Objective. In this paper, we present a detailedin vivocharacterization of the optical and hemodynamic properties of the human sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM), obtained through ultrasound-guided near-infrared time-domain and diffuse correlation spectroscopies.Approach.A total of sixty-five subjects (forty-nine females, sixteen males) among healthy volunteers and thyroid nodule patients have been recruited for the study. Their SCM hemodynamic (oxy-, deoxy- and total hemoglobin concentrations, blood flow, blood oxygen saturation and metabolic rate of oxygen extraction) and optical properties (wav

Background. The pulse characteristics of arterial circulation might affect radial artery catheterization's success rate. Therefore, we hypothesized that the success rate of radial artery catheterization would be lower in the left-sided severe stenotic valvular lesion group than severe regurgitant valvular lesion group. Methods. This prospective study was conducted among patients with left-sided cardiac valvular lesions undergoing cardiac and non-cardiac surgery. The patients with left-sided severe valvular stenosis and left-sided severe valvular regurgitation were included in the study. Radial

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the application value of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in ultrasound-guided lauromacrogol injections in patients with cesarean scar pregnancies (CSP).
METHODS: A total of 31 patients diagnosed with CSP, who underwent an ultrasound-guided lauromacrogol injection + curettage in our hospital between February 2019 and December 2020 and had a complete recovery confirmed by a postoperative ultrasound review and serum β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) assay, were enrolled as the study subjects. According to the volume of intraoperative blood loss and the dur

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy may result in complications, including fibrosis, which can result in pain and difficulty with movement - especially in the neck.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old man with right-sided vague neck pain unresponsive to conservative management had a computed tomography scan that showed a vagal paraganglioma in the carotid sheath surrounding the right carotid arteries and internal jugular vein. Following radiation therapy, he noticed a new pain in his right jaw and neck worse with certain movements of the neck. Nonsurgical conservative measures including physical thera

Symptomatic compression of the left common iliac vein between the right common iliac artery and spinal vertebrae is referred to as May-Thurner Syndrome (MTS). Atypical cases of MTS including compression of the left external iliac vein, right iliac vein or the inferior vena cava can also coexist and cause double vein compression. Current literature suggests that endovascular treatment including thrombolysis, thrombectomy, venoplasty and stent placement to correct the mechanical obstruction together with anticoagulation therapy is safe and a reasonable management for patients with MTS. BACKGROUND: Recently, the first report of lung ultrasound (LUS) guided recruitment during open lung ventilation in neonates has been published. LUS guided recruitment can change the approach to open lung ventilation, which is currently performed without any measure of lung function/lung expansion in the neonatal population.
METHODS: We included all the newborn infants that underwent a LUS-guided recruitment maneuver during mechanical ventilation as a rescue attempt for an extremely severe respiratory condition with oxygen saturation/fraction of inspired oxygen (SpO2/FIO2) ratio below 130 or t

An 80-year-old woman presented with acute abdominal pain and distention. A diagnosis of acute chylous peritonitis was made via contrast-enhanced computed tomography and abdominal paracentesis. She underwent ultrasound-guided intranodal lymphangiography with Lipiodol® (IL with Lipiodol), and her persistent abdominal pain was significantly reduced within a day. Moreover, her ascitic fluid showed marked improvement and paracentesis was no longer needed. Based on the findings of the study, IL with Lipiodol could be a promising minimally invasive approach in the treatment of acute chylous peritonit

OBJECTIVES: Our study aimed to explore the clinical therapeutic effects of ultrasound-guided five-point injection of botulinum toxin type A for patients with trapezius hypertrophy.
METHODS: Twenty female patients diagnosed with trapezius hypertrophy were enrolled in this study. The thicknesses of the trapezius muscle were measured by using the ultrasound scanner to locate the thickest point of trapezius, followed by labelling the other four points around the first point. Botulinum toxin type A was injected bilaterally (50 IU/side, 5 points/side) in the trapezius muscle of these patients. The

BACKGROUND: The sacroiliac joint is one of the most common sources of low back pain; however, it is difficult to place the needle accurately inside the joint space without image guidance. Improvement of ultrasound technology may lead to a high success rate for intra-articular drug deposition.
OBJECTIVE: Assessment of the success rate of ultrasound-guided intra-articular sacroiliac joint injection.
DESIGN: Prospective observational study.
METHODOLOGY: Ultrasound-guided injections were performed on 34 patients suffering from sacroiliitis. After injection of the drug solution and withdrawal of

The successful collaboration among Ultraschall in der Medizin/ European Journal of Ultrasound (UiM/EJU), DEGUM, ÖGUM and SGUM as well as Thieme Verlag was confirmed in the respective general meetings in Davos recently, and it was agreed that such cooperation should continue in coming years. Last year, in discussions with the previous DEGUM board of directors the issue of orientation of the content of UiM/EJU, among other things, was an essential topic. Briefly stated, the constructive criticism was: too much science, too little continuing education. It is worthwhile and necessary to address th

Transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization (THD) is an effective treatment for hemorrhoidal disease. The ligation of hemorrhoidal arteries (called "dearterialization") can provide a significant reduction of the arterial overflow to the hemorrhoidal piles. Plication of the redundant rectal mucosa/submucosa (called "mucopexy") can provide a repositioning of prolapsing tissue to the anatomical site. In this paper, the surgical technique and perioperative patient management are illustrated. Following adequate clinical assessment, patients undergo THD under general or spinal anesthesia, in either the

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether colour duplex imaging alone could safely and effectively be used to diagnose lower limb arterial lesions and guide subsequent percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA).
METHODS: Patients with discrete lower limb arterial lesions, preferably stenoses, which could be visualized clearly by colour duplex imaging were selected for duplex-guided PTA. Duplex-guided PTA was performed in an operating theatre using conventional balloon catheters.
RESULTS: Duplex imaging was used to diagnose and guide PTA of 55 arterial lesions in 50 le

Ultrasonography for the digestive diseases are consisted of abdominal ultrasonography (US), endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and color Doppler endoscopic ultrasonography (CDEUS). These play a supplementary role in comparison with the roentgenography and endoscopy. The information of the ultrasonography is different from these examinations. By US the collateral shunts of esophago-gastric varices are observed. EUS is useful for diagnosis of the properties of esophago-gastric varices and judgement of effects of treatment for these varices, gastric ulcer and vessels in ulcer base and hemorrhagic b

Local glucocorticoid injections are used in the treatment of isolated sacroiliitis in patients with spondyloarthritis. Sacroiliac joint injections can be performed intraarticularly or periarticularly. Since the accuracy of blind injections is low, fluoroscopy, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, or ultrasonography guidance are used to increase the accuracy of sacroiliac joint injections. Currently, imaging fusion software is successfully used in sacroiliac joint interventions with three-dimensional anatomic information added to ultrasonography. Herein, we present two cases of sacr
