Attachment styles, social behavior, and personality functioning in romantic relationships.

Personality disorders (PDs) are commonly associated with romantic relationship disturbance. However, research has seldom evaluated who people with high PD severity partner with, and what explains the link between PD severity and romantic relationship disturbance. First, we examined the degree to which people match with partners with similar levels of personality and interpersonal problems. Second, we evaluated whether the relationship between PD severity and romantic relationship satisfaction would be explained by attachment styles and demand/withdraw behavior. Couples selected for high PD sev

Measuring the slot machine zone with attentional dual tasks and respiratory sinus arrhythmia.

Recent accounts of problematic electronic gaming machine (EGM) gambling have suggested attentional pathology among at-risk players. A putative slot machine zone is characterized by an intense immersion during game play, causing a neglect of outside events and competing goals. Prior studies of EGM immersion have relied heavily upon retrospective self-report scales. Here, the authors attempt to identify behavioral and psychophysiological correlates of the immersion experience. In samples of undergraduate students and experienced EGM users from the community, they tested 2 potential behavioral me

HIV-related risk among female migrants working in entertainment venues in China.

China has experienced a surge in internal migration during the past decade, and migrant populations have been identified as a high-risk group for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Young female migrants often find employment in entertainment venues (bars, karaoke parlors, and massage parlors) located in metropolitan cities, and sex work transactions frequently occur in these venues. We examined factors associated with risk for HIV, other STIs, and reproductive health challenges in a cross-sectional study of 358 young female migrants, ages 18-29, working in entertainment venu

Aggression, peer relationships, and depression in Chinese children: a multiwave longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Largely due to methodological problems in existing studies, issues concerning causal directions and confounding factors, such as the stability effect, remain to be clarified in the relations among aggression, peer relationships, and psychological adjustment. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to examine (a) reciprocal direct and indirect effects among aggression, peer relationships, and depression based on a full cross-lagged model with the stability effect controlled, and (b) moderating effects of initial status on the growth of the variables. METHOD: A sample of Chinese

Methamphetamine-using parents: the relationship between parental role strain and depressive symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: The methamphetamine epidemic in the United States involves a large number of men and women with dependent-age children. However, we know little about the parenting strains experienced by methamphetamine-using mothers and fathers and the relationship of these parenting strains to mental health outcomes, specifically depressive symptoms. METHOD: The primary goal of this study was to examine five dimensions of parental role strain in relation to depressive symptoms in a sample of 180 methamphetamine-using parents of dependent-age children in San Diego, CA. Dimensions of parental role

Prenatal smoking and early childhood conduct problems: testing genetic and environmental explanations of the association.

BACKGROUND: Extensive evidence now supports a statistical association between prenatal smoking and increased risk for antisocial outcomes in offspring. Though this statistical link may signal a causal association, commentators have urged caution in interpreting findings because of the likelihood of confounding. METHODS: We used data from the Environmental Risk Longitudinal Twin Study, a representative British sample of 1116 twin pairs studied at ages 5 and 7 years, to assess associations between prenatal smoking and early childhood conduct problems net of the effects of both heritable and env

Retinoic acid exposure on gestational days 11 to 13 impairs swallowing in rat offspring.

We have previously reported that exposure to 10 mg/kg of all-trans-retinoic acid (RA) daily on the 11th, 12th, and 13th days of rat gestation is lethal to all fetuses so exposed, due to an inability to suckle [R.R. Holson et al., Neurotoxicol Teratol 19 (1997) 347-353]. Because this lethal RA effect could be due to any of a variety of causes, from olfactory problems in locating the nipple to a motor problem in sucking or swallowing, we performed the following experiment. Albino dams were exposed to 10-mg/kg RA or vehicle daily over gestational days (GDs) 11 to 13. On the afternoon of GD 21 all

Automated home-cage for the evaluation of innate non-reflexive pain behaviors in a mouse model of inflammatory pain.

The failure to develop analgesic drugs is attributed not only to the complex and diverse pathophysiology of pain in humans but also to the poor experimental design and poor preclinical assessment of pain. Although considerable efforts have been devoted to overcoming the relevant problems, many features of the behavioral pain assessment remain to be characterized. For example, a decreased locomotor activity as a common presentation of pain-like behavior has yet to be described. Studies on mice experimentally induced with carrageenan have provided opportunities to explore pain-related behaviors

Efficacy of individualized social competence training for children with oppositional defiant disorders/conduct disorders: a randomized controlled trial with an active control group.

Patient-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy in children with aggressive behavior, which uses group-based social skills training, has resulted in significant reductions in behavioral problems, with effect sizes in the small-to-medium range. However, effects of individually delivered treatments and effects on aggressive behavior and comorbid conditions rated from different perspectives, child functional impairment, child quality of life, parent-child relationship, and parental psychopathology have rarely been assessed. In a randomized controlled trial, 91 boys aged 6-12 years with a diagnosis o

Differential effects of neonatal SSRI treatments on hypoxia-induced behavioral changes in male and female offspring.

Prenatal hypoxia induced by transient intrauterine ischemia is a serious clinical problem, and at present, effective treatments are lacking. Currently, it is unknown how prenatal hypoxia affects behaviors in adulthood. Therefore, we developed a mouse model that mimics prenatal hypoxia in humans using uterine artery occlusion in late gestation. We examined whether prenatal hypoxia induces behavioral changes in adult male and female offspring by conducting a series of behavioral tests. In adulthood, longer immobility was observed in the forced swim test in males, whereas females showed decreased

Animal models of female sexual dysfunction: basic considerations on drugs, arousal, motivation and behavior.

Female sexual dysfunctions are a heterogeneous group of symptoms with unknown but probably varying etiology. Social factors may contribute both to the prevalence and to the origin of these dysfunctions. The present review focuses on female hypoactive sexual desire disorder, sexual arousal disorder and orgasmic disorder. These disorders are generally the most common, according to epidemiological studies, and they can all be considered as disorders of motivation. An incentive motivational model of sexual behavior, applicable to humans as well as to non-human animals, is described and the dysfunc

Pharmacological and behavioral treatments for aggressive psychiatric inpatients.

OBJECTIVE: Because aggressive behaviors of psychiatric patients may be caused by environmental or biological factors, treatment plans that incorporate medication and behavior therapies are the most effective. The authors review research on pharmacological and behavioral treatments for aggressive patients and present a decision tree for use on behavioral units to direct treatment of such patients. METHODS: The empirical literature was searched for studies of pharmacological and behavioral interventions that have been shown to have some value for treating this problem. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS:

Influence of Demographic and Psychological Factors on Attitudes Toward Sport Betting Among Young Adults in Southwest Nigeria.

Prediction and wager on the outcome of games/matches are known as sports betting. Positive attitudes toward sports betting may, in the long run, predict sports betting behavior and gambling-related problems. This study, therefore, examined the influence of gender, age, sports betting knowledge and peer-based gambling on attitudes toward sports betting among young adults in Nigeria. The ex-post facto design was adopted in this cross-sectional survey. The participants were 749 students (42.9% females) of a large tertiary institution in southwest Nigeria. Early behavioral and developmental interventions in ADNP-syndrome: A case report of SWI/SNF-related neurodevelopmental syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects approximately one in 59 children. Variants in the activity-dependent neuroprotector homeobox ADNP (OMIM #611386) gene may be one of the most common single-gene causes of syndromic ASD. Most patients diagnosed with ADNP syndrome have ASD as a comorbidity, and all patients have mild-to-severe intellectual disability. METHODS/CASE REPORT: We present a case report of a patient diagnosed with ADNP syndrome at 2.5 years of age. The patient has many of the key features of the syndrome, including ASD, global developmental delay, behavioral problems,

Traits related to bipolar disorder are associated with an increased post-illumination pupil response.

Mood states in bipolar disorder appear to be closely linked to changes in sleep and circadian function. It has been suggested that hypersensitivity of the circadian system to light may be a trait vulnerability for bipolar disorder. Healthy persons with emotional-behavioural traits associated with bipolar disorder also appear to exhibit problems with circadian rhythms, which may be associated with individual differences in light sensitivity. This study investigated the melanopsin-driven post-illumination pupil response (PIPR) in relation to emotional-behavioural traits associated with bipolar d

Trajectories of dementia-related cognitive decline in a large mental health records derived patient cohort.

BACKGROUND: Modeling trajectories of decline can help describe the variability in progression of cognitive impairment in dementia. Better characterisation of these trajectories has significant implications for understanding disease progression, trial design and care planning. METHODS: Patients with at least three Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE) scores recorded in the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust Electronic Health Records, UK were selected (N = 3441) to form a retrospective cohort. Trajectories of cognitive decline were identified through latent class growth analysis of

A de novo mutation in the X-linked PAK3 gene is the underlying cause of intellectual disability and macrocephaly in monozygotic twins.

Pathogenic variants in theP21 protein (Cdc42/Rac)-activated kinase 3gene (PAK3) lead to a rare non syndromic X-linked intellectual disability. The protein encoded by this gene forms an activated complex with GTP-bound RAS-like (P21), CDC2 and RAC1 proteins which then mediates a variety of cellular processes. So far, mutations in PAK3 gene have been reported in few families affected with intellectual disability associated with neurological manifestations such as speech defect, behavioral problem, brain structural abnormalities, microcephaly and cerebral palsy. In this study whole exome sequenci

Japanese encephalitis can trigger anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is usually a monophasic disease; however, in rare cases, patients with JE may have an early relapse after a partial recovery, giving rise to a biphasic pattern for the disease. In this study, we report three pediatric cases in which post-JE relapse was characterized by movement disorder and/or behavioral problems, and was related to anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) immunoglobulin G (IgG). Serum and cerebrospinal fluid were examined for anti-NMDAR IgG in three patients who had confirmed JE and then developed relapsing symptoms which were similar to those of
