BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major health problem in India. The Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP) is working towards elimination of TB in the country by 2025. As the RNTCP relies on passive case finding, it is crucial for the success of the RNTCP that TB patients have knowledge about their disease. The present study aimed to assess the knowledge of TB among pulmonary TB (PTB) patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire based study using a pretested semi-structured questionnaire among new and previously treated PTB patients at Haldwani Block of Nainital D

SETTING: A tertiary care and research institution in Italy.
BACKGROUND: Small DNA fragments from cells dying throughout the body have been detected in urine (transrenal DNA [Tr-DNA]).
OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that Mycobacterium tuberculosis Tr-DNA could be detected in the urine of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) patients.
DESIGN: We studied 43 patients with culture-confirmed pulmonary TB with no evidence of extra-pulmonary involvement, 10 patients with pulmonary diseases other than TB and 13 healthy controls. DNA was extracted from urine and analysed by semi-nested polymerase chain rea

A case of pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with tuberculous of oral mucosa, mandible and cervical lymph nodes in 53-year-old man is reported. He was firstly treated for right side dental caries. He also received routinely an empiric antibiotic therapy, but discharge of pus continued. Then, pain of oral cavities spread to the right shoulder. The diagnosis of oral mucosa, osteomyelitis of mandible and lymph node tuberculosis was made by the histological examination of biopsy specimens and positive smear test for M. tuberculosis in granulation. The chest X-ray film showed multiple nodular shado

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary cavities (PC) are known to be more prevalent among multidrug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis (MDR)/extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR) patients than among drug-sensitive tuberculosis (DS) patients. This study aims to clarify how the interaction between Mycobacterium tuberculosis aggressiveness and tuberculosis history causes the PC prevalence and pattern differences between DS patients and MDR/XDR patients.
METHODS: Eastern European patient data were from the NIAID TB (National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases Tuberculosis) Portals Program registered

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is a lung-specific disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis(MTB) infection. Its clinical symptoms and imaging features are non-specific, often leading to misdiagnosis. Therefore, rapid, accurate and low-cost diagnostic methods are crucial for distinguishing PTB from other pulmonary conditions. The interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) release assays is an immunological diagnostic tool with proven value in detecting tuberculosis (TB) infection; however, its specificity in assisting the diagnosis of active TB remains limited. The combined IFN-γ and interleukin-2 (

Despite recent improvements in microbial detection, smear-negative TB remains a diagnostic challenge. In this study, we investigated the potential discriminatory role of polychromatic flow cytometry of M. tuberculosis antigen-specific T cells to discriminate smear-negative TB from health controls with or without latent TB infection, and non-TB respiratory illnesses in an endemic setting. A cross-sectional study was conducted on HIV negative, newly diagnosed smear-positive PTB (n = 34), smear-negative/GeneXpert negative PTB (n = 29) patients, non-TB patients with respiratory illness (n = 33) an

OBJECTIVE: Recent guidelines recommend the use by healthcare personnel of a fit-tested N95 particulate respirator or higher-grade respiratory precaution in a patient undergoing bronchoscopy when pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is suspected. However, PTB may be unexpectedly diagnosed in this setting and therefore not evaluated, resulting in the unexpected exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) of healthcare workers in the bronchoscopy suite. Here, we examined the incidence of unexpected exposure to MTB during flexible bronchoscopy and determined the exposure-related factors.
METHODS: Betwee
