The neglected tropical disease trichuriasis is caused by the whipworm Trichuris trichiura, a soil-transmitted helminth that has infected humans for millennia. Today, T. trichiura infects as many as 500 million people, predominantly in communities with poor sanitary infrastructure enabling sustained faecal-oral transmission. Using whole-genome sequencing of geographically distributed worms collected from human and other primate hosts, together with ancient samples preserved in archaeologically-defined latrines and deposits dated up to one thousand years old, we present the first population geno…

Trichuriasis, caused by the whipworm Trichuris trichiura, is endemic in tropical and subtropical areas, affecting approximately 1 billion people. Child anthelminthic treatment programmes are being implemented but repeated treatments are costly, may prevent the development of acquired immunity and can lead to the development of drug resistant parasites. Thus, the development of a vaccine which would lead to the acquisition of immunity at an earlier age and reduce community faecal egg output would be beneficial. Development of subunit vaccines requires the identification of protective antigens a…

Two commercially available diagnostic tools (Tro-Bio ELISA and ICT card test) were used to detect circulating filarial antigen of Wuchereria … from patients with helminthic infections (schistosomiasis, echinicoccosis, hookworm, ascariasis and trichuriasis). All 32 positive sera with the Trop-Bio ELISA showed a positive ICT card reaction (specificity and sensitivity 100%). It is concluded that, in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states, where a continuous flow of south- and southeastern workers coming fro …

Parasitic infections are a major worldwide health problem, and they account for millions of infections and deaths each year. Most of the inf … parasites causing these infections are the helminthes (ascariasis, strongyloidiasis, enterobiasis, trichuriasis, and schistosomiasis) and the protozoa (Isospora, Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, Trypanosoma cruzi, Giardia lamblia, and Balantidium coli). This article summarizes the salient features of each parasite with respect to epidemiology, transmission, patho …

Embryonated eggs of the pig whipworm Trichuris suis (TSOee) constitute the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in a medicinal product explored in human clinical trials against several immune-mediated diseases. The measurement of TSO biological potency (hatchability and infectivity) is a requirement for the assessment of TSO's pharmacological potency in human clinical trials. The present study aims to validate the dose-dependent establishment of T. suis larvae in Göttingen minipigs and eventual clinical implication of a dose range (1000-10,000 TSO). Four groups of 5 minipigs were inoculated

BACKGROUND: Capillaria aerophila, Capillaria boehmi and Trichuris vulpis are trichuroid nematodes affecting wild and companion animals all over the World. The canine intestinal whipworm, T. vulpis, is the most common and well- known in veterinary practice, whereas the respiratory C. aerophila and C. boehmi have been rarely reported in pets as a likely consequence of overlapping morphometric and morphological features of the eggs, which impair a correct etiological diagnosis.
FINDINGS: In December 2011, a mixed infestation by T. vulpis, C. aerophila and C. boehmi was diagnosed in an asymptomat

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies have been carried out on adult and ova of T. trichura to provide the additional topographical details which are not obtainable by the light microscopy. The egg of T. trichura has a chitinous shell which consists of layers of dense lamellae and bordered by a limiting membrane. An operculum and a collar made of chitin form the opercular area. The lamallae of the egg shell are diffuse with numerous micropores. Cuticular pores are found scattering on the surface of the adult T. trichuira. The spicule sheath in male is cylindrical and covered with spines o

Intestinal parasites infections are common in the state of Bahrain, but the incidence is decreasing due to improvement in health and social standards. A community-based study sample of all population of Bahrain was done including all ages and nationalities. From 1st July 1984 to 28th February 1986, the first community-based study sample of all population of Bahrain was done including all ages and nationalities. A total number of 2123, about 0.006 of the population of 1981 census was chosen for the study. The study shown that 739 persons were infected with intestinal protozoa and helminths. The

Whipworms collected from llamas (Lama glama) in Oregon were identified as Trichuris tenuis Chandler, 1930. A redescription, based on the specimens collected from llamas and examination of the paratypes, is presented. The unique form of the cloaca in T. tenuis separates males of this species from all other species of Trichuris known to occur in ruminants. Among species of Trichuris for which adequate descriptions of the female exist, T. tenuis can be distinguished using an array of characters including an uneverted, aspinous vulva and a highly convoluted vagina with papillalike spines in the pr

Concurrent infection of Citrobacter freundii and Trichuris trichiura in a Patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas) is reported. A synergistic effect of both organisms contributing to host mortality in this case is suggested.

Eggs of Trichuris trichiura were prepared for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) by the dimethylsulfoxide freeze-cracking method. The egg-shell and oocyte were examined by SEM. The egg has a chitinous shell which consists of more than 10 layers of dense lamellae. The shell is bordered by a limiting membrane. An operculum and a collar made of chitinous shell together form the opercular area. The operculum is an empty cavity. The chitinous fibers of the egg-shell in this area are diffuse and loose, with numerous micropores or spaces. The egg-shell in this area therefore appears to form a fine tu

The embryonal development of Trichocephalus trichiurus and Eucoleus oesophagicola is described. Clevage of both species is full, bilaterally-symmetrical, determined. At the two blastomere stage the epidermis material is localized in the anterior one. The development of both species lacks the rhomb figure characteristic of nematodes. The mouth opening breaks independent of blastopore. The stylet anlage formation was noted for T. trichiurus.

A 33 year-old woman was admitted with chief complaint of abdominal pain and high fever. A barium-enema showed serration and a tumor was seen in the proximal ascending colon. At laparotomy, a localized tumor about 5 cm in diameter was located in the proximal portion of the ascending colon. The operation was made according to the ileoceal resection. On the macroscopic examination of the resected specimen, a small hole penetrating into the subserosa of the ascending colon was noticed and a tumor measuring approximately 3 x 1.2 x 1 cm was located under the hole. A female worm, Trichuris trichiura,

The efficacy of diuredosan was determined in dogs experimentally infected with Ancylostoma caninum and Trichuris vulpis. Diuredosan at dosages of 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg was 99% effective against A caninum. Efficacies against T vulpis were 88, 85, and 94% at dosages of 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg, respectively.
