Real-time dynamic simulation for highly accurate spatiotemporal brain deformation from impact.

Real-time dynamic simulation remains a significant challenge for spatiotemporal data of high dimension and resolution. In this study, we establish a transformer neural network (TNN) originally developed for natural language processing and a separate convolutional neural network (CNN) to estimate five-dimensional (5D) spatiotemporal brain-skull relative displacement resulting from impact (isotropic spatial resolution of 4 mm with temporal resolution of 1 ms). Sequential training is applied to train (N = 5184 samples) the two neural networks for estimating the complete 5D displacement across a t

Feature engineering with neural networks in Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensing.

Wavefront sensing in conventional Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensors (SHWSs) relies on sequential centroiding and wavefront slope fitting algorithms, which are computationally demanding and whose accuracy is limited by wavefront sampling. In this work, we propose hybrid machine learning (ML) strategies combining feature selection and extraction with artificial neural networks (ANNs) that enhance both the wavefront sensing accuracy and computational efficiency. The ML models proposed for use in a SHWS (8×8 lenslets) are compared against a robust traditional wavefront sensing algorithm. Using a nu

Frequency-Dependent Effects of Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation on Cerebro-Cerebellar Connectivity and Sensorimotor Performance.

The cerebellum is critical for sensorimotor performance, and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a promising modulatory tool. To address the unclear frequency-specific effects of tACS on the cerebro-cerebellar network and sensorimotor performance, this study investigated how low- and high-frequency stimulation differentially modulate effective connectivity and sensorimotor performance. In this single-blind, sham-controlled, within-participant study, we first used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based computational modeling to determine the optimal current intensity for a fi

Neural fingerprints of gambling disorder using diffusion tensor imaging.

Gambling disorder (GD) is a behavioral addiction associated with personal, social and occupational consequences. Thus, examining GD's clinical relationship with its neural substrates is critical. We compared neural fingerprints using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in GD subjects undergoing treatment relative to healthy volunteers (HV). Fifty-three (25 GD, 28 age-matched HV) males were scanned with structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and DTI. We applied probabilistic tractography based on DTI scanning data, preprocessed and analyzed using permutation testing of individual connectivity w

Triangulation of the neurocomputational architecture underpinning reading aloud.

The goal of cognitive neuroscience is to integrate cognitive models with knowledge about underlying neural machinery. This significant challenge was explored in relation to word reading, where sophisticated computational-cognitive models exist but have made limited contact with neural data. Using distortion-corrected functional MRI and dynamic causal modeling, we investigated the interactions between brain regions dedicated to orthographic, semantic, and phonological processing while participants read words aloud. We found that the lateral anterior temporal lobe exhibited increased activation

Altered topology of structural brain networks in patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by tics. Abnormal neuronal circuits in a wide-spread structural and functional network involved in planning, execution and control of motor functions are thought to represent the underlying pathology. We therefore studied changes of structural brain networks in 13 adult GTS patients reconstructed by diffusion tensor imaging and probabilistic tractography. Structural connectivity and network topology were characterized by graph theoretical measures and compared to 13 age-matched controls. In GTS patients, significantl

[An auxiliary diagnosis system for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia based on colposcopic images].

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia is the primary type of cervical precancerous lesion; however, manual clinical diagnosis is prone to bias and has limited grading accuracy. To achieve precise automated grading of CIN, this paper proposes a multimodal fusion Swin Transformer model and develops a corresponding computer-aided diagnosis system. This method employs three-channel fusion of raw images, cervical mask images, and directional gradient histogram features to enhance lesion texture and location information. Within the Swin Transformer backbone, an atrous spatial pyramid pooling module cha

Assessing an Automated Noncontrast CT-based Pipeline for Sacral Tumor Classification Using a Hip Bone Reference Frame.

Purpose To develop a fully automated hybrid approach to predict sacral tumor types from preoperative noncontrast CT (NCCT ) images. Materials and Methods In this retrospective, multicenter study, scans were available in 690 patients who had histopathologically confirmed preoperative sacral NCCT performed between January 2011 and May 2024. A fully automated hybrid model integrated two deep convolutional neural network models (model 1 and model 2) through a fully automated pipeline. Model 1 segments tumors and hip bones automatically from NCCT images, producing masks that are used by model 2. Fo

From sequences to strategies: Early detection of new SARS-CoV-2 variants via genetic distance to reduce hospitalizations.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the critical need for robust methods to monitor viral evolution and detect emerging variants of concern (VOCs). This study expanded an unsupervised clustering algorithm, based on Levenshtein distance, to track and predict variant predominance across six European countries from 2020 to January 2024. We also investigated the influence of genetic distances and containment strategies on hospitalization rates. Spike protein sequences were transformed into temporal chains. A deep neural network (DNN) was trained to classify emerging chains as likely dominant, while

EEG based real time classification of consecutive two eye blinks for brain computer interface applications.

Human eye blinks are considered a significant contaminant or artifact in electroencephalogram (EEG), which impacts EEG-based medical or scientific applications. However, eye blink detection can instead be transformed into a potential application of brain-computer interfaces (BCI). This study introduces a novel real-time EEG-based framework for classifying three blink states: no blink, single blink, and two consecutive blinks in one model. EEG data were collected from ten healthy participants using an 8-channel wearable headset under controlled blinking conditions. The data were preprocessed an

EEG signal analysis for the classification of Alzheimer's and frontotemporal dementia: a novel approach using artificial neural networks and cross-entropy techniques.

Dementia, a neurological disorder, can cause cognitive decline due to damage to the brain. Our study aims to contribute to the development of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems to aid in the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) by examining Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. EEG signals of 36 AD, 23 FTD and 29 healthy control (HC) participants were analyzed and entropy measurement approaches were used to analyze the connectivity between EEG channel pairs. The cross-permutation entropy (CPE) method and the cross conditional entropy (CCE) method were

Cone-Beam CT to CT Image Translation Using a Transformer-Based Deep Learning Model for Prostate Cancer Adaptive Radiotherapy.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is widely utilized in image-guided radiation therapy; however, its image quality is poor compared to planning CT (pCT), thus restricting its utility for adaptive radiotherapy (ART). Our objective was to enhance CBCT image quality utilizing a transformer-based deep learning model, SwinUNETR, which we compared with a conventional convolutional neural network (CNN) model, U-net. This retrospective study involved 260 patients undergoing prostate radiotherapy, with 245 patients used for training and 15 patients reserved as an independent hold-out test dataset. E

Multi-label classification of retinal diseases based on fundus images using Resnet and Transformer.

Retinal disorders are a major cause of irreversible vision loss, which can be mitigated through accurate and early diagnosis. Conventionally, fundus images are used as the gold diagnosis standard in detecting retinal diseases. In recent years, more and more researchers have employed deep learning methods for diagnosing ophthalmic diseases using fundus photography datasets. Among the studies, most of them focus on diagnosing a single disease in fundus images, making it still challenging for the diagnosis of multiple diseases. In this paper, we propose a framework that combines ResNet and Transf

Periapical lesion detection in periapical radiographs using the latest convolutional neural network ConvNeXt and its integrated models.

To overcome the limitation of a single classification model's inability to simultaneously identify multiple lesion targets within periapical radiographs, This study proposes YoCNET (Yolov5 + ConvNeXt), a novel deep learning integrated model. YoCNET leverages the target detection capability of Yolov5 and the image classification capability of ConvNeXt to achieve automatic segmentation of individual teeth and concurrent detection of periapical lesions across multiple teeth. A dataset of 1,305 periapical radiographs was used to train and validate the ConvNeXt and ResNet34 models, with an 8:2 spli

Cognitive deficits linked to intrinsic timescales and gray matter volume abnormalities in children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is associated with cognitive deficits and neural abnormalities, yet how temporal properties of regional brain activity align with structural changes across development remains unclear. We integrated intrinsic neural timescale (INT) with voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to explore whether intrinsic timescales disruptions co-localize with gray matter volume (GMV) alterations and relate to cognition in children with DMD. METHODS: Thirty-six children with DMD and 30 age-matched healthy controls underwent T1-weighted MRI and resting-state fMRI. INT and VBM

Postoperative Cognitive Alterations and Functional Brain Reorganization in Children With Middle Cranial Fossa Arachnoid Cysts: A Pilot fMRI Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Middle fossa arachnoid cysts (MFACs) are congenital benign lesions for which the indication for surgical intervention remains controversial. Although numerous studies have demonstrated that surgery can improve cognitive function in affected children, investigations into the neural mechanisms underlying these improvements are scarce. Our aim was to quantify neurocognitive outcomes and functional brain network alterations before and after microsurgical fenestration of MFAC in children. METHODS: We acquired resting-state functional MRI data from 18 pediatric MFAC patie

Co-evolution of machine learning and digital technologies to improve monitoring of Parkinson's disease motor symptoms.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor impairments such as tremor, bradykinesia, dyskinesia, and gait abnormalities. Current protocols assess PD symptoms during clinic visits and can be subjective. Patient diaries can help clinicians evaluate at-home symptoms, but can be incomplete or inaccurate. Therefore, researchers have developed in-home automated methods to monitor PD symptoms to enable data-driven PD diagnosis and management. We queried the US National Library of Medicine PubMed database to analyze the progression of the technologies and computati

Working Memory Load Strengthens Reward Prediction Errors.

Reinforcement learning (RL) in simple instrumental tasks is usually modeled as a monolithic process in which reward prediction errors (RPEs) are used to update expected values of choice options. This modeling ignores the different contributions of different memory and decision-making systems thought to contribute even to simple learning. In an fMRI experiment, we investigated how working memory (WM) and incremental RL processes interact to guide human learning. WM load was manipulated by varying the number of stimuli to be learned across blocks. Behavioral results and computational modeling co

Use of Artificial Intelligence Model Associated with Masson's Trichrome Staining as a Predictor of Muscle Invasion in Bladder Cancer.

Bladder cancer (BC) is the most common malignancy of the urinary tract. Approximately 75% of cases are non-muscle-invasive BC (NMIBC), while muscle-invasive BC (MIBC) and advanced tumors account for most cancer-specific mortality. Accurate assessment of tumor invasion is essential, as staging variability may lead to inappropriate treatments. Tumor invasion involves several mechanisms including extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling mediated by metalloproteinases, angiogenesis, and cell adhesions. Masson's trichrome staining (MTS) provides relevant information on ECM composition. This study eval
