The authors consider the specific features of development ofa Fasciolopsis buski trematode in the environment and intermediate and final hosts. It has been ascertained that under the conditions of Vietnam, the eggs may develop in the temperature range of 20 to 34 degrees C, which takes 20 to 51 days. The eggs die at less than 12 degrees C. As a new intermediate host of the trematode, the authors have registered the mollusk Indoplanorbis exutus, the development of the parasite in which occurs within 32-37 days at 27-33 degrees C. Invasiveness of adolescaria reduces with age. The parasite develo

BACKGROUND: Fish are common intermediate hosts of trematode cercariae and their gills can potentially serve as important sites of penetration by these larval stages. We experimentally tested the hypothesis that volume of ventilation flow across the gills contributes to acquisition of these parasites by fish. We manipulated the intensity of ventilation by using different oxygen concentrations.
METHODS: Juvenile Oncorhynchus mykiss were individually exposed for 10 minutes to a standard dose of Diplostomum pseudospathaceum cercariae at three levels of oxygen concentration, 30, 60 and 90%. Ventil

Naturally, a wide range of genetic and environmental variables predominate, such as bacterial, viral, and parasite infective entities that have been identified as carcinogenic bioagents. Many helminth and protozoan parasitic diseases are liable to cause human cancer. Conveniently, three trematode parasites viz. Schistosoma haematobium, Opisthorchis viverrini, and Clonorchis sinensis have been reported to be intrinsically linked with human cancer. Similar studies for other parasitic infections are still imprecise and need further validation. Plasmodium falciparum is known to cause holoendemic B

Schistosomiasis is a group of both acute and chronic parasitic trematode infections of the genus Schistosoma. Research into schistosomiasis has been minimal, leading to its classification as a neglected tropical disease, yet more than 140 million people are infected with schistosomes globally. There are no treatments available for early-stage infections, schistosomal dermatitis, or Katayama syndrome, other than symptomatic control with steroids and antihistamines, as the maturing organisms seem to be mostly resistant to typical antiparasitics. However, praziquantel (PZQ) has been the drug of c…

Fasciola hepatica is a trematode parasite of significant veterinary and public health importance, causing economic losses in livestock due to liver damage, weight loss and reduced milk production. Although triclabendazole (TCZ) is available for treatment, it does not prevent the disease or reinfection. Infected animals exhibit strong immunoregulation, increasing susceptibility to secondary infections and altering vaccine-induced antibody responses. This study investigates the humoral immune response in cattle infected with F. hepatica at different stages of infection and evaluates the effect o

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease inflicting significant morbidity in humans worldwide. The disease is caused by infections with a parasitic trematode belonging to the genus Schistosoma. Over 250 million people are currently infected globally, with an estimated disability-adjusted life-years of 1.9 million attributed to the disease. Current understanding, based on several immunological studies using experimental and human models of schistosomiasis, reveals that complex immune mechanisms play off each other in the acquisition of immune resistance to infection/reinfection. Neverthe

Cholangiocarcinomas are malignant tumors arising from the bile ducts. One of the factors associated with the development of malignancy is parasitic infections by helminths trematodes that cause liver fluke infections. This association is very common in south-east Asia, but association with liver hydatidosis has not been reported in the scientific literature. We report a case in which these two diseases were associated and required non-radical surgical treatment, since radiological findings were not suspicious for these entities.

Cancer deaths are increasing year by year worldwide. Many factors contribute to the development of cancer, including genetic and epigenetic factors, as well as environmental factors such as diet, physical activity, stimulants (tobacco, alcohol), exposure to excessive UV radiation, stress, and infections. In recent years, many studies have shown a strong correlation between parasitic infections and the oncogenic process leading to the development of human cancers. Studies indicate an association between progressive inflammation, risk of infection, or bacterial/viral co-infection during parasito

Amphistomes, commonly referred to as 'stomach' or 'rumen' flukes because of the localization of these flukes in the stomach of ruminants, are digenetic trematodes distinguished by the absence of an oral sucker and the position of the ventral sucker or acetabulum at the posterior end of the body. The body is characterized by a leaf-like fleshy structure, pink or red with a large posterior sucker. Amphistomes are an important group of parasites since they cause 'amphistomiasis' (variously known as paramphistomosis/amphistomosis), a serious disease of great economic importance in ruminants worldw

The aim of this study was to describe a new species of Didymozoidae (Trematoda) found in the mesentery of Euthynnus alletteratus (Rafinesque) off Cabo Frio, in the coastal area of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Thirty specimens of E. alletteratus were obtained between August 2023 and June 2024, directly from traders who sell fresh fish in markets. The parasites were fixed in AFA (93% ethanol 70%, 5% formaldehyde and 2% glacial acetic acid) with or without compression, stained with Langeron's hydrochloric carmine, dehydrated in an alcohol series, clarified in clove oil and mounted in Cana

Liver and intestinal flukes (LIF) are important groups of foodborne zoonotic trematodes (FZTs) in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. Their complex life cycles require specific freshwater snail species as the obligatory first intermediate hosts. In 2019, we conducted a longitudinal study in Yen Bai and Thanh Hoa provinces in North and Central Vietnam, respectively, to investigate the diversity of LIF and their infection prevalence in relation to snail host abundance and environmental factors. Using a combination of morphological and molecular identification techniques, we identified 10 LIF spec

Philophthalmosis is a zoonotic ocular disease that affects mainly domestic and wild avian species in different parts of the world. However, aspects related to its epizoology in domestic animals are not completely known. In the present study, 47 Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata), 8 mallards (Anas platyrhynchos platyrhynchos) and 6 African geese (Anser cygnoides), free-living in an urban lake in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, were evaluated for eye fluke infection. The animals were manually contained, and the conjunctival sac and nictitating membrane were evaluated by direct ophthalmic exam

Some trematode metacercariae, including marine digeneans belonging to the genus Cryptocotyle, induce black spots in target tissues due to the attraction of fish host melanophores. To promote precise quantification of infection, the counting of black spots has to be confirmed by reliable quantification of metacercariae after tissue digestion. This process ensures the isolation of undamaged parasites for morphological and molecular identification. The aim of this work was to optimize the pepsin digestion protocol and to assess the duration of viability of Cryptocotyle metacercariae in fish post-

Clinostomum Leidy, 1856 (Trematoda: Clinostomidae) is a cosmopolitan, zoonotic genus of fluke that has been poorly studied in an Australian setting. Following previous reports of reservoir fish in Australian fish ponds being heavily infected with Clinostomum metacercaria, the current study was conducted to determine the specific identity of Clinostomum sp. in inland Australia, by examining and characterizing parasites collected from a potential definitive host, cormorants. A total of 33 parasite specimens belonging to the genus Clinostomum were collected from two cormorants (little black cormo

Molecular data have transformed approaches to trematode taxonomy by providing objective evidence for the delineation of species. However, although the data are objective, the interpretation of these data regarding species boundaries is subjective, especially when different markers conflict. Conserved markers can lead to an underestimation of richness and those used for finer species delineation have the capacity to inflate species recognition, perhaps unrealistically. Here we examine molecular and morphological evidence for species recognition in an especially confusing system, the lepocreadii

Some fish blood flukes of the genus Cardicola (Aporocotylidae) are considered important pathogens of farmed/ranched tuna, Thunnus spp. Infections with Cardicola spp. might obstruct the blood flow in the gills via massive accumulations of eggs and often lead to mass mortalities in captive tuna. At present, oral administration of an anthelminthic drug, praziquantel is the most effective treatment, but the tuna farming industries are seeking non-drug control measures. Development of prophylactic and holistic measures have been difficult, owing to a lack of basic knowledge about these parasites. U

Ongoing debate over the relationship between biodiversity and disease risk underscores the need to develop a more mechanistic understanding of how changes in host community composition influence parasite transmission, particularly in complex communities with multiple hosts. A key challenge involves determining how motile parasites select among potential hosts and the degree to which this process shifts with community composition. Focusing on interactions between larval amphibians and the pathogenic trematode Ribeiroia ondatrae, we designed a novel, large-volume set of choice chambers to assess
