Design and Usability Assessment of a Multi-Device SOA-Based Telecare Framework for the Elderly.

Telemonitoring is a branch of telehealth that aims at remotely monitoring vital signs, which is important for chronically ill patients and the elderly living alone. The available standalone devices and applications for the self-monitoring of health parameters largely suffer from interoperability problems; meanwhile, telemonitoring medical devices are expensive, self-contained, and are not integrated into user-friendly technological platforms for the end user. This paper presents the technical aspects and usability assessment of the telemonitoring features of the HEREiAM platform, which support

Empirical Insights of Individual Website Adjustments for People with Dyslexia.

The existing body of knowledge reveals that customisable websites may lead to an increase in accessibility and usability for people with disabilities. In this way, the main goal of this research was to investigate how people with dyslexia respond to a customised version of a website in terms of its effectiveness, efficiency, satisfaction and suitability when compared to the default version of the website. The customisation of the investigated website was enabled with the aid of integrated assistive technology that offers people with dyslexia the opportunity to adjust a website themselves in ac

Effects of Trait Hostility, Mapping Interface, and Character Identification on Aggressive Thoughts and Overall Game Experience After Playing a Violent Video Game.

This study investigated the effects of trait-level hostility, interface types, and character identification on aggressive thoughts and overall game experience after playing a violent video game. Results showed that the mapping interface made participants with high trait-level hostility more readily accessible to aggressive contracts, yet it did not have any significant impact for participants with low trait-level hostility. Participants with low trait-level hostility reported more positive game experience in the mapping interface condition, while participants with high trait-level hostility in

Simulating sharp geometric features in six degrees-of-freedom haptic rendering.

It is a challenging problem to achieve six degree-of-freedom (DoF) haptic simulation of subtle force feelings caused by contacts at sharp geometric features in multi-region contact scenarios. We design a novel sphere-tree model for objects with sharp features and use a configuration-based optimization method to compute feedback force and torque. Given a triangle mesh of an object, a sphere-tree model is created based on dihedral angles between pairs of adjacent triangles. The model consists of a hierarchical sphere-tree for global shape and a linked-list of spheres for local areas with sharp f

Emergence of virtual reality as a tool for upper limb rehabilitation: incorporation of motor control and motor learning principles.

The primary focus of rehabilitation for individuals with loss of upper limb movement as a result of acquired brain injury is the relearning of specific motor skills and daily tasks. This relearning is essential because the loss of upper limb movement often results in a reduced quality of life. Although rehabilitation strives to take advantage of neuroplastic processes during recovery, results of traditional approaches to upper limb rehabilitation have not entirely met this goal. In contrast, enriched training tasks, simulated with a wide range of low- to high-end virtual reality-based simulati

Humans perceive object motion in world coordinates during obstacle avoidance.

A fundamental question about locomotion in the presence of moving objects is whether movements are guided based upon perceived object motion in an observer-centered or world-centered reference frame. The former captures object motion relative to the moving observer and depends on both observer and object motion. The latter captures object motion relative to the stationary environment and is independent of observer motion. Subjects walked through a virtual environment (VE) viewed through a head-mounted display and indicated whether they would pass in front of or behind a moving obstacle that wa

Lever-actuated resonance assistance (LARA): a wheelchair-based method for upper extremity therapy and overground ambulation for people with severe arm impairment.

People with severe arm impairment have limited technologies available for retraining their arms, and, if they also have difficulty walking, they often cannot effectively use a manual wheelchair because they cannot grasp and push the pushrim. We are using Lever-Actuated Resonance Assistance (LARA) to solve these problems. A LARA-based device can attach to a manual wheelchair and allow it to be used by people with severe arm weakness in a stationary exercise mode, or for self-powered overground ambulation. LARA uses a lever drive and arm support to appropriately position the arm and to reduce th

Designing an emergency medical information system for the early stages of disasters in developing countries: the human interface advantage, simplicity and efficiency.

The means of designing an effective user interface software package varies from one application to another. Almost the entire ICT infrastructure was damaged following the impact of the tsunami tidal wave. Under such circumstances, transporting critically ill patients is a must and becomes the first priority. Many considerations are needed when designing a specific user interface for emergency situations in developing countries. In this study we proposed how to design the user interface in order to support emergency medical care in the early stages of disasters. The user interface was classifie

Use of an EMG-driven biomechanical model to study virtual injuries.

INTRODUCTION: How the CNS activates muscles to produce coordinated movement is a matter of debate and great interest. We are attempting to answer this question, in part, by investigating how individual muscles and groups of muscles are activated under different physiologic and environmental conditions. We have developed an EMG-driven virtual arm to assist in this endeavor. PURPOSE: To demonstrate how the virtual arm can be used to simulate a neuromuscular injury and to examine whether a virtual injury can evoke a change in muscle activation patterns. METHODS: The virtual arm is a three-dimen

Virtual cardiac symposia: Worldwide, Internet-based, educational forums for cardiologists.

In this study, we detail our recent experience with 2 successful Internet-based virtual cardiac symposia that focused on the Brugada syndrome and the long QT syndrome. The responses from cardiologists around the world exceeded our expectations, and clearly, this approach answered an unmet need and has major educational potential. Although we initiated the Virtual Cardiac Symposia with the idea of assisting cardiologists caring for patients with relatively infrequent cardiac conditions, we believe that this Internet-based educational approach will have similar applicability and value for cardio

Mark-up based analysis of narrative guidelines with the Stepper tool.

The Stepper tool was developed to assist a knowledge engineer in developing a computable version of narrative guidelines. The system is document-centric: it formalises the initial text in multiple user-definable steps corresponding to interactive XML transformations. In this paper, we report on experience obtained by applying the tool on a narrative guideline document addressing unstable angina pectoris. Possible role of the tool and associated methodology in developing a guideline-based application is also discussed.

Experiential cognitive therapy in the treatment of panic disorders with agoraphobia: a controlled study.

The use of a multicomponent cognitive-behavioral treatment strategy for panic disorder with agoraphobia is actually one of the preferred therapeutic approaches for this disturbance. This method involves a mixture of cognitive and behavioral techniques that are intended to help patients identify and modify their dysfunctional anxiety-related thoughts, beliefs and behavior. The paper presents a new treatment protocol for Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia, named Experiential-Cognitive Therapy (ECT) that integrates the use of virtual reality (VR) in a multicomponent cognitive-behavioral treatment str

Mixed Reality as an Environment for Reaction Speed Assessment in Physically Active Young Adults: Measurement Reliability and Participant Experience Compared with Immersive Virtual Reality.

Mixed reality (MR) delivered through video see-through headsets could enable reaction-speed assessment while preserving awareness of the physical environment, but its measurement properties remain unclear. This study assessed the reliability of reaction-speed measurements in MR and compared performance and user experience with immersive virtual reality (VR). Forty university students (20 women; age 22.9 ± 2.3 years) completed three 1 min Reaction-Micro Wall trials in each environment in counterbalanced order using Meta Quest 3 and Rezzil Player. Quantification of cognitive load and usability in 3 percutaneous posterior spine surgical workflows using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS), Surgical Task Load Index (SURG-TLX) and modified System Usability Survey.

Increase complexity in surgical workflows, with the introduction of digital interfaces and navigation, has the potential risk of introducing cognitive burden to the user. Understanding the effect of different surgical workflows on the user's mental load, as a way of supporting decision-making and design iterations for medical device development, is limited. The present study aimed to quantify differences in cognitive load during a demanding task in spine surgery (percutaneous pedicle screw placement) performed with three workflows with increasing complexity, from limited visual aid to the pres

Virtual Reality Experience as Reflected in EEG Microstates.

The development of virtual reality technology has provided psychological research with powerful tools by presenting stimuli and constructing scenarios, and the combination of VR and neuroimaging techniques begins to provide particularly interesting insights into the experience of virtual events and scenarios, similar to real life. Here we combined VR with EEG technology, so to record and analyze EEG microstates evoked by VR experiences. Our findings suggest that microstates A, B, C, and D reflect cognitive activities during VR experience, while microstate E specifically corresponds to immersio
