Parkinson's disease tremor explained by reflex loop changes.

Many Parkinson's Disease tremor behaviors that were considered hard to interpret can be explained by control systems modeling of mid-level motor control. The model in this paper includes stretch reflex loop with feedback delay and tonically controlled antagonist muscles. It also includes Basal Ganglia circuit that commands (schedules) gain changes in the reflex feedback loop. Computational analysis of the control systems model shows how the gain changes might turn the tremor on and off between pose maintenance and voluntary motion in the disease and normal state. The results might be useful fo

Understanding Virus Structure and Dynamics through Molecular Simulations.

Viral outbreaks remain a serious threat to human and animal populations and motivate the continued development of antiviral drugs and vaccines, which in turn benefits from a detailed understanding of both viral structure and dynamics. While great strides have been made in characterizing these systems experimentally, molecular simulations have proven to be an essential, complementary approach. In this work, we review the contributions of molecular simulations to the understanding of viral structure, functional dynamics, and processes related to the viral life cycle. Approaches ranging from coar

Spontaneous rupture of the left renal collecting system during pregnancy.

Spontaneous rupture of a normal renal collecting system during pregnancy is uncommon and all reported cases have occurred in right kidneys. We report a case of spontaneous rupture of the left renal collecting system during pregnancy. A 33-year-old pregnant woman presented with left loin and lower abdominal pain, and signs of preterm labour, at 32 weeks' gestation. An emergency caesarean section was performed for foetal distress but the left loin pain did not subside after delivery. Ultrasonography and a computed tomogram showed a left perinephric collection and urine extravasation, compatible

Reconfigurable Nonlinear Activation Using Low-Loss Ge3Sb2Te15 for Photonic Neural Networks.

The escalating demand for high-performance computing has spurred interest in integrated silicon photonics to overcome the constraints of traditional von Neumann architectures. Reconfigurable photonic devices with low optical loss, high-speed switching, and nonvolatile operation are essential especially for photonic neural networks. This study introduces a robust high-throughput methodology that serves as a primary engine for accelerating compositional search within the ternary Ge-Sb-Te (GST) system. Through this approach, we unveiled Ge3Sb2Te15 (GST3215), a novel optical phase-change material

Enhancing Manufacturing Cell Formation Through Availability-Based Optimization Using the Black Widow Optimizer Metaheuristic.

This study presents a multi-period Generalized Cell Formation Problem with Machine Availability (GCFP-MA) aimed at designing manufacturing cells that explicitly account for equipment reliability, maintainability, and temporal degradation. The proposed model extends classical formulations by introducing (i) availability-based constraints derived from Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) and Markov-Chain models, (ii) downtime penalty costs reflecting non-production losses, and (iii) a multi-period horizon that captures system dynamics over time. To solve the resulting

Protein Self-Interaction in Cellular Function and Network Evolution: Molecular Mechanisms, AI-Driven Insights, and Therapeutic Potentials.

Protein self-interaction to form homodimers and higher-order homo-oligomers is a ubiquitous phenomenon fundamental to living organisms. Recent structural, system-level, and computational insights reveal that self-interacting proteins dictate the specificity, rewiring, and topological complexity of cellular signaling networks and macromolecular assemblies. Beyond their physiological roles, aberrant or dysregulated homotypic interactions disrupt cellular proteostasis, driving the formation of toxic non-native oligomers, pathological amyloid fibrillization, or aberrant liquid-liquid phase separat

Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return in Lung Cancer Surgery: Diagnostic Challenges and Surgical Considerations in Two Cases.

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) is a rare congenital anomaly in which one or more pulmonary veins drain into the systemic venous system instead of the left atrium, in the absence of associated cardiac defects such as atrial septal defect. When only a single anomalous pulmonary vein is involved, the resulting shunt volume is typically small, allowing asymptomatic progression into advanced age. Consequently, such cases are often incidentally diagnosed or remain undetected. We report herein two cases of PAPVR that required pulmonary resection for primary or metastatic lung cance

Toward animal-free approaches in subcutaneous drug delivery: A pain management case study.

Subcutaneous (s.c.) administration offers practical advantages for long-acting drug delivery, yet its complex tissue environment, lack of standardized models, and limited regulatory guidance pose challenges for predicting pharmacokinetics (PK). Here, we present a complementary set of experimental and computational approaches to reduce reliance on animal testing while maintaining translational relevance. Ex vivo skin models captured the influence of tissue variability, while 3D-printed constructs and molded agarose hydrogels enabled standardized, reproducible in vitro drug release studies. In p

MediONN: an integrated photonic chip optical neural network for deep learning-based semantic segmentation in early detection of pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer remains one of the deadliest cancers due to the lack of effective early detection tools. While deep neural networks (DNNs) have shown promise in tumor segmentation, electronic accelerators suffer from power inefficiency and latency. To address this, we propose MediONN-a photonic neural network system implemented on an integrated chip, optimized for 3D medical image segmentation. MediONN integrates a 4×4 photonic neural processor within a hierarchical 3D optical computation framework. To improve training convergence, we introduce a segmentation-specific Gaussian weight initial

Visible-Light Hyperspectral Reconstruction and PCA-Based Feature Extraction for Malignant Pleural Effusion Cytology.

Malignant pleural effusion, commonly referred to as MPE, is a prevalent complication associated with individuals diagnosed with neoplastic disorders. The data acquired by pleural fluid cytology is beneficial for diagnostic objectives. Consequently, the initial step in the diagnostic procedure for lung cancer is the analysis of pleural effusion fluid. This research aims to provide a cutting-edge model for analyzing PE cytology images. This model utilizes a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system that integrates hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology for the classification of spectral variations.

Imaging of acute appendicitis: Advances.

We read with interest the review by Teng et al, who summarized the current approach to the diagnosis and treatment of acute appendicitis (AA). Also, the article summarizes the clinical scoring systems very effectively. In one of the previous studies conducted by our research group, we showed that the use of the Alvarado score, ultrasound and C-reactive protein values in combination provides a safe confirmation or exclusion of the diagnosis of AA. Computed tomography is particularly sensitive in detecting periappendiceal abscess, peritonitis and gangrenous changes. Computed tomography is not a

Artificial intelligence manages congenital cataract with individualized prediction and telehealth computing.

A challenge of chronic diseases that remains to be solved is how to liberate patients and medical resources from the burdens of long-term monitoring and periodic visits. Precise management based on artificial intelligence (AI) holds great promise; however, a clinical application that fully integrates prediction and telehealth computing has not been achieved, and further efforts are required to validate its real-world benefits. Taking congenital cataract as a representative, we used Bayesian and deep-learning algorithms to create CC-Guardian, an AI agent that incorporates individualized predict

Probing intermediate stages of shape processing.

The visual system provides a representation of what and where objects are. This entails parsing the visual scene into distinct objects. Initially, the visual system encodes information locally. While interactions between adjacent cells can explain how local fragments of an object's contour are extracted from a scene, such computations are ill suited to capture extended objects. This article reviews some of the evidence in favor of intermediate-level computations, tuned to the shape of an object, in the transformation from discrete local sampling to representation of complex objects. Two main p

Orthognathic positioning system: intraoperative system to transfer virtual surgical plan to operating field during orthognathic surgery.

PURPOSE: To introduce the concept and use of an occlusal-based "orthognathic positioning system" (OPS) to be used during orthognathic surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The OPS consists of intraoperative occlusal-based devices that transfer virtual surgical planning to the operating field for repositioning of the osteotomized dentoskeletal segments. The system uses detachable guides connected to an occlusal splint. An initial drilling guide is used to establish stable references or landmarks. These are drilled on the bone that will not be repositioned adjacent to the osteotomy line. After mobili
