A study of morphine-induced urinary retention in anesthetized rats capable of micturition.

The nature of morphine-induced urinary retention was studied in anesthetized rats in which the bladder contraction accompanying micturition could be observed. Morphine (0.1 mg/kg, i.v.) prolonged the micturition interval and increased the level of micturition threshold. Morphine (1 mg/kg, i.v.) completely inhibited bladder contraction and bladder pressure was elevated until solution leaked from the penis, but the bladder pressure after inhibition by morphine (1 and 5 mg/kg, i.v.) did not significantly rise over the peak pressure level during micturition before injection of morphine. Sonographic evaluation of children with urinary retention caused by an extragonadal pelvic mass.

Urinary retention in children is rarely caused by an extrinsic compression of an extragonadal pelvic mass. The sonographic appearance of these masses are divided into 3 categories: 1) solid, 2) fluid-filled, and 3) mixed. Familiarity with the sonographic spectrum of these lesions can limit the differential diagnosis, will suggest specific follow-up procedures needed for an accurate diagnosis and will eliminate the need for unnecessary invasive workups.

Treatment of excessive urinary frequency and urgency by desensitization and progressive retention training.

A 20-yr-old male presenting a 2-yr history of excessive urinary urgency and frequency was treated with a three-phase behavioral intervention. Hydronephrotic pelvic kidney mimicking urinary retention in an 18-year-old male.

We present a case of a hydronephrotic pelvic kidney in an 18-year-old male reporting about inability to void. Ultrasound showed a hypoechogenic mass mimicking a full urinary bladder. Anticipating urinary retention, a foley was inserted but no urin could be aspirated. Imaging showed a hydronephrotic pelvic kidney with no relevant function obstructing the urinary bladder and the contralateral ureter.
