UNLABELLED: The aim of the present investigation is to determine what is the place of cytological screening of the uterine cervix in sexually active teenagers.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was based on 83 girls aged between 14 and 19 (mean age 18.13 years) without childbirth in history, who visited our clinic with non-specific gynecological complaints. All patients were submitted to brush cytology applying the classical method and classifying the smears according to the Bethesda system (1991).
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: A high adequacy of the cytologic smears was found, reaching up to 98.8%

The use of the cytobrush and other endocervical sampling instruments has resulted in an increasing rate of detection and attention to glandular abnormalities of the cervix. BACKGROUND: Carcinoma metastatic to the uterus from extragenital sites is rare. Such metastatic disease is typically diagnosed at autopsy or in patients with known primary malignancies. Swabs from 112 removed intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCD), endocervical swabs from these women and from 65 women with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) were studied for actinomyces, using direct fluorescent antibody test and culture. Endocervical swabs from 50 control subjects were also studied. Actinomyces species could be detected in 23 (20.5 percent) of IUCD wearers and 8 (12.3 percent) of patients with PID. Morphometric parameters were measured and specific light optic features of epitheliocyte nuclei examined in the cytologic preparations from 67 patients with various abnormalities of the cervix uteri multi-layer squamous epithelium by a present-day long-distance microimage analyzer. The most informative biometric parameters were detected, role of DNA cytophotometry defined, and algorithm of differential diagnosis between benign conditions, dysplasia, and carcinoma developed.

Of 259 women using intrauterine contraceptive devices 80 (31%) had visible actinomyces-like filaments in their cervical smears. Actinomycetes were cultured from a total of 31 women. Suspicious cultures were identified with the aid of a commercially available kit in conjunction with a computer data base. Culture was found to be less sensitive than microscopical examination of cervical smears in detecting actinomycetes in these women.

The UCLA monolayer procedure is used to produce a preparation of cervical epithelial cells for automated cytology. We investigated the nylon mesh filtration step of the procedure to determine if it altered the proportion of abnormal epithelial cells in the specimen.
