The influence of dietary protein intake on milk production and blood composition of high-yielding dairy cows.

Cows were fed either 75 or 100% of the recommended intake levels for protein and 100% of recommended energy levels (Agricultural Research Council, 1965) from 8 weeks pre-calving until 14 weeks post calving. From 14 weeks post calving and to the end of lactation all the cows received 100% of the recommended protein and energy intakes. The mean of the 305-d milk yields of the 2 groups was not significantly different and although cows on the lower protein intake produced less lactose during the first 14 weeks of lactation there was no significant difference in total lactose, fat, protein or total

Negative dietary cation and anion difference supplementation of twin-bearing Merino ewes grazing pasture in late gestation did not affect lamb growth or survival.

Each year in Australia, 53% of lamb mortalities are attributed to dystocia, with subclinical maternal calcium deficiencies likely contributing to dystocia rates. A negative dietary cation and anion difference (DCAD) diet has increased circulating calcium in sheep. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of supplementing twin-bearing, grazing ewes with a negative DCAD partial mixed ration (PMR) during late gestation on ewe calcium and magnesium concentrations and subsequent lamb growth and survival. On day 120 of gestation (dG), blood samples were collected from 115 twin-bearing

Micronutrients in immune ageing and diabetic wound healing: modulating inflammation and promoting tissue repair.

Immune ageing, characterized by a decline in immune function and increased chronic inflammation, significantly impacts tissue repair mechanisms, particularly in diabetic wounds. Diabetic individuals often experience delayed wound healing due to impaired immune responses and persistent inflammation, making effective management of chronic wounds a challenge. Recent studies suggest that micronutrients, which play an essential role in modulating immune responses and inflammatory pathways, have the potential to mitigate these age-related dysfunctions and improve wound healing outcomes. This review

Cardiorenal Syndrome: Molecular Pathways Linking Cardiovascular Dysfunction and Chronic Kidney Disease Progression.

Cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) is a multifactorial clinical condition characterized by the bidirectional deterioration of cardiac and renal function, driven by mechanisms such as renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) overactivation, systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and fibrosis. The aim of this narrative review is to explore the key molecular pathways involved in CRS and to highlight emerging therapeutic approaches, with a special emphasis on nutritional interventions. We examined recent evidence on the contribution of mitochondrial dysfunction, uremic toxins

Nutritional and Bioactive Characterization of Amaranthaceae Seeds From Peru, Slovakia, and Poland: A Comparative Study.

Amaranthus sp. represents a promising pseudocereal due to its resilience to adverse environmental conditions and extensive nutritional benefits. This study evaluated amaranth samples from Peru, Slovakia, and Poland to compare their proximate composition, mineral content, amino acid profiles, antioxidant potential, and specific lipid fractions (phytosterols, squalene, and tocopherols). Results revealed significant regional variability: Polish cultivars generally exhibited the highest (p < 0.05) protein and squalene concentrations, while certain Peruvian kiwicha varieties excelled (p < 0.05) in

Nutritional Support of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Background: COPD is a heterogenous disease of the respiratory tract caused by diverse genetic factors along with environmental and lifestyle-related effects such as industrial dust inhalation and, most frequently, cigarette smoking. These factors lead to airflow obstruction and chronic respiratory symptoms. Additionally, the increased risk of infections exacerbates airway inflammation in COPD patients. As a consequence of the complex pathomechanisms and difficulty in treatment, COPD is among the leading causes of mortality both in the western countries and in the developing world. Results: The

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs)-An Evidence-Based Review of Indications, Efficacy, Harms, and Deprescribing.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are among the most prescribed drugs worldwide owing to their proven efficacy in symptom control and mucosal healing for acid-related disorders including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD), peptic ulcer disease, Helicobacter pylori eradication, functional dyspepsia, and gastroprotection in high-risk patients. However, long-term use beyond approved indications is increasingly common and has raised safety concerns. Observational studies link chronic PPI use to a myriad of adverse outcomes such as enteric infections (e.g., Clostridioides difficile), nutrient defic

Nanopatterned silk-coated AZ31 magnesium alloy with enhanced antibacterial and corrosion properties.

Because of unique properties such as the lightweight, natural biodegradability, and biocompatibility, magnesium alloys are promising in biomedical implants. However, inadequate corrosion resistance in the physiological environment remains a technical hurdle and application of coatings is a viable means to overcome the deficiency. Also, the antibacterial properties are very important in order to mitigate post-implantation complications arising from bacterial infection. In this study, a biocompatible silk film is deposited on AZ31 Mg alloy to enhance the corrosion resistance and by means of oxyg

Is a Gluten-Free Diet Enough to Maintain Correct Micronutrients Status in Young Patients with Celiac Disease?

The current study assesses whether the use of a gluten-free diet (GFD) is sufficient for maintaining correct iron status in children with celiac disease (CD). The study included 101 children. The celiac group (n = 68) included children with CD, with long (> 6 months) (n = 47) or recent (< 6 months) (n = 21) adherence to a GFD. The control group (n = 43) included healthy children. Dietary assessment was performed by a food frequency questionnaire and a 3-day food record. Celiac children had lower iron intake than controls, especially at the beginning of GFD (p < 0.01). The group CD-GFD >6 month

Nutrition, Obesity, and Cachexia in Patients With Heart Failure: A Consensus Statement from the Heart Failure Society of America Scientific Statements Committee.

Dietary guidance for patients with heart failure (HF) has traditionally focused on sodium and fluid intake restriction, but dietary quality is frequently poor in patients with HF and may contribute to morbidity and mortality. Restrictive diets can lead to inadequate intake of macronutrients and micronutrients by patients with HF, with the potential for deficiencies of calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, thiamine, vitamins D, E, and K, and folate. Although inadequate intake and low plasma levels of micronutrients have been associated with adverse clinical outcomes, evidence supporting therapeutic r

Relationship between pre-pregnancy body mass index and mineral concentrations in serum and amniotic fluid in pregnant women during labor.

The aim of the study was to determine the correlations between body mass index (BMI) values before pregnancy and the concentrations of selected elements (Mg, Co, Cu, Zn, Sr, Cd, Ba, Pb, U, Ca, Cr, Al, Mn, V, Fe) in blood serum and amniotic fluid (AF) in pregnant women. Elemental analysis of serum and amniotic fluid in 225 Polish women (Caucasian/white) showed a relationship between the concentration of minerals in the above-mentioned samples and the pre-pregnancy BMI. Analysis of blood serum was performed by using ICP-MS and it demonstrated that iron concentration was significantly lower in ov

Dietary Mg2+ regulates the epithelial Mg2+ channel TRPM6 in rat mammary tissue.

The epithelial Mg(2+) channel TRPM6 is considered a pivotal component in active Mg(2+)absorption and re-absorption in the intestine and kidney, but its expression and function in other tissues are largely unknown. We have previously demonstrated that extracellular Mg(2+) availability modulates TRPM6, but not the ubiquitous TRPM7, in cultured mammary epithelial cells; in addition, TRPM6 protein expression correlated to Mg(2+) influx capacities. Our results closely remind the modulation of TRPM6 described by others in murine kidney and colon following Mg(2+) dietary restriction. We sought to val

Mineral profile and variability in vegetable amaranth (Amaranthus tricolor).

Populations in North India depend on a number of vegetable crops of which Amaranthus spp. is the most important since it is the only crop available in the hot summer months when no other foliage crop grows in the field. However, reports on mineral composition of leaves are rare with absolutely no information on the qualitative improvement of foliage yield with special reference to minerals. Studies on correlation among the minerals as well as with yield and leaf attributes are also lacking. Hence, we report the proximate mineral composition in 30 strains of A. tricolor along with some suggesti
