The susceptibility of clinical isolates of methicillin-susceptible and -resistant staphylococci from cancer patients with central venous catheter bacteremia to quinupristin/dalfopristin, a semisynthetic streptogramin, was determined in vitro. This national surveillance study presents the in vitro activities of the main antimicrobial agents against 1,331 S. pneumoniae isolates as tested by an agar dilution method according to the guidelines of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (formerly NCCLS). The strains were isolated in several regions of Portugal from cases of invasive disease over an 11-year period (1994 to 2004). At Duke University Medical Center, 49 patients with proved clostridial myonecrosis were treated with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) during the past 10 years. Survival in patients with involvement confined to the extremities was 92.3 percent.
