Relationship between cognitive impairments and psychopathological symptoms in female schizophrenia subsequent to 8 weeks treatment with antipsychotic drugs.

BACKGROUND: Changes in cognitive impairments and their relationship with psychopathological symptoms during treatment in schizophrenia remai … symptoms and overall cognitive functioning improved significantly (p < 0.05), with the exception of verbal learning and social cognition (p > 0.05). Most cognitive dimensions were negatively correlated with positive symptoms, negative symptoms, and general psychopathological symptoms (p < 0.05, Bonferroni correction), while verbal learning and social cognition we …

Recent cocaine use and memory impairment in HIV.

Both Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and cocaine use have been associated with impairment in neuropsychological functioning. The high comorbidity between HIV and cocaine use highlights the importance of ascertaining whether there is a compounding effect of cocaine use in individuals with HIV. Among neuropsychological domains impacted by HIV, verbal memory deficits have received substantial attention partly because they have been associated with declines in functional status in HIV positive individuals. We collected California Verbal Learning Test-II data from HIV participants who met lifeti…

Underlying mechanisms of verbal memory deficits in obsessive-compulsive disorder and major depression--the role of cognitive self-consciousness.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have demonstrated that some individuals suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are impaired in verbal memory performance. This study was designed to investigate the role of cognitive self-consciousness (CSC) as a putative underlying mechanism of these cognitive deficits. METHODS: Verbal memory performance of 36 participants with OCD, 36 individuals with major depression disorder (MDD) and 36 healthy controls was assessed with the California Verbal Learning Test under three different experimental conditions: (1) single-task condition, (2)…

Conditional-associative learning in eating disorders: a comparison with OCD.

The acquisition of conditional associations using neutral and individually threatening verbal stimuli was assessed in 16 females with anorexia nervosa (AN), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bulimia nervosa and normal controls, respectively. Groups did not differ in terms of age, sex, intelligence, depression, verbal memory and verbal fluency measures. Patients and controls were widely comparable on tests assessing neuropsychological functioning. In the conditional-associative learning (CAL)-task only anorectic and OCD-patients displayed an impaired performance with neutral material but not

A test of verbal learning elicited the greatest number of recurrent perseverations. Overall test performance of the CHI group suggested that memory dysfunction and impaired attention were most likely responsible for perseverative errors. CT scan analyses showed that the thre …

Cognitive Index Differences on the WISC-IV Among Children with Specific Learning Disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and a Clinically Evaluated Comparison Group: A Cross-Sectional Evaluation.

Children with specific learning disorder (SLD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may show cognitive differences. We compared WISC-IV scores in 130 children aged 7-13 years (32 SLD, 56 ADHD, 42 comparison) and examined associations with parental education. Groups differed in Verbal Comprehension, Working Memory, Processing Speed, and Full Scale IQ, but not Perceptual Reasoning. The SLD group scored lowest, the ADHD group showed an intermediate pattern, and the comparison group scored highest. Parental education was positively associated with all outcomes, whereas diagnostic-gr

Spatial Cognition in Children With Physical Disability; What Is the Impact of Restricted Independent Exploration?

Given the developmental inter-relationship between motor ability and spatial skills, we investigated the impact of physical disability (PD) on spatial cognition. Fifty-three children with special educational needs including PD were divided into those who were wheelchair users (n = 34) and those with independent locomotion ability (n = 19). This division additionally enabled us to determine the impact of limited independent physical exploration (i.e., required wheelchair use) on spatial competence. We compared the spatial performance of children in these two PD groups to that of typically devel

Hormonal influences in developmental learning disabilities.

Developmental language and learning disabilities in children can take many different forms and can result from a variety of causes. Research to date has focused primarily on specific disabilities in learning, which are characterized by a significant delay or disorder in one aspect of learning against a background of otherwise normal development. Learning disabilities affecting language and/or reading acquisition (developmental dysphasia and dyslexia) have been studied most thoroughly. Verbal learning disabilities occur more frequently in boys than in girls, and there is a higher than expected …

Temporal processing in poor adult readers.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between two different temporal processing tasks and word identification performance in skilled, dyslexic and poor adult readers. In Experiment 1 spatial and temporal sequencing tasks were conducted. It was found that adult dyslexics were significantly less accurate than skilled readers across all conditions in the temporal sequencing task, and when higher numbers of stimuli were presented in the spatial task. Experiment 2 replicated Experiment 1 in the temporal sequencing task and also found that poor readers had significantly higher m

Attention and memory in children with brain tumors.

The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test was utilized to examine attention, learning, and memory abilities in 42 children with cerebellar (N = 18) and third ventricle tumors (N = 24). Children with cerebellar tumors exhibited significant auditory attentional impairments and displayed adequate encoding and retrieval across subsequent learning and memory trials. In contrast, children with third ventricle tumors exhibited average auditory attentional abilities, but they displayed mild encoding deficits across trials 2-5. Furthermore, the third ventricle group's compromised performance on the delayed…

Working memory in children with developmental disorders.

The aim of the present study was to directly compare working memory skills across students with different developmental disorders to investigate whether the uniqueness of their diagnosis would impact memory skills. The authors report findings confirming differential memory profiles on the basis of the following developmental disorders: Specific Language Impairment, Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and Asperger syndrome (AS). Specifically, language impairments were associated with selective deficits in verbal short-term and working memory, whe

Phonemes, rhymes, and intelligence as predictors of children's responsiveness to remedial reading instruction: evidence from a longitudinal intervention study.

We present an analysis of data from a longitudinal intervention study with 7-year-old poor readers (Hatcher, Hulme, & Ellis, 1994). A battery of cognitive and phonological tasks administered before the intervention began revealed five separate factors: Phoneme Manipulation, Rhyme, Verbal Ability, Nonverbal Ability and Phonological Memory. We assessed the extent to which these factors were predictive of children's responsiveness to the teaching interventions they received. For reading accuracy, Verbal Ability, Nonverbal Ability, Phonological Memory, and Rhyme made no significant contribution to

Predicting literacy intervention responsiveness using semi-supervised machine learning.

BACKGROUND: There is pervasive non-responsiveness to systematic phonics interventions which have furthermore tended to focus on near-transfer outcomes related to phonology. There is a need to predict intervention responsiveness related to far transfer outcomes such as literacy-relevant word reading and spelling. Furthermore, there is potential for the use of advanced machine learning to maximize predictive power. AIMS: This study aims to longitudinally predict systematic phonics intervention using machine learning models. METHOD: The sample included children with special educational needs (M

Outcome survey of auditory-verbal graduates: study of clinical efficacy.

Audiologists must be knowledgeable about the efficacy of aural habilitation practices because we are often the first professionals to inform parents about their child's hearing impairment. The purpose of this investigation was to document the status of graduates of one aural habilitation option; auditory-verbal. A consumer survey was completed by graduates from auditory-verbal programs in the United States and Canada. Graduates were queried regarding degree and etiology of hearing loss, age of onset, amplification, and educational and employment history, among other topics. Results indicated t
