Position-dependent concentrations of trichloroethylene and methyl-tert-butyl ether are considered for a 2.81-km section of the Aberjona River in Massachusetts, USA. This river flows through Woburn and Winchester (Massachusetts, USA), an area that is highly urbanized, has a long history of industrial activities dating to the early 1800s, and has gained national attention because of contamination from chlorinated solvent compounds in Woburn wells G and H. The river study section is in Winchester and begins approximately five stream kilometers downstream from the Woburn wells superfund site. Appr

INTRODUCTION: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are small, low-vapor-pressure molecules emitted from the surface ocean into the atmosphere. In the atmosphere, VOCs can change OH reactivity and condense onto particles to become cloud condensation nuclei. VOCs are produced by phytoplankton, but the conditions leading to VOC accumulation in the surface ocean are poorly understood.
METHODS: In this study, VOC accumulation was measured in real time over a 12 h day-12 h night cycle in the model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum during exponential growth.
RESULTS: Sixty-three m/z signals were produc…

Air cleaning devices, or "air cleaners", have the potential to improve indoor air by decreasing levels of air pollutants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), in indoor environments. Many commercial air cleaners aimed at removing VOCs adopt chemically active technologies, such as oxidation-based chemistry, in addition to (or instead of) physical removal. However, these technologies risk forming unwanted oxidation byproducts that may cause adverse health effects, which can offset (or even outweigh) the benefits of decreasing the number of VOCs. Studies characterizing byproduct formation…

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive cancer associated with asbestos exposure. MPM is often diagnosed late, at a point where limited treatment options are available, but early intervention could improve the chances of successful treatment for MPM patients. Biomarkers to detect MPM in at-risk individuals are needed to implement early diagnosis technologies. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have previously shown diagnostic potential as biomarkers when analysed in MPM patient breath. In this study, chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) xenografts of MPM cell lines were used as models o…

Glow discharge (GD) source gained an increased level of attention in relation to the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) since past work showed that this soft ionization method allowed direct analysis of VOCs with minimal fragmentation, however, the issue of fragmentation was not previously studied in detail. The aim of the present work was to investigate the effect of discharge conditions on VOC fragmentation in the system consisting of the cell with pulsed glow discharge and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Ionization of VOCs of different classes (hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters,…

Utilization is a sustainable and interesting alternative for the destructive treatment of volatile organic compounds due to avoided CO2 emission. This work concentrates on the development of active and sulfur-tolerant catalysts for the utilization of contaminated methanol. Impregnated and sol-gel prepared vanadia-zirconia and vanadia-hafnia catalysts were thoroughly characterized by N2 sorption, analytical (S)TEM, elemental analysis, XRD and Raman spectroscopy, and their performances were evaluated in formaldehyde production from methanol and methanethiol mixture. The results showed higher act…

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted from a variety of household and personal care products. Many VOCs are known to be potentially toxic or carcinogenic. Synthetic hair is used in hair-styling practices, including practices in African American communities that involve singeing or heating the synthetic hair. The research questions that we sought to answer were as follows: Are VOCs emitted from singed or heated synthetic hair? If so, what are the VOC species and relative masses identified in singed or heated synthetic hair? We tested samples from 2 sources of singed and heated synthetic…

The implications of environmental contamination on human health in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria remain a topic of growing international public health interest. To better understand ongoing air pollution and initiate remediation efforts, the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) report recommended the monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) across different media (water, soil, and air) in Ogoniland, an at-risk population in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. In this pilot study, we measured indoor VOC concentrations in the indoor air of 20 households in Ogale, an Ogoniland …

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pulmonary infection is the hallmark of cystic fibrosis lung disease. Searching for faster and easier screening may lead to faster diagnosis and treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). Our aim was to analyze and build a model to predict the presence of P. aeruginosa in sputa.
METHODS: Sputa from 28 bronchiectatic patients were used for bacterial culturing and analysis of volatile compounds by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Data analysis and model building were done by Partial Least Squares Regression Discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). Two analysis were pe

Ambient concentrations of ozone (O3), nitrogen oxides (NOx), total reactive nitrogen (NOy), nitric acid (HNO3), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were measured during September 2003 at an urban site of Cincinnati, OH. The aim of this study was two-fold: to investigate whether O3 formation in this population exposure-type site is NOx, sensitive or volatile organic compound (VOC) sensitive and to test the practicality of using two combined observational-based methods to identify the sensitivity of O3 formation in midlevel polluted locations. The evaluation of the indicator species: NOy, O3/NOy, O3/HN

Complex metabolic systems have evolved across the tree of life, producing remarkable chemodiversity, yet the structure and evolutionary modes underlying this diversity remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate the macroevolution of chemodiversity using a comprehensive dataset of gymnosperm foliage volatile organic compounds (VOCs) collected from the literature. We find that chemodiversity is dominated by a small fraction of "core" compounds. Although few in number, these core VOCs are widespread and abundant. To understand the full picture, we investigate the macroevolution of both high-d…

Accurate detection and identification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is critical for environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and human health. Currently, microsensor-based VOC detection techniques mainly rely on electrical or frequency-based readout signals, which cannot be used for the identification of chemicals. Herein, we present a visual and intuitive method for identifying VOCs. Our technique is based on the analysis of images generated by photoionization of gas samples using a helium-based dielectric plasma detector. The helium plasma color change upon sample injection is rec…

BACKGROUND: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) and vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) are common vaginal infections; however, the existing techniques for diagnosing these infections are often subjective and inefficient. This study examined the ability of headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) to diagnose BV and VVC by analyzing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in vaginal swabs.
METHODS: A total of 616 study participants were recruited, comprising 152 patients with BV, 174 patients with VVC, and 290 healthy controls. Participants were randomly allocated into a training cohort (n…

The absence of specific markers makes early detection of bladder cancer (BC) challenging. Recent studies have reported the reliable diagnostic significance of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in several cancers. This study aimed to investigate whether urinary VOCs could serve as potential biomarkers for BC. A total of 89 BC patients and 67 healthy individuals were recruited for this study. VOCs in urine samples were detected using gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS). Machine learning algorithms were used to establish diagnostic models for predicting BC based on differential …

This study investigated particle and volatile organic compound (VOC) emission rates (ER) from 3D pens, which are increasingly popular in children's toys. Nine filaments and two 3D pens were evaluated using a flow tunnel, a scanning mobility particle sizer, a proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer for particles, and a thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometer for VOCs. Results showed that the ERs varied with the pen type, filament, and brand. The particle ER was highest for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), followed by polylactic acid (PLA) and polycaprolac

INTRODUCTION: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) progression may be influenced by non-smoking environmental exposures, especially among never-smokers and environmentally exposed populations. Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are relevant because they persist in air, particles, dust, surfaces and biological matrices and can enter the body through inhalation, dust ingestion, diet and dermal uptake. This review aimed to synthesize evidence on SVOC exposure assessment, respiratory and COPD-related outcomes, and candidate metabolomic pathways related to COPD progression.
METHODS: W…

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from coke production originate from multiple stacks and fugitive sources. However, process-specific compositions and reactivities remain poorly characterized. Coke-oven chimney, topside, and near-plant ambient samples were collected from two newly commissioned large-scale top-charging coking plants, and 116 VOC species were quantified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/flame ionization detection (GC-MS/FID). During the sampled operating periods, the measurement-derived coke-oven-chimney VOC emission factors were 0.077 and 0.117 g/kg coke for Plants A a…

Neonicotinoid insecticides (NNs) generate matrix-dependent photoproducts with significant atmospheric implications. Through high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis of five NNs (nitenpyram, thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, clothianidin, and dinotefuran), we demonstrate that solid-phase photolysis produces 2.5 times more gaseous products (430 vs 170 compounds) than liquid-phase reactions. Solid-state transformations yield concerning chlorinated VOCs (13% of products) and 59 light-absorbing brown carbon (BrC) species, while aqueous-phase reactions favor oxygenated CHO compounds (72-100% abundance).

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by certain fungi have previously been suggested to modulate plant development and their response to stresses. While some fungal species, such as Trichoderma harzianum, are known to produce VOCs, the production of VOCs in other phylogenetically divergent species, such as Mucor mucedo, was previously unknown. This study aimed to analyse the VOCs profiles emitted by these fungal species and examine their effects on the growth and defensive responses of Arabidopsis thaliana. Volatilome analysis revealed that the most abundant VOCs for both species were alc…
