Artificial neural network predictive models for optimizing the training process in race walking: a longitudinal observational study.

INTRODUCTION: HIV infection is frequently transmitted within stable couple partnerships. In order to prevent HIV acquisition in HIV-negative couples, as well as improve coping in couples with an HIV-positive diagnosis, it has been suggested that interventions be aimed at strengthening couple relationships, in addition to addressing individual behaviours. However, little is known about factors that influence relationships to impact joint decision-making related to HIV. METHODS: We conducted qualitative in-depth interviews with 40 pregnant women and 40 male partners in southwestern Kenya, an ar

Application of artificial neural networks to investigate one-carbon metabolism in Alzheimer's disease and healthy matched individuals.

Folate metabolism, also known as one-carbon metabolism, is required for several cellular processes including DNA synthesis, repair and methylation. Impairments of this pathway have been often linked to Alzheimer's disease (AD). In addition, increasing evidence from large scale case-control studies, genome-wide association studies, and meta-analyses of the literature suggest that polymorphisms of genes involved in one-carbon metabolism influence the levels of folate, homocysteine and vitamin B12, and might be among AD risk factors. We analyzed a dataset of 30 genetic and biochemical variables (

GabROP: Gabor Wavelets-Based CAD for Retinopathy of Prematurity Diagnosis via Convolutional Neural Networks.

One of the most serious and dangerous ocular problems in premature infants is retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a proliferative vascular disease. Ophthalmologists can use automatic computer-assisted diagnostic (CAD) tools to help them make a safe, accurate, and low-cost diagnosis of ROP. All previous CAD tools for ROP diagnosis use the original fundus images. Unfortunately, learning the discriminative representation from ROP-related fundus images is difficult. Textural analysis techniques, such as Gabor wavelets (GW), can demonstrate significant texture information that can help artificial int

Simple and complex cells revisited: toward a selectivity-invariance model of object recognition.

This paper presents a theoretical perspective on modeling ventral stream processing by revisiting the computational abstraction of simple and complex cells. In parallel to David Marr's vision theory, we organize the new perspective into three levels. At the computational level, we abstract simple and complex cells into space partitioning and composition in a topological space based on the redundancy exploitation hypothesis of Horace Barlow. At the algorithmic level, we present a hierarchical extension of sparse coding by exploiting the manifold constraint in high-dimensional space (i.e., the b

The role of multi-area interactions for the computation of apparent motion.

Apparent motion (AM) is a robust visual illusion, in which fast displays of static objects in successively different positions elicit the perception of object motion. Neurons in higher order areas 21 and 19 compute object motion under such conditions and send feedback to early visual areas 18 and 17, which is instrumental in eliciting computation of motion in those very areas. To explore the computational dynamics of AM, we made a neural field model consisting of two one-dimensional rings of simple neurons expressing firing rates, one for areas 17/18 and one for areas 19/21. The model neurons,

Multi-scale feature fusion-based vision mamba for robust plant disease image classification on field-acquired plantdoc data.

INTRODUCTION: Existing convolutional neural networks and Transformers cannot effectively capture fine-grained local lesion features and long-range contextual dependencies simultaneously in field-collected plant images. To address this research limitation, we aim to design an effective lightweight model suitable for plant disease identification in complex field scenarios. METHODS: This work proposes an improved Vision Mamba network for plant disease classification based on the challenging PlantDoc dataset. Three dedicated modules are embedded into the framework, including the Multi-Scale Featu

Image-based deep learning in diagnosing mycoplasma pneumonia on pediatric chest X-rays.

BACKGROUND: Correctly diagnosing and accurately distinguishing mycoplasma pneumonia in children has consistently posed a challenge in clinical practice, as it can directly impact the prognosis of affected children. To address this issue, we analyzed chest X-rays (CXR) using various deep learning models to diagnose pediatric mycoplasma pneumonia. METHODS: We collected 578 cases of children with mycoplasma infection and 191 cases of children with virus infection, with available CXR sets. Three deep convolutional neural networks (ResNet50, DenseNet121, and EfficientNetv2-S) were used to distingu

Deep learning based detection of monkeypox virus using skin lesion images.

As we set into the second half of 2022, the world is still recovering from the two-year COVID-19 pandemic. However, over the past three months, the outbreak of the Monkeypox Virus (MPV) has led to fifty-two thousand confirmed cases and over one hundred deaths. This caused the World Health Organisation to declare the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). If this outbreak worsens, we could be looking at the Monkeypox virus causing the next global pandemic. As Monkeypox affects the human skin, the symptoms can be captured with regular imaging. Large samples of these

Detecting variability of internal carotid arterial Doppler signals by Lyapunov exponents.

The new method presented in this study was directly based on the consideration that internal carotid arterial Doppler signals are chaotic signals. This consideration was tested successfully using the nonlinear dynamics tools, like the computation of Lyapunov exponents. Multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) architecture was formulated and used as a basis for detecting variabilities such as stenosis and occlusion in the physical state of internal carotid arterial Doppler signals. The computed Lyapunov exponents of the internal carotid arterial Doppler signals were used as inputs of the ML

Photomapping electrically coupled networks of the mature thalamus and cortex.

Electrical synapses are expressed ubiquitously across the brain and are crucial components of active neural circuitry and connectomes. Identification of coupled networks in living tissue is limited by technical demands of multiplexed recordings, and no dyes, fluorescent reporters, or genetic labels can now fill the gap. We introduce a novel method of identifying and quantifying electrical synapses, opto-δL, that combines focal photostimulation of soma-targeted opsins with a spike timing-based computation for the strength of electrical synapses to rapidly measure and map electrically coupled ne

Calcium-based synaptic and structural plasticity link pathological activity to synaptic reorganization in Parkinson's disease.

Motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) are associated with dopaminergic neuronal loss. Widespread synaptic reorganization and neural activity changes, including exaggerated beta oscillations and bursting, follow dopamine depletion (DD) of the basal ganglia (BG). Our computational model examines DD-induced neural activity changes and synaptic reorganization in the BG subcircuit comprising the subthalamic nucleus and globus pallidus externus. Calcium-dependent synaptic and structural plasticity mechanisms were incorporated, allowing neural activity to alter network topology. We show how hype

Deep visual detection system for oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) is a widespread and aggressive malignancy where early and accurate detection is essential for improving patient outcomes. Traditional diagnostic methods relying on histopathological examination are often time-consuming, resource-intensive, and susceptible to subjective interpretation. Moreover, inter-observer variability can further compromise diagnostic consistency, leading to delays in timely intervention. In recent years, advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computer-aided diagnostic systems have shown transformative potential in medic

Diffusion-based knowledge distillation for effective multi-organ segmentation with reduced computational time.

Accurate and efficient multi-organ segmentation is crucial for clinical workflows, requiring high accuracy and reduced computational time. In this research, we propose a 3D diffusion-based knowledge distillation framework (3DKD-DiffuseNet) for multi-organ segmentation to achieve higher accuracy with reduced computational time. The core idea is to enhance the training of a lightweight student model by integrating a diffusion mechanism that guides feature learning during knowledge transfer from a high-capacity teacher model. Unlike conventional distillation approaches that rely solely on soft la

Deep learning with uncertainty estimation for automatic tumor segmentation in PET/CT of head and neck cancers: impact of model complexity, image processing and augmentation.

Objective.Target volumes for radiotherapy are usually contoured manually, which can be time-consuming and prone to inter- and intra-observer variability. Automatic contouring by convolutional neural networks (CNN) can be fast and consistent but may produce unrealistic contours or miss relevant structures. We evaluate approaches for increasing the quality and assessing the uncertainty of CNN-generated contours of head and neck cancers with PET/CT as input.Approach.Two patient cohorts with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and baseline18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography and c

Boundary-Repairing Dual-Path Network for Retinal Layer Segmentation in OCT Image with Pigment Epithelial Detachment.

Automatic retinal layer segmentation in optical coherence tomography (OCT) images is crucial for the diagnosis of ocular diseases. Currently, automatic retinal layer segmentation works well with normal OCT images. However, pigment epithelial detachment (PED) dramatically alters the retinal structure, causing blurred boundaries and partial disappearance of the Bruch's Membrane (BM), thus posing challenges to the segmentation. To tackle these problems, we propose a novel dual-path U-shaped network for simultaneous layer segmentation and boundary regression. This network first designs a feature i

A novel lightweight deep learning approach for simultaneous optic cup and optic disc segmentation in glaucoma detection.

Glaucoma is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that can result in irreversible vision loss if not treated in its early stages. The cup-to-disc ratio is a key criterion for glaucoma screening and diagnosis, and it is determined by dividing the area of the optic cup (OC) by that of the optic disc (OD) in fundus images. Consequently, the automatic and accurate segmentation of the OC and OD is a pivotal step in glaucoma detection. In recent years, numerous methods have resulted in great success on this task. However, most existing methods either have unsatisfactory segmentation accuracy or high t

Brain tumor detection and segmentation using deep learning.

OBJECTIVES: Brain tumor detection, classification and segmentation are challenging due to the heterogeneous nature of brain tumors. Different deep learning-based algorithms are available for object detection; however, the performance of detection algorithms on brain tumor data has not been widely explored. Therefore, we aim to compare different object detection algorithms (Faster R-CNN, YOLO & SSD) for brain tumor detection on MRI data. Furthermore, the best-performing detection network is paired with a 2D U-Net for pixel-wise segmentation of abnormal tumor cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The p

Segmentation of Overlapping Cervical Cells with Mask Region Convolutional Neural Network.

The task of segmenting cytoplasm in cytology images is one of the most challenging tasks in cervix cytological analysis due to the presence of fuzzy and highly overlapping cells. Deep learning-based diagnostic technology has proven to be effective in segmenting complex medical images. We present a two-stage framework based on Mask RCNN to automatically segment overlapping cells. In stage one, candidate cytoplasm bounding boxes are proposed. In stage two, pixel-to-pixel alignment is used to refine the boundary and category classification is also presented. The performance of the proposed method
