Vitiligo is a relatively common multifactorial polygenetic dermatosis (0.5%-2% of general population) characterized by segmental or nonsegmental cutaneous depigmentation. Chiari malformation is a congenital cervico-occipital junction disease characterized by a migration of a part of the cerebellum through the foramen magnum. The association between these two pathologies is exceptional and poses a cause-effect problem. We here report the case of a 45-year old woman with no particular previous history who reported bilateral cervico-brachial neuralgias associated with thermal algesic dissociated s…

Repigmentation in vitiligo is the process that replaces, in the epidermal basal layer of vitiligo skin, the mature melanocytes that have been killed by cytotoxic T cells specific for melanocyte antigens. It consists of mobilization of melanocyte precursors in the hair follicle bulge and infundibulum to proliferate, migrate, and differentiate into mature melanocytes, moving from the hair follicle bulge to the interfollicular epidermis. The most common clinical presentation of repigmentation in vitiligo is the perifollicular pattern. The most potent stimulus for repigmentation is the UV light.

Vitiligo, the most common depigmenting disorder, is caused by immune destruction of melanocytes by cytotoxic CD8+ T cells. One weakness in vitiligo management is the lack of an assessment method for active depigmentation. Beginning with reports about increased S100B levels in different inflammatory and tissue damage processes, Speeckaert et al. explored correlations between the S100B dynamics and vitiligo activity, identifying high circulating S100B levels in patients with active depigmentation which were strongly correlated with the extent of affected skin surface. These authors have proposed…

Vitiligo is a chronic auto-immune skin disease, often associated or discovers other autoimmune pathologies. His association with Ophthalmological type pan uveitis and/or neurological type of meningitis and/or inner ear type of hearing loss determines the disease or Vogt -Koyanagi-Harada syndrome (VKH). We related the case of a young woman who consulted for recurrent uveitis for a year, and it was only with the onset of vitiligo lesions that VKH disease diagnosis was discussed and confirmed.

Topical immunotherapy made by diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP) is an alternative treatment that can be used safely and efficaciously in recalcitrant alopecia areata patients. DPCP-induced vitiligo is a rare, but documented, unwanted side effect. The real mechanism of DPCP-induced vitiligo is not well known.

BACKGROUND: Marginal vitiligo, or inflammatory vitiligo with raised borders is a unique subset of vitiligo vulgaris presenting with scattered depigmented, pruritic patches surrounded by a raised, erythematous border. Alternative diagnoses include discoid lupus erythematosus and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.
PURPOSE: To properly guide treatment, it is important to exclude other conditions that present with a similar pattern of depigmentation. This requires the ability to identify specific cutaneous and histologic clues that support this diagnosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 22 year-old man presente…

Vitiligo is an acquired, idiopathic skin disease characterized by the mostly progressive loss of the inherited skin color leading to white patches and in some cases to total depigmentation. The course of this ancient disease is still unknown. The worldwide prevalence range is 0.5-1%. The disease burden includes stigmatization, depression, impaired quality of life, lack of self-confidence, embarrassment and self-consciousness. To the best of our knowledge, the extent to which this chronic disease may exert an influence upon the life course of affected individuals has, to date, not been investig…

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to describe a safer method of removing the epithelium from the eyelid in preparation for melanocyte transplantation in treating segmental eyelid vitiligo.
METHODS: The Erbium yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) laser was used for ablation of the epithelium on the nonpigmented skin of the eyelid. Subsequently, an epithelial skin graft containing melanocytes was applied to the affected area. An occlusive dressing was applied for 2 days.
RESULTS: The skin graft was found to be viable on removal of the dressing, and pigment was evident within the first week. No …

Background. Vitiligo is a common skin disorder characterized by macular depigmentation of the skin. The etiopathogenesis of the disease is still unclear, but there is evidence that autoimmunity and endocrine disfunction may be involved. Objective. The aim of this study was to determine whether vitiligo is statistically associated with thyroid autoimmunity. Method. In a prospective case-control study, we compared the frequency of thyroid autoantibodies (thyroglobulin antibody, anti-Tg and thyroid peroxidase antibody, and anti-TPO) in 33 patients with vitiligo and in 33 healthy volunteers. Thyro…

Low levels of vitamin D have been associated with cardiovascular disease, including myocardial infarction. Vitiligo is a relatively common skin disease. A 70-year-old man was admitted with myocardial infarction; he had a history of hypertension, obesity and cigarette smoking. The patient had also been diagnosed as suffering from vitiligo twenty years before and had been instructed by his doctor to avoid sunlight. His plasma 25-hydroxy vitamin D level was subsequently found to be 12 ng/mL. In this case report, the association between myocardial infarction, hypovitaminosis D and vitiligo is desc…

Alopecia areata is a common cause of noncicatricial alopecia that occurs in a patchy, confluent or diffuse pattern. It may occur as a single, self-limiting episode or may recur at varying intervals over many years. The association of alopecia areata with localized vitiligo has not been reported. The association of alopecia areata with localized vitiligo in the same patient is documented here; it is the first of its kind.

The baboon syndrome is a form of systemic contact dermatitis with skin eruptions in the area of the buttocks and major flexures. Inhalation of mercury vapor causes this rare but distinctive eruption. Broken thermometers are the usual sources of exposure. We hereby present a 14-year-old boy diagnosed with baboon syndrome coexistence with vitiligo, due to broken thermometers. In our case, it was interesting that erythematous eruptions were more evident on the vitiliginous side of the trunk. To our knowledge, there have been no reports in the literature of baboon syndrome and vitiligo coexistence…

A 49-year-old woman presented with a seven-year history of pruritic, erythematous, scaling plaques on sun-exposed skin that localized only to pre-existing depigmented patches. Histopathologic examination showed changes consistent with cutaneous lupus erythematosus with lichenoid features and confirmed contiguous vitiligo. Diagnosis of chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus localized to areas of vitiligo was determined by clinicopathologic correlation and may reflect an autoimmune diathesis. Consequently, hydroxychloroquine and topical glucocorticoids therapy were initiated with reported improve…

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of vitiligo is indicated when lesions are localized in poorly responding areas.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives were: (1) to establish the melanocyte culture obtained from the epidermis of vitiligo patients for future treatment; (2) to estimate the influence of selected factors on the formation of suction blisters and the results of culture; and (3) to compare the results of treatment of vitiliginous macules localized in the dorsum of the hands and lower limbs by transplantation of cultured autologous melanocytes plus psoralen and ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy (CMP), …

BACKGROUND: Oral corticosteroid pulse therapy has provided inconsistent results in the treatment of Indian patients with vitiligo.
OBJECTIVE: We wanted to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of oral dexamethasone pulse therapy in a cohort of Austrian patients with vitiligo.
METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with vitiligo were included in the study. Of these, 25 had progressive and 4 had stable disease. The patients were given weekly pulses of 10 mg dexamethasone each on 2 consecutive days followed by 5 days off treatment for a maximum period of 24 weeks. Clinical response and side ef…
