Invisible hazards of ultrafine particles (UFPs) from Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) fire smoke as emerging public health risks: A critical review of transformation dynamics from emission sources, exposure pathways, and vulnerable population to WUI fire toxicants.

OBJECTIVE: This review synthesizes atmospheric chemistry, toxicology, and environmental justice to assess public health risks from ultrafine particles (UFPs, <100 nm) in Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) fire smoke. It explores UFP emission sources, transformation dynamics, exposure pathways, and disproportionate impacts on vulnerable populations, while evaluating advanced characterization methods and identifying knowledge gaps and formulating systematic future research directions. MAIN FINDING: WUI fires, driven by climate change and urban expansion, produce UFPs accounting for 77-90 % of parti

Modeling Long-Term Dynamics of Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds (BVOCs) in Germany Based on Major Precursors.

Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds (BVOCs) are organic chemicals emitted primarily by flora. They impact climate and human health, and their presence is influenced by environmental conditions. Despite the intense effects of climate change, there is lack of information about the spatiotemporal variations in BVOC emissions and underlying driving factors. This study aims to quantify the variation of BVOCs in Germany and attribute it to deriving factors. We first conducted a detailed study covering the period from 1979 to 2024, during which satellite observations were first became available. Then

Probing Interactions at the Organic-Inorganic Interface of Biomass Burning Aerosol: Reactivity of Organic Tracer Species with Different Iron Oxide Mineral Phases.

As wildfire events become more frequent, there is a need to better understand the impact of smoke on the environment and human health. Smoke, or biomass burning aerosol (BBA), can undergo atmospheric processing changing its chemical and optical properties. We examined the interactions between four lignin pyrolysis products (catechol, syringol, syringic acid, and vanillic acid) and three BBA-relevant iron oxide mineral phases (hematite, maghemite, and magnetite) using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and dissolved iron measurements to better understand how at

Canadian Forest Fires and the Effects of Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution on Hospitalizations among the Elderly.

In July 2002, lightning strikes ignited over 250 fires in Quebec, Canada, destroying over one million hectares of forest. The smoke plume generated from the fires had a major impact on air quality across the east coast of the U.S. Using data from the Medicare National Claims History File and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National air pollution monitoring network, we evaluated the health impact of smoke exposure on 5.9 million elderly people (ages 65+) in the Medicare population in 81 counties in 11 northeastern and Mid-Atlantic States of the US. We estimated differences in the

Climate change health impacts on children in Canada: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is accelerating; however, effects on child health remain poorly understood. Countries need context-specific evide … cluded. A Canada-specific framework linked rising temperatures, changes in precipitation, increased wildfires, alterations to ecosystems and the spread of vector-borne diseases with child health. These impacts appear to follow existing health inequities. Quality appraisal identified frequent concerns about representativeness and control of confounding in qu …

Vegetation growth is increasingly threatened by both extreme climate events and anthropogenic disturbances. Although considerable attention … er drought events, together with drought-related compound events involving temperature extremes and wildfires, account for 58.5%-59.8% of all NEGs. By the end of the 21st century, up to 50.8% of the global land surface is projected to experience NEGs annually under the high-emission scenario, approximately 1.6 times the simulated historical level. Climate change, environmental exposures, and pediatric asthma exacerbations: air pollution, temperature, and relative humidity.

The prevalence of pediatric asthma exacerbations (AEs) has risen alongside climate change, yet how climate change modifies these exposures t … igh humidity. Lengthening pollen seasons, transitional-weather viral circulation, and more frequent wildfires, hurricanes, floods, and dust storms further increase exacerbation risk. Climate-driven environmental changes contribute to pediatric AEs, though attribution is quantified for only selected exposures. Prevention strategies, including heat- and air-q …

Changing climate, shifting mycotoxins: A comprehensive review of climate change impact on mycotoxin contamination.

Climate change (CC) is a complex phenomenon that has the potential to significantly alter marine, terrestrial, and freshwater ecosystems worldwide. Global warming of 2°C is expected to be exceeded during the 21st century, and the frequency of extreme weather events, including floods, storms, droughts, extreme temperatures, and wildfires, has intensified globally over recent decades, differently affecting areas of the world. How CC may impact multiple food safety hazards is increasingly evident, with mycotoxin contamination in particular gaining in prominence. Research focusing on CC effects on…

Accelerating Clean Energy Transitions to Safeguard Human Health and Survival.

The year 2023 was the warmest year in the 174-year global instrumental record. The year was also marked by a series of climate-related extreme events, including heat waves, storms, and wildfires that caused widespread economic and health impacts. The 28th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change called for transitioning away from fossil fuels and accelerating action in this critical decade. All countries must move rapidly toward net zero emissions and scale up their action to ensure achievement of the Paris climate goals-viz., limiting the global t…

Wood smoke particle exposure in mice reduces the severity of influenza infection.

Elevated ambient temperatures and extreme weather events have increased the incidence of wildfires world-wide resulting in increased wood smoke particle (WSP). Epidemiologic data suggests that WSP exposure associates with exacerbations of respiratory diseases, and with increased respiratory viral infections. To assess the impact of WSP exposure on host response to viral pneumonia, we performed WSP exposures in rodents followed by infection with mouse adapted influenza (HINI-PR8). C57BL/6 male mice aged 6-8 weeks were challenged with WSP or PBS by oropharyngeal aspiration in acute (single dose)…

A national burden assessment of estimated pediatric asthma emergency department visits that may be attributed to elevated ozone levels associated with the presence of smoke.

Asthma is the most common pediatric disease in the USA. It has been consistently demonstrated that asthma symptoms are exacerbated by exposure to ozone. Ozone (O3) is a secondary pollutant produced when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are oxidized in the atmosphere in the presence of nitrogen oxides (NOx). At ground level, elevated ozone is typically formed as a result of human activities. However, wildfires represent an additional source of ozone precursors. Recent evidence suggests that smoke can increase ozone concentrations. We estimated the number of excess asthma-related emergency depa…

Contemporary Review: Temporal Dynamics of Neuroinflammation in Response to Environmental Exposure.

Neuroinflammation is the brain's immune response to injury or disease and can negatively impact neurological functions, ranging from mood, cognition, learning, and memory, as well as promote neurodegenerative disease and even psychiatric conditions. Different environmental factors may trigger a neuroinflammatory response; the mechanisms of this activation may influence the pattern of activation, the immune subsets involved, and the persistence of the response. The duration of neuroinflammation may significantly outlast exposures, creating a potential unique vulnerability for rare or intermitte

TiO2 nanomaterial promotes plant growth and disease resistance.

TiO2 nanomaterials can promote plant growth and enhance disease resistance. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. This study applied TiO2 to promote the growth of wheat, soybean, tobacco, cucumber, and corn. Genetic analysis using macro-element transporter rice mutants in rice revealed that growth promotion induced by TiO2 was dependent on potassium transporter (AKT1), nitrate transporter 1.1B (NRT1.1B), ammonium transporter 1 (AMT1), and phosphate transporter 8 (PT8). TiO2 also enhanced chlorophyll accumulation, and growth promotion was inhibited in the chlorophyll biosynthesis r

Air Sensor Network Analysis Tool: R-Shiny Application.

Poor air quality can harm human health and the environment. Air quality data are needed to understand and reduce exposure to air pollution. Air sensor data can supplement national air monitoring data, allowing for a better understanding of localized air quality and trends. However, these sensors can have limitations, biases, and inaccuracies that must first be controlled to generate data of adequate quality, and analyzing sensor data often requires extensive data analysis. To address these issues, an R-Shiny application has been developed to assist air quality professionals in (1) understandin
