Safety and Clinical Evaluation of a Sonic Tongue Brush.

BACKGROUND: Tongue coating consists of oral bacteria, desquamated epithelium, blood cells, and food residues and is involved in periodontal disease, halitosis, and aspiration pneumonia. Recently, a tongue brush with sonic vibration was developed to clean the tongue. This comparative study examined the extent of tongue coating, its effects on the tongue, bacterial count particularly on the posterior dorsum of the tongue, and the degree of pain using a manual tongue brush and the newly developed sonic tongue brush. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients' extent of tongue coating and the quantity of ba

The Journey of Oral Hygiene: The Past, the Present, the Future.

This narrative review traces the evolution of personal oral hygiene from antiquity to the present, examining the shift from rudimentary tools to evidence-based, technologically advanced systems. Historical developments were reviewed alongside current clinical research, including systematic reviews and professional guidelines (e.g., EFP S3-level), to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and behavioral aspects of oral hygiene practices. Oral hygiene has progressed from ancient chewing sticks to modern powered toothbrushes and interdental devices. While manual toothbrushes remain effective, oscillating

Evaluation of the effectiveness of novel oral hygiene aids in the prevention of gingival diseases in children and adolescents with special healthcare needs - A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Due to a lack of manual dexterity, impaired cognitive and general development, and awareness of caregivers, special children are not able to maintain good oral health. This leads to the development of dental plaque, gingival inflammation, and further periodontal diseases. It is, thus, necessary for dentists and caregivers to understand which of oral hygiene aids can be best suited for a child with special healthcare needs. The aim of this review is to evaluate the most efficacious oral healthcare aids in children and adolescents with special healthcare needs. MATERIALS AND METHODS

Prevalence of tooth sensitivity in patients not previously treated periodontally.

BACKGROUND: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a transient pain triggered by thermal, tactile, or osmotic stimuli, commonly linked to exposed dentinal tubules. Its relationship with untreated periodontal disease, however, remains underexplored. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective epidemiological study was conducted at a specialized periodontics clinic and included 930 patients diagnosed with periodontal disease. Patients with a history of periodontal treatment, or other potential causes of DH, were excluded. Participants completed a questionnaire assessing habits and symptoms related to DH. Bi

Oral health status among the transgender population of India: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The invisibility of the transgender population within official records, combined with other socio-economic factors, impacts oral health status among transgender people. Hence, our systematic review and meta-analysis aim to generate a pooled estimate of the oral health status of the transgender community in India. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic search was performed across four databases. The studies included a quantitative research design conducted in India and involved self-identified transgender individuals. The pooled prevalence was determined at a 95% confidence interval (C

Efficacy of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution in cleaning tongue coating before and after surgery: a randomized phase II study.

BACKGROUND: Increased bacterial presence in the tongue coating and thereby, the saliva, may be a risk factor for postoperative complications such as surgical site infection or postoperative pneumonia after cancer surgery. However, no method for cleaning tongue coating has been established experimentally. The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of brushing with 3% hydrogen peroxide on suppression of the number of bacteria in tongue coating. METHODS: Sixteen patients with gastric cancer or colorectal cancer undergoing surgery were randomly allocated to control and intervention groups

A comparative evaluation of manual and powered brushing on oral health and microbial status of mentally challenged individuals.

BACKGROUND: Tooth brushing is a very simple and effective method for removing daily dental deposits and for preventing dental and periodontal diseases. In physically or mentally challenged person, there arises difficulty in oral hygiene maintenance so that oral hygiene methods may need to be simplified or modified to suit the individual situation. METHODOLOGY: Thirty individuals of age group 15-30 years with mild to moderate degree of mental retardation were selected. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Are Able to Maintain Dental Skills: A Two-Year Case Review of Desensitization Treatment.

Purpose: The purposes of this study of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), who had successfully accepted a dental examination seated in a dental chair following desensitization interventions, were to: (1) determine if ability to accept an examination was maintained two years following initial success; (2) quantify new dental skills acquired; and (3) analyze the use of advanced behavior guidance techniques. Methods: This retrospective two-year case series included 138 ASD children. Data were obtained from dental records. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and Fisher's exact test

Staphylococcal species in the oral cavity from patients in a regional burns unit.

The aim of this study was to perform a quantitative and qualitative analysis of oral carriage of staphylococci in a range of oral specimens from patients admitted to a regional burns unit. The study recruited 28 patients and reasons for admittance were: burns (46%), skin grafting (39%), lacerations (7%), scalding (4%) and necrotizing fasciitis (4%). No patient had smoke inhalation injuries or trauma to the oro-pharynx. There were five patients from whom methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MRSA) could be detected in oral specimens. For three patients only the wound and oral specimens were positive

Impact of toothpaste use on the subgingival microbiome: a pilot randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The subgingival microbiome plays a key role in the gingivitis development, but the impact of toothbrushing with toothpaste on the subgingival microbial composition is not well understood. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the microbiological safety and subgingival impact of a toothpaste containing CPC and cymenol, compared to a fluoride-based toothpaste, and assessed overall subgingival microbiome changes after 6 weeks of routine toothbrushing in patients with gingival inflammation. METHODS: A 6-week randomized clinical trial was conducted in patients with gingival inflammat…
