BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Ocular tuberculosis remains a diagnostic challenge since its clinical presentation is so variable. We describe the clinical characteristics of patients presenting with sclerokeratouveitis secondary to presumed Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.
METHOD: Retrospective analysis of 14 patients presenting with sclerokeratouveitis to Tygerberg Hospital. All patients underwent: (1) detailed ophthalmological evaluation, (2) tuberculin skin test (TST), (3) chest X-ray to assess for systemic disease, and (4) laboratory investigations to exclude other causes of ocular inflammat

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis may be a lethal disease. Its ocular manifestations are commonly associated with severe difficulties in diagnosis and therapy; furthermore, it may cause blindness. DNA amplification methods may allow early detection of small amounts of Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA to afford the possibility of prompt diagnosis. We evaluated a nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) assay for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA in aqueous and vitreous.
METHODS: In a case-control study, 22 cases of diagnosed TB uveitis (three HIV-infected patients) and 38 controls (18 HIV-infect

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a severe health burden worldwide. The manifestation of concurrent tuberculous cerebral and ocular involvements associated with TB is uncommon.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 17-year-old girl with concurrent tuberculous cerebral and ocular involvements and visual impairment due to choroidal neovascularization. This study emphasizes the definite diagnosis with the combination of ophthalmological examination, multimodal imaging and routine tuberculosis testing, and the proper management with intravitreal anti-VEGF injection accompanied by systemic anti-tuber

Ocular tuberculosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of panophthalmitis, uveitis, and intraocular neoplasms. We have presented 6 cases illustrating some of the clinical and pathological characteristics of two types of ocular involvement, acute tuberculous panophthalmitis and ciliary body tuberculoma. The former should be entertained when panophthalmitis or uveitis occur in debilitated patients with obvious systemic tuberculosis foci. Ciliary body tuberculoma should be suspected in relatively healthy individuals with a history of tuberculosis and an intraocular mass. The diagn

BACKGROUND: Aside from the direct ocular manifestations of tuberculosis, significant vision loss can occur during treatment with agents that have potential ocular toxicities. Many thoracic specialists and eye care physicians consider these effects rare and readily reversible. With the alarming increase in incidence of tuberculosis in the United States over the past several years a review of anti-tuberculosis medications and their potential side effects is warranted.
METHODS: A patient who developed dramatic, permanent vision loss after a 9-month course of treatment with ethambutol and isoniaz

Background: In Japan, since the introduction of antituberculosis chemotherapy, the typical choroidal tuberculoma has been considered uncommon. A patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), because of the suppression of cell mediated immunity, faces the risk of tuberculous infection.Case: A 30-year-old Malayan man had continuous cough for 6 months. He was diagnosed as having miliary tuberculosis of the lung and spine. Because the serum test of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was positive, he was also diagnosed as having AIDS.Findings: Fundus examination showed a yellow white swol

BACKGROUND: Multiple choroidal granulomas are a rare presentation of tuberculosis. Choroidal granulomas in immunocompetent patients can pose difficulty in diagnosis as in most cases systemic examination may not reveal any evidence of tuberculosis. We report a case of bilateral multiple choroidal granulomas with systemic vasculitis-like features and disseminated tuberculosis in an immunocompetent patient without pulmonary involvement.
FINDINGS: A 26-year-old male Indian patient presented with bilateral blurred vision and systemic illness with vasculitis-like features. Examination revealed bila

BACKGROUND: Uveitis presumed to be secondary to Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a rare but potentially blinding condition. Difficulty in making an accurate diagnosis and the low incidence of TB uveitis (TBU) contribute to the lack of evidence regarding the best management of this condition. This systematic review aims to analyse existing research to provide a summary of the literature regarding the utility of TB therapy for the management of TBU.
METHODS: This systematic review was prospectively registered on PROSPERO (PROSPERO 2021 CRD42021273379). We searched Medline, Embase and Central datab

There have been great changes in the clinical picture and course of ocular tuberculosis in the 90s versus the 70-80s. There has been a upward trend in the incidence of ocular tuberculosis in the population, in children and teenagers in particular. Patients with tuberculous uveitis involving the posterior eye makes up over 70%. A specific eye tissue inflammatory process is mainly exudative and infiltrative with rapid development of the complications masking a tuberculous focus, which hampers treatment and causes a significant decrease in visual functions.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: To present two cases of placoid chorioretinopathy (ocular syphilis and ocular tuberculosis) and underline the importance of differential diagnosis.
METHOD: Two young female patients presented with unilateral loss of vision. Fundus examination showed yellowish placoid lesions in the posterior pole in both cases.
RESULTS: Performing fluorescein angiography and laboratory investigations, ocular syphilis was diagnosed in our first case and intraocular tuberculosis was diagnosed in our second case.
CONCLUSION: It is important to determine the etiology of the placoid choriar
