Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy (UCMD) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by generalized muscular weakness, contractures of multiple joints, and distal hyperextensibility. Homozygous and compound heterozygous mutations of COL6A2 on chromosome 21q22 have recently been shown to cause UCMD. We performed a genomewide screening with microsatellite markers in a consanguineous family with three sibs affected with UCMD. Linkage of the disease to chromosome 2q37 was found in this family and in two others. We analyzed COL6A3, which encodes the alpha3 chain of collagen VI, and identif

A 34-year-old woman noted difficulty of gait initiation, then dilated finger opening and hyperhidrosis appeared. Her stature was a muscular habitus, and muscle stiffness and myokymia were found in all muscles of the extremities. Her stiffness persisted during sleep. Her calf muscles were large and a contracture was noticed in ankle joints. There was no evidence of wasting and weakness. A remarkable delay in voluntary relaxation of the contracted muscles without percussion myotonia was recognized. Tendon reflexes of lower extremities were absent. Laboratory examination revealed elevation of CPK

BACKGROUND: Weill-Marchesani syndrome 4 (WMS4) is caused by ADAMTS17 gene variant and clinical abnormalities including lenticular myopia, ectopia lentis, glaucoma, microspherophakia, brachydactyly, and short stature. Due to free of heart defects and joint stiffness compared with other WMS forms, WMS4 has an insidious onset and is often misdiagnosed as high myopia. We combined multiple imaging biometry and whole-exome sequencing to diagnose a case of WMS4 with a 3-year follow-up.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old boy presented to our ophthalmology department with progressive myopia for 1 year.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing plastic surgery have traditionally been instructed to avoid anticoagulants and antiplatelets during the perioperative period to avoid bleeding that could lead to painful hematomas, skin necrosis, unplanned procedures, and blood transfusions. Many veterans are currently prescribed anticoagulants for prevention of life- and limb-threatening embolic and thrombotic events. In early 2015, the plastic surgery service began to instruct patients undergoing elective hand surgery to stay on their prescription anticoagulant perioperatively. The objective of this study was

INTRODUCTION: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is characterized by searing pain, hyperalgesia, edema, allodynia, and skin changes. CRPS may be difficult to diagnose and to treat given poorly understood mechanisms as well as its presentation of symptoms that may mimic common conditions such as joint stiffness in this condition as well as rheumatoid arthritis.
CASE REPORT: A 71-year-old female presented to our clinic post shingles of the right upper extremity. We diagnosed her with CRPS based on the Budapest diagnostic criteria and the clinical findings of pain and decreased the range of m

BACKGROUND: Plate and screw fixation was introduced for complex fractures of the hand. Several risk factors for a poor functional outcome have been identified, but there is a paucity of evidence regarding predictors of finger stiffness in difficult hand fractures. The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to identify independent prognostic factors of the postoperative total active motion (%TAM) in the treatment of metacarpal and phalangeal fractures.
METHODS: Seventy-two patients (62 males, 10 females; 37±15 years) with periarticular fractures involving metaphyseal comminution and disp

BACKGROUND: The present study is a retrospective investigation of patients who underwent surgery for recurrence of Dupuytren's contracture. We discuss the indications for this intervention, operative methods, and postoperative therapy. Surgical treatment for recurrence of this condition is incomparably more difficult and risky than the primary operation.
METHODS: At the Innsbruck University Clinic for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 50 patients underwent 70 operations for treatment of recurrence of Dupuytren's contracture between March 1999 and September 2004. Thorough pre- and postoperat

The complex of vascular, neurologic, and osteoarticular disorders occurring in the upper limbs of vibration-exposed workers is called hand-arm vibration syndrome. There is epidemiologic evidence for an increased occurrence of peripheral sensorineural disorders in occupational groups working with vibrating tools. An excess risk for wrist osteoarthrosis and for elbow arthrosis and osteophytosis has been reported in workers exposed to shocks and low-frequency vibration of high magnitude from percussive tools. However, there are too few epidemiology data to enable reliable conclusions to be drawn

PURPOSE: Fingertip injuries are very common and can lead to significant functional impairment or even loss of finger function. Techniques for pulp reconstruction often involve the use of flaps. The Joshi and Pho flap is a single-pedicle island flap. Our purpose was to evaluate the long-term functional and aesthetic outcomes of the Joshi and Pho flap in digital pulp reconstruction from 2010 to 2022 in a University Hospital.
METHODS: An observational retrospective single-center study included 14 patients who underwent Joshi and Pho flap reconstruction for subtotal pulp defects between 2010 and

BACKGROUND: Conventional physiotherapy plays a significant role in treating distal radius fractures (DRF), but pain and functional limitations can persist despite treatment. Therefore, additional interventions are needed to improve treatment efficacy. Motor imagery (MI) has been shown to improve pain, function, range of motion (ROM), and muscle strength in musculoskeletal rehabilitation, though studies on its effect on upper extremity injuries are limited.
PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of MI training applied with the telerehabilitation method on pain, kinesiophobia, and functionality in

The development of conductive hydrogels has garnered significant attention in the field of wearable devices and smart sensors. However, the fabrication of hydrogels that possess both multifunctionality and structural stability remains a challenging task. In this study, a novel hydrogel, PAgHCB, was synthesized using a mild method and exhibited outstanding characteristics such as electrical conductivity, self-healing capability, antimicrobial activity, dimensional stability, and temperature sensitivity. The exceptional mechanical performance (∼120 kPa at a strain of 450%) of PAgHCB is attribute

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum (TP) subspecies pallidum. Syphilis can be transmitted via contact with infected bodily fluids, such as blood or semen, congenital infection, blood transfusion, or organ transplantation. After a brief incubation period, the disease manifests with signs and symptoms such as genital ulcers, erythematous papules on the palms and soles, fever, and lymphadenopathy. The clinical presentation of syphilis is varied, making its diagnosis challenging. Syphilitic ulcers or erosions (hard chancres) may occur in extrage

Idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis (IPH) is a rare interstitial lung disease, usually occurring in children or young adults. Although several studies reported on the coexistence of IPH and immune system diseases, the association between these conditions has not been well described. The present study reports on the case of a 21-year-old female patient who presented with bilateral lung abnormalities. The patient was admitted due to a 2-year history of progressive exertional dyspnea, as well as arthralgia and joint swelling in the recent 2 months. During the past 15 years, the patient had been di

BACKGROUND: Angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma (AITL) is an infrequent hematological malignancy with variable and often atypical presentations. The presence of dysproteinemia, autoantibodies and systemic involvement in AITL has often led to a delay in diagnosis or even misdiagnosis in practice. We herewith present a case of AITL that primarily presented with acute kidney injury associated with type II Cryoglobulinemia, the underlying cause was only identified 8 months after the emergence of initial symptoms.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year old woman presented with 2-month history of intermittent

BACKGROUND: Following the thalidomide disaster (1958-62), Henkel and Willert analysed the pattern of dysmelia in the long bones (J Bone Joint Surg Br. 51:399-414, 1969) and the extremities, Willert and Henkel (Z Orthop Ihre Grenzgeb. 107:663-75, 1970). Willert's material from deformed extremities is re-examined here asking "How does thalidomide reduce the skeleton?"
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the original data collection of Willert and Henkel (Z Orthop Ihre Grenzgeb. 107:663-75, 1970), comprising musculoskeletal histology slides from 30 children affected by thalidomide with radiograph
