Vascular responses to acute vibration in the fingers of normal subjects.

The aim of this experimental study was to investigate the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the acute effects of unilateral vibration on the digital circulation of healthy men. In the fingers of both hands of eight male subjects (age 23-47 years) who had never worked with vibrating tools, finger blood flow (FBF) and finger skin temperature (FST) in thermoneutral conditions, and the percentage change of finger systolic pressure (FSP %) after local cooling from 30 to 10 degrees C were measured. The right hand was exposed for 30 min to sinusoidal vibration with a frequency of 125 Hz and a…

Vibration aftereffects on vasoconstrictor response to cold in the normal finger.

The acute effects of unilateral 30 min exposure to hand-arm vibration on the vasoconstrictor response to cold in a finger from both hands were investigated in 12 healthy men (age 18-38 years) who had never worked with vibrating tools. One hand was exposed to accelerations of 4.0 and 16.0 m.s-2 on 2 different days. The vasoconstrictor response to cold (R%) was expressed as the relative decrease in finger systolic blood pressure, measured using cuff and strain gauge techniques, when the finger was cooled from 30 to 10 degrees C. The R% of both third fingers were measured simultaneously before un…

Transfer of tennis racket vibrations onto the human forearm.

One of several factors suspected in the development of lateral epicondylitis, often referred to as tennis elbow, is the impact-induced vibration of the racket-and-arm system at ball contact. Using two miniature accelerometers at the wrist and the elbow of 24 tennis players, the effects of 23 different tennis racket constructions were evaluated in a simulated backhand stroke situation. The influences of body weight, skill level, and tennis racket construction onto the magnitude of vibrations at wrist and elbow were investigated. Amplitudes, integrals, and fourier components were used to charact…

[Effects of vibration and noise on the reproductive function in experimental animals].

Experimental animal studies of the reproduction function were performed under prolonged vibration and noise conditions. For 4 months and 5 days male white rats were exposed to 4-hour noise and vibration effect in a noise-protected chamber. The correlated vibration velocity index was 5.07.10(-2) m/s. The permanent wide range noise level reached 92 dBA. It was established that: in a long-term experiment, vibration and noise affected the reproduction function in male white rats; in a combined vibration and noise action, marked changes in the reproduction function were revealed, and in the noise e…

Frequency dependence of the suppressive effects of vibration on atherosclerosis in the rabbit.

Whole-body vibration suppresses the development of atherosclerosis in the rabbit (Oki and Matoba, 1987). The present study was designed to clarify whether the effect of vibration on atherosclerosis depends on the frequency of vibration. Longitudinal vibrations at a frequency of 30 or 60 Hz was applied to 12 New Zealand white rabbits for 12 weeks. The gradual decrease in body weight and blood hematocrit in the vibration groups with time were parallel to the changes in the controls. The rate of increase in serum lipid concentrations induced by a cholesterol-rich diet was significantly suppressed…

[The histopathological substrate of the empty fingers phenomenon in vibration disease].

Vibration syndrome is comprised of a series of skeletal, vascular and nervous alterations in the upper limbs and in particular the hands. These alterations have been describe extensively, but the result of the present study that is the "empty digit" sign, has never been documented. This observation is related to trophic disturbance of the dermis and epidermis, sustained by organic alterations of the vascular, muscular, connective and nervous structure of the skin itself, as has been shown in the present study from histological preparations obtained by biopsy of the skin of the IV digit of the …

[The value of thermographic tests in the diagnosis of the vascular vibration syndrome].

With the aim of testing the usefulness of static thermography for the diagnosis of the vibration syndrome with the AGA-680 Medical apparatus, 111 patients treated in the clinic for suspected vibration syndrome and 25 patients with the idiopathic Raynaud's syndrome have been examined. The vibration syndrome was found in 70 patients, basing on complex multispecialist examinations with no thermovisual evaluation. Ischaemic symptoms were found thermographically in 63 subjects (56%), the rates being the same for the vibration syndrome and non-diagnosed occupational disease groups. The highest sensi…

[Neurocyte reaction of the kinesthetic analyzer of rats to the action of vibration].

By neurohistological, morphometric and electron-microscopic methods the effect of vibration of 80 Hz applied at an acceleration of 8 m/sec2 on the nerve cell and conduction components of the kinesthetic analyzer was investigated. After a single exposure to vibration nerve cells of the sensorimotor cortex showed some changes. Exposure to vibration for as long as a week caused reactive changes in every structure of the kinesthetic analyzer investigated. After 1-month exposure the changes were more disseminated and became destructive, after 2-month exposure the process developed at a slower rate,…

[Effect of pure sound and vibration on the embryonic development of the mouse].

Studies were conducted about the effects of noise and vibration on the ontogenesis of mouse. Application of noise and vibration was carried out in 340 female mice in the phenocritical phase. The parameters of pure sound were 100 dB and 10.000 Hz. The vibration was carried out with the oscillating velocity of 87,1 mm/s and the oscillating acceleration of 3,45 X 10(4) mm/s2. The duration of noise was 10 hours, of vibration 4 and 8 hours. In an other experiment the animals were exposed to the combination of noise (10 h) and vibration (4 h). 581 fetuses were evaluated by subsequent parameters: Fet…

[State of peripheral circulation in the late stages of vibration disease].

The paper is concerned with a description of the results of polyrheovasographical studies in 102 patients with late stages of vibrational disease. The authors distinguished 3 variants of vascular disturbances: hypertonic, hypotonic, dystonic. The cold test detected in most of the patients changes of the vascular reactivity in the form of increased, decreased and--less frequently--inverse reactions to this stimula. The conclusion is made that polyrheovazographical studies permit to clarify the character and degree of the expressiveness of vascular disorders in most of the patients with vibratio…

Reflex responses of gamma motoneurones to vibration of the muscle they innervate.

1. High frequency vibration was applied to the tendon of the non-contracting triceps surae muscle while recording the background discharges of single gamma fibres only small nerve bundles were cut, leaving most of the nerve supply to the triceps intact. 2. 22% out of a total of sixty-three gamma efferents were tonically inhibited by vibration. The inhibition appeared between 25 and 50mum peak-to-peak amplitude of vibration and increased to a plateau for amplitudes of about 100mum. The dependence of the tonic vibration reflex of alpha-efferents on the amplitude of vibration was found to be simi…
