of 948 equine incisors were investigated. After extraction, total incisival length and root length were measured at the vestibular side of the teeth. Equine incisors reach their maximal length 2-3 years after eruption. Notwithstanding severe occlusal wear, this maximal length is maintained during most of the horses' life due to prolonged root formation. Root formation, at the rate of 2.5 mm per year, starts at the age of 5-6 years and continues until the age of 17. As the root of the incisor develops, its apical foramen narrows

An experimental model designed for the investigation of tooth transplantation immunobiology is presented together with the results of a long-term histological study of mature mouse tooth isografts transplanted to an intrabony site (tibial shaft medulla) and to an extrabony site (renal subcapsular site). Mature mouse mandibular third molars were isografted to the tibial shaft medulla and renal subcapsular kidney site in inbred C57BL/6 strain mice and observed histologically over a 6-month period. Isografts at both sites were observed to undergo initial pulpal degeneration with subsequent progre

The clinical syndrome known as posterior bite collapse (PBC) consists of multiple, often pathognomonic factors that deviate from normal, or an occlusion wherein the posterior occlusion is compromised and may ultimately destroy the functional protective capacity of the entire dentition. Secondary clinical sequelae may include accelerated periodontitis progression, temporomandibular disorders (TMD), increasing mobility/fremitus, additional tooth loss, anterior flaring, and loss of occlusal vertical dimension. Etiologic factors may include tooth loss without replacement, orthodontic malocclusions

New materials (restorative and adhesive) for the treatment of cervical abrasions have produced better results in terms of esthetics (choice and stability of colors) and duration (marginal fit and wear resistance). Nevertheless, conservative restoration of cervical abrasion cannot be considered the most suitable treatment in certain clinical situations: (1) when the abrasion defect involves the root surface, either exclusively or primarily; (2) when a site has difficult esthetic demands resulting from excessive tooth length with gingival recession; and (3) in the presence of root caries. Maintaining healthy teeth and soft oral tissue is important. Clinical research has shown manual toothbrushes with end-rounded filaments to cause significantly less gingival abrasions than those without end-rounding. Tapered filaments are an alternative to end-rounded filaments, but there is no solid evidence for their effectiveness. For the interdental spaces that the toothbrush doesn't reach, the use of special oral hygiene aids is advised. Clinical studies of gingivitis patients have shown that both interdental brushes and plastic-rubber bristles reduce gingivitis after 4 weeks of use. Plast

Two forms of non-carious dental disorder - erosive tooth hard tissue loss and dental erosion - have been increasingly observed in recent years. Dental erosion is the chemical loss of dental hard substances caused by exposure to acids not derived from oral bacteria. Mechanical forces from, for example, the tongue, the cheeks or toothbrushing, increase loss of partly-demineralized tooth surfaces and the cumulative loss of dental hard tissue is defined as erosive tooth wear (ETW). Dental hard tissue losses which occur because of very frequent acid exposure, such as through increased vomiting, but…

Tooth enamel-the highly mineralized outer layer shielding teeth from mechanical and chemical wear-is produced during development by specialized dental epithelial (DE) cells called ameloblasts. Functional enamel is challenging to regenerate because the enamel-forming cells-DE-derived ameloblasts-disappear even before tooth eruption. To achieve regeneration, DE and dental mesenchymal (DM) need to interact. Current in-vitro models encompass only limited DE-DM interaction as they offer little control over the interface geometry and usually force both lineages to share a single, sub-optimal medium,

Diabetes and salivary gland dysfunction are major factors that induce dental caries in experimental animals, but there are no reports analyzing the association of dental caries and salivary glands in an animal model of diabetes mellitus (DM). To clarify the initial development of dental caries and preceding salivary gland disorder, we performed a histopathological analysis on teeth and salivary glands in diabetic Wistar rats 7 weeks after alloxan treatment (DM group) in comparison with nondiabetic rats (Non-DM group) and functional analysis on saliva secretion during the experimental period. Since the first introduction of the Cerec system (Sirona) in the early 1980s, the use of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) technology has spread widely in modern adhesive dentistry. Thanks to this innovative technology, it has been possible to carry out chairside restorations fully managed by the clinician, with the advantages of lower costs for the patient, more rapid execution of the restorations, and the exclusion of the provisional phase. With further improvements in chairside technologies and materials, specifically in the field of composite resin blocks, it is no

Bruxism is a rhythmic masticatory muscle activity, characterized by teeth grinding and clenching. This is a phenomenon mainly regulated by the central nervous system and peripherally influenced. It has two circadian manifestations, during sleep (sleep bruxism) and awake states (awake bruxism). Bruxism is much more than just tooth wearing. It is currently linked to orofacial pain; headaches; sleep disorders; sleep breathing disorders, such as apnea and hypopnea sleep syndrome; behavior disorders, or those associated with the use of medications. It is also influenced by psycho-social and behavio…

When determining an age estimate from adult skeletal remains, forensic anthropologists face a series of methodological choices. These decisions, such as which skeletal region to evaluate, which methods to apply, what statistical information to use, and how to combine information from multiple methods, ultimately impacts the final reported age estimate. In this study, a questionnaire was administered to 145 forensic anthropologists, documenting current trends in adult age at death estimation procedures used throughout the field. Results indicate that the Suchey-Brooks pubic symphysis method (19

BACKGROUND: Previous studies focused on the dental caries status of East African children and not on their overall dental needs. Urban children consume more sugar-rich foods.
OBJECTIVES: To assess overall dental treatment needs of children living in an orphanage in Uganda.
STUDY DESIGN: Teeth were diagnosed as needing treatment by obvious frank carious lesions (WHO criteria), temporary fillings, staining, or very deep pit and/or fissures possibly requiring sealants. Calculus or crowding in the mandibular anterior region and evidence of tooth fractures were recorded, as were signs of wear on
