BACKGROUND: Indwelling catheterization following radical prostatectomy is used to aid healing and urinary drainage. While early removal is well investigated, prolonged catheterization has only been investigated in terms of urinary incontinence. Other complications such as anastomotic strictures are unexplored so far. This study aims to analyze the sequelae of catheterization lasting more than 14 days after robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP).
METHODS: A prospective database of 3087 patients undergoing RARP was analyzed, focusing on 180 patients with catheterization exceeding 14 days

To determine whether the use of urinary catheters in elderly patients in nursing homes has an independent effect on morbidity and mortality, the authors conducted a 1-year prospective study among 1,540 patients in a stratified random sample of nursing homes. Patient mortality was assessed at 1 year in relation to the presence or absence of a catheter at entry to the study, acquisition of a catheter, and the proportion of nursing home days spent catheterized during the study year. The independent association of catheter use with mortality was assessed by logistic regression analysis adjusted fo

Purple urine bag syndrome is characterized by the urinary drainage bag turning purple in patients on prolonged urinary catheterization, especially those in the bedridden state. It is associated with bacterial urinary tract infections caused by indigo-producing and indirubin-producing bacteria, usually affects women, and is associated with alkaline urine, constipation, and a high bacterial load in the urine. Almost all patients with purple urine bag syndrome are catheterized due to significant disability, and the urinary pH is 7.0 or more. In general, intensive treatment with antibiotics is not…

BACKGROUND: Urinary dysfunction may occur after mesorectal excision and pelvic autonomic nerve preservation (PANP) in patients with rectal carcinoma. The aim of this prospective study was to identify factors predictive of long-term urinary catheterization.
METHODS: Two hundred and ten patients without significant urological problems underwent resection of rectal cancer with mesorectal excision. The number of patients with complete, partial or no identification of the nerves was documented and correlated with possible predictive factors for postoperative major urinary dysfunction.
RESULTS: Ei…

OBJECTIVES: To review the literature showing that understanding how Foley catheters become encrusted and blocked by crystalline bacterial biofilms has led to strategies for the control of this complication in the care of patients undergoing long-term indwelling bladder catheterization.
METHODS: A comprehensive PubMed search of the literature published between 1980 and December 2009 was made for relevant articles using the Medical Subject Heading terms 'biofilms', 'urinary catheterization', 'catheter-associated urinary tract infection' and 'urolithiasis'. Papers on catheter-associated urinary …

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine the incidence of postoperative urinary retention (POUR) in men after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and to identify preventable risk factors for the development of this complication.
METHODS: All male patients who underwent CEA from 2014 to June 2018 were identified. Exclusions included CEA with concomitant cardiac surgery, baseline dialysis, and indwelling or straight catheterization. POUR was the primary end point, defined as inability to void requiring catheterization within 24 hours postoperatively or after removal of a preoperatively place

The Urinary Tract Infection Consensus Conference brought together researchers, clinicians, and consumers to arrive at consensus on the best practices for preventing and treating urinary tract infections in people with spinal cord injuries; the risk factor and diagnostic studies that should be done; indications for antibiotic use; appropriate follow-up management; and needed future research. Urinary tract infection (UTI) was defined as bacteriuria (102 bacteria/ml of urine) with tissue invasion and resultant tissue response with signs and/or symptoms. Asymptomatic bacteriuria represents coloniz

BACKGROUND: In this study, we attempt to identify the most appropriate catheter (silicone vs. latex) for short-term urinary catheterization. We compared the post-operative clinico-pathological complications between latex and silicone for short term catheterization in rabbits with hypospadias.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty rabbits were used in our study to compare complications of catheterization. They were divided in two groups. Hypospadias like defect was created by a 1 cm long excision of the ventral urethra. For urethroplasty, we used tubularized incised plate technique. Latex and silicon c…

Urinary catheterization is a common procedure that is performed on 12% of hospital patients (Crow et al, 1996) and 4% of community patients (Getliffe, 1990). When considering catheterization as a method of care, many decisions need to be made in order to select the optimum equipment and provide effective catheter care. This includes selecting the type of catheterization that needs to be performed, i.e. intermittent or indwelling, and choosing the right catheter material, size and balloon infill volume. The type and design features of the urinary drainage and suspensory system have a direct eff…

Culture and sensitivity data were collected on over 500 isolates from indwelling urinary catheters in 23 Nebraska long-term care facilities. Four percent of all nursing home patients had indwelling urinary catheters. The prevalence of bacteriuria in catheterized patients was 79%., and the most frequent isolates were E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, and Enterococcus species. Thirteen percent of catheterized patients were receiving systemic antibiotics, and 85% had at least one urinary bacterial isolate resistant to the antibiotic being administered. Antibiotic resistance correlated positively with a

AIM: This paper reports an evaluation of the differences among rates of unnecessary catheterization, urinary retention and urinary tract infection before and after implementing a bladder ultrasound programme to assess urine volume.
BACKGROUND: Bladder ultrasound is a non-invasive alternative to urethral catheterization for the determination of bladder urine volume. Much of the literature available on bladder ultrasound technology addresses the accuracy of the equipment, with little research on the clinical outcomes or benefits of the intervention.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental design was ado

PURPOSE: Urinary tract infections commonly occur in patients with spina bifida and pose a risk of renal scarring. Routine antibiotic prophylaxis has been utilized in newborns with spina bifida to prevent urinary tract infections. We hypothesized that prophylaxis can safely be withheld in newborns with spina bifida until clinical assessment allows for risk stratification.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Newborns with myelomeningocele at 9 institutions were prospectively enrolled in the UMPIRE study and managed by a standardized protocol with a strict definition of urinary tract infection. Patient data
