BACKGROUND: The recent Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak, with 28,646 reported cases and 11,323 deaths, was declared a public health emergency of international interest by the World Health Organisation. In Spain, a single reported case triggered a public health crisis of a markedly media-centred nature. The approach to the first EVD epidemic has given rise to various ethical considerations around the world. We address the most relevant ethical considerations emanating from the management of EVD in Spain.

OBJECTIVE: To detect serum Chlamydia pneumoniae (C.pneumonia) antibodies and analyze the epidemiologic data.
METHODS: Micro-immunofluorescence (MIF) was used to detect IgG and IgM antibodies against C.pneumoniae in 7 802 serum specimens from May 2008 to September 2013. BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are prevalent in many areas, including northern Tanzania, yet little is known about their interaction.
METHODS: We enrolled febrile inpatients at two hospitals in Moshi, Tanzania, over 1 year and performed HIV antibody testing and the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) for leptospirosis. Confirmed leptospirosis was defined as ≥ four-fold rise in MAT titer between acute and convalescent serum samples, and probable leptospirosis was defined as any reciprocal MAT titer ≥ 800.

The serological response to Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection was usually poor in its early course; convalescent serum was needed in most cases, which was sometimes difficult to obtain in children.
