Fifty-eight body CT scans were obtained in 33 children with malignant disease over a 2-year period at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals. When compared with conventional radiography, excretory urography, nuclear medicine, and ultrasound, CT provided additional information in 26 patients (78%). In 17 patients CT was useful for monitoring response to surgery, radiation therapy, and/or chemotherapy.

From 1993 through 1999, 26 children with retropharyngeal abscess and 2 children with acute epiglottitis were cared for by pediatric otolaryngologists in northern Virginia. Fever, sore throat, dysphagia, refusal to swallow, dysphonia, drooling, and neck extension are common presenting signs and symptoms in acute epiglottitis and in retropharyngeal abscess. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the oropharynx was performed in all cases and was the most helpful diagnostic test.

Pretrial risk assessment tools are used in jurisdictions across the country to assess the likelihood of "pretrial failure," the event where defendants either fail to appear (FTA) for court or reoffend. An opossum (Didelphis virginiana) live-trapped on Parramore Island, Virginia was infected with the lung parasite Capillaria didelphis. Lung lesions associated with this parasite were extensive and consisted of numerous areas with central necrosis deep within the parenchyma. Necrotic foci were present around airways and consisted of a mixture of inflammatory cells and cellular debris, adult nematodes and many bipolar eggs. This parasite causes severe verminous pneumonia in the opossum.

We investigated whether being attacked physically due to one's gender identity or expression was associated with suicide risk among trans men and women living in Virginia. The sample consisted of 350 transgender men and women who participated in the Virginia Transgender Health Initiative Survey (THIS). OBJECTIVE: This prospective, multicenter study evaluated the efficacy and safety of an acellular dermal matrix allograft, DermACELL (D-ADM; LifeNet Health, Virginia Beach, Virginia), in the treatment of large, complex diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) that probed to tendon or bone.
