Canine idiopathic chylothorax: Anatomic characterization of the pre- and postoperative thoracic duct using computed tomography lymphography.

Surgical treatment has improved the prognosis of canine idiopathic chylothorax, although a recurrence of the disease occurs occasionally after the procedure. An improved understanding of possible causes for this recurrence would be helpful for prognosis and treatment planning in affected patients. In this retrospective case series study, we described the detailed pre- and postoperative computed tomographic lymphography (CTLG) imaging characteristics for a group of dogs with surgically confirmed idiopathic chylothorax. Preoperative CTLG was performed in 12 of 14 dogs diagnosed with idiopathic c

Application of indocyanine green injection guided by electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy in localization of pulmonary nodules.

BACKGROUND: Accurate localization of pulmonary nodules becomes a crucial step in diagnosis and treatment. However, the efficacy and accuracy of electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB)-guided localization with indocyanine green (ICG) injection for video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lung resection remain unclear. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed that patients who had small pulmonary nodules and underwent lung resection after ENB-guided localization were included from Oct 2018 to Mar 2021. The analysis of the efficacy and accuracy of ENB-guided localization was conduct

Use of the Human Broncho® Double-Lumen Tube in a Tracheal Bronchus Patient After Failed Lung Isolation with a Broncho-Cath™: A Case Report.

Airway management for one-lung ventilation may be challenging for anesthesiologists depending on the location of the tracheal bronchus orifice and possible anatomical distortions. Polyvinyl chloride double-lumen tube Broncho-Cath™ has been successfully used for one-lung ventilation in most cases of tracheal bronchus arising within 2 cm above the carina. However, there have been reports of occasional failure. A 78-year-old male patient diagnosed with secondary pneumothorax was scheduled for video-assisted thoracic surgery, and the tracheal bronchus originating 1.9 cm above the carina was shown

The surgical outcome of minimally invasive pharyngo-laryngo-oesophagectomy in prone position.

PURPOSE: Pharyngo-laryngo-oesophagectomy (PLE) which is mainly indicated for cervical oesophageal cancer or synchronous double cancer of the thoracic oesophagus and the pharynx or larynx, is extremely invasive. Since minimally invasive oesophagectomy (MIE) using video-assisted thoracic surgery has become popular recently, the procedure can be adopted to PLE. Moreover, the use of the prone position (PP) in MIEs has been increasing recently because technical advantages and fewer post-operative complications were reported. To assess the validity of PP, this study compared surgical outcomes of min

Giant cell carcinoma of the lung presenting as an isolated cyst containing air: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinomas (PSCs) are rare tumors within the sarcomatoid carcinoma group. Giant cell carcinoma of the lung (GCCL) is a rare type of PSCs that consists entirely of highly pleomorphic tumor giant cells; the prognosis is poor. PATIENT CONCERNS: A patient presented with a single cyst and was diagnosed with GCCL. The patient was a 59-year-old male who was admitted to the hospital with a cough. A chest computerized tomography (CT) scan showed a single, thin-walled cyst containing air in the left upper lobe of the lung. Bronchoscopy revealed chronic bronchitis. Th

Is polysomnographic examination necessary for subjects with diaphragm pathologies?

OBJECTIVES: While respiratory distress is accepted as the only indication for diaphragmatic plication surgery, sleep disorders have been underestimated. In this study, we aimed to detect the sleep disorders that accompany diaphragm pathologies. Specifically, the association of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome with diaphragm eventration and diaphragm paralysis was evaluated. METHODS: This study was performed in Süreyyapasa Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Training and Research Hospital between 2014-2016. All patients had symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea (snoring and/or cessation of breat

Transoral robotic-assisted skull base surgery to approach the sella turcica: cadaveric study.

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) offers new possibilities that have not been experimented in the field of minimally invasive skull base neurosurgery. We propose to evaluate the feasibility of transoral approach to the sella turcica with the da Vinci system on cadavers. We performed four robot-assisted dissections on human fresh cadavers in order to reach the pituitary fossa by the oral cavity. Cavum mucosa dissection was performed by the head and neck surgeon at the console and then the sphenoid was drilled by the neurosurgeon at the bedside, with intraoperative fluoroscopy and a "double surge

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgical thymectomy to treat early thymoma: a comparison with the conventional transsternal approach.

BACKGROUND: For thymoma, the feasibility of resection via video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) remains controversial. The objective of our study was to compare the outcomes of VATS and transsternal thymectomy in order to evaluate the efficacy of the VATS method for treatment of early stage thymoma. METHODS: This study is a retrospective study of 120 patients who underwent thymectomy of early stage thymoma (Masaoka stage I and II) in a single medical center from 1991 to 2010. Of these patients, 76 patients underwent VATS thymectomy (VATS group) and 44 patients underwent the conventional

Image characteristics as predictors for thoracoscopic anatomic lung resection in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: A variety of complications occur in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. The feasibility of a thoracoscopic approach to anatomic lung resection for the complications of mycobacterial infection has not been well evaluated. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed chest computed tomography (CT) scans of patients who underwent anatomic lung resections without additional procedures for tuberculosis between January 2007 and September 2009. Image characteristics on chest CT scans were classified as bullae, pleural thickening, peribronchial lymph node calcification, tuberculoma, cavity, asp

Lipoid pneumonia: a challenging diagnosis.

Lipoid pneumonia is a rare medical condition, and is usually classified into two groups, ie, exogenous or endogenous, depending on the source of lipids found in the lungs. Exogenous lipoid pneumonia may result from the aspiration of food and lipids. Although most cases are asymptomatic, common symptoms include cough, dyspnea, chest pain, pleural effusions, fever, and hemoptysis. Radiologically, lipoid pneumonia can manifest as consolidations, pulmonary nodules, or soft-tissue densities. These presentations involve a wide differential diagnosis, including lung cancer. Other rare causes of fatty

Safety and Efficacy of Single-Stage Synchronous Bilateral VATS Talc Poudrage for Malignant Pleural Effusion.

Backgrounds/Objectives: Malignant pleural effusion (MPE) is a frequent complication of advanced cancer, and talc pleurodesis via video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) represents a standard palliative treatment with high efficacy. However, evidence regarding synchronous bilateral pleurodesis in patients with bilateral MPE is limited. This study evaluates the feasibility, safety, and outcomes of a single-stage bilateral VATS talc pleurodesis approach. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients undergoing synchronous bilateral VATS talc poudrage between 2000 and 2025 at a s

Staged uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic bilateral lower lobectomy for bilateral intralobar pulmonary sequestration complicated by Aspergillus infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral pulmonary sequestration (BPS) is an exceptionally rare congenital bronchopulmonary and vascular anomaly. Its complex anatomy and aberrant systemic arterial supply make diagnosis and treatment difficult, especially when severe fungal infection is present. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old woman presented with a 1-year history of cough and hemoptysis and bilateral lower-lung masses. CT with 3D reconstruction showed bilateral intralobar pulmonary sequestration linked by an anomalous fistulous tract across the posterior mediastinum and supplied by multiple arteries from the d

Pediatric solitary pulmonary tuberculoma mimicking peripheral pulmonary hamartoma with extensive pleural adhesions: a case report.

This report describes a rare case of solitary pulmonary tuberculoma in a pediatric patient. A 13-year-old male presented with a progressively enlarging solitary nodule in the left lung, identified via chest computed tomography (CT). The patient had no obvious symptoms of tuberculosis and no known history of exposure. The tuberculin skin test was negative. The imaging findings strongly resembled a peripheral pulmonary hamartoma, leading to a preliminary diagnosis of pulmonary hamartoma with plans for video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery resection. Intraoperative findings revealed extensive and

Characterization of pleural metastasis in non-small cell carcinomas undergoing intraoperative frozen section examination.

BACKGROUND: Pleural biopsy via open surgery or video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery is consistently performed in patients with non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) for diagnostic tumor confirmation, tumor staging, and tumor tissue acquisition. We investigated the clinicopathological characteristics of pleural metastasis in NSCLC, with a specific focus on the comparison between adenocarcinoma (ADC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC). This study aimed to quantify how intraoperative gross finding predicts a positive-for-malignancy (PFM) diagnosis on frozen sections and to delineate histology-spe
