In 1996 the US construction industry comprised 5.4% of the annual US employment but accounted for 7.8% of nonfatal occupational injuries and illness and 9.7% of cases involving at least a day away from work. 625 five consecutive cases of industrial hand injuries attending the Employee's State Insurance Hospital, Jaipur, have been studied from 1983 to October 1986. The incidence of injuries was 36 per 10,000 workers per year. 47% were due to entrapment of the hand in active machines, 25% occurred during lifting and transportation of heavy objects and 12% while handling tools. None reacted to milk alone, bronopol, or Kathon CG. Two workers are receiving workers' compensation because of severe allergic contact dermatitis of the hands to potassium dichromate. We conclude that milk testing laboratory workers are at substantial risk for acquiring allergic contact dermatitis from milk preserved with potassium dichromate.

The objective of this prospective study was to investigate the usefulness of the Orebro Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaire (OMPQ) to predict return to work outcomes following a compensable musculoskeletal injury. Recently, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of opioids to treat chronic noncancer pain. Opioids are also being prescribed in stronger potencies and larger doses for musculoskeletal injuries. We reviewed laboratory-acquired infections occurring in Utah from 1978 through 1982. Written and telephone interviews of supervisors of 1,191 laboratorians revealed an estimated annual incidence of 3 laboratory-acquired infections per 1,000 employees. The number of migrant workers for temporary labor has rapidly increased, alongside high mortality rates in South Korea.
