Infections of uvula have been described in association with group A streptococcal pharyngitis (Rapkin, JAMI, 43, 1980, 1843), or Haemolytic influenzae type b epiglottitis. Medicine (Gorjinkel HJ, 58, 1979, 80) however, to our knowledge, only two cases of isolated uvulitis are reported in world literature. We report five cases of isolated uvulitis in adults.

A 57 year old man developed bilateral hypoglossal nerve palsies 6 years after radiotherapy for carcinoma of the uvula. Follow-up over 2 years has demonstrated no evidence of tumour recurrence and no sign of neurological improvement. Reactive fibrosis and vascular insufficiency secondary to radiation and may have lead to hypoglossal nerve compression and infarction.

A family with Van der Woude syndrome is described. The proband, whose mother and brother had facial clefting, showed inconspicuous abnormalities of the lower lip and a bifid uvula. Lesser expressions of Van der Woude syndrome are common and should be actively looked for in counseling families about cleft lip or cleft lip and palate.

The use of cannabis in our society is a common problem and the subject of much medical and political debate. We present a case in which a 17-year-old male regular cannabis user developed a large swollen uvula (uvulitis) and partial upper airway obstruction after smoking cannabis. Symptoms resolved with the administration of corticosteroids and antihistamines.

We describe a patient with bilateral extreme microphthalmia with bilateral congenital glaucoma, bilateral medial oblique facial cleft ending in lid colobomas, bilateral stenosis of the choanae, bifid uvula, frontal encephalocele, and premature craniosynostosis. The cause is unknown, but the phenotype resembles the Fryns anophthalmia-plus syndrome, which may be a recessive trait, although intrauterine environmental factors cannot be excluded.

Holoprosencephaly refers to a spectrum of craniofacial malformations including cyclopia, ethmocephaly, cebocephaly, and premaxillary agenesis. Etiologic heterogeneity is well documented. Chromosomal, genetic, and teratogenic factors have been implicated. Recognition of holoprosencephaly as a developmental field defect stresses the importance of close scrutiny of relatives for mild forms such as single median incisor, hypotelorism, bifid uvula, or pituitary deficiency.

Isolated angioedema of the uvula, or Quincke's disease, is a rare condition that can cause respiratory compromise. Although typically self-limiting, episodes of angioedema may require prompt therapy to prevent obstruction of the proximal airway.
