INTRODUCTION: Staging of the mediastinum lymph nodes involvement in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is an important prognostic factor determining the most appropriate multimodality treatment plan. The objective of this study is to assess ultrasound characteristics of mediastinal lymph nodes metastasis and effectiveness of intraoperative ultrasound-guided mediastinal nodal dissection in patients with resected NSCLC.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery lobectomy and pulmonary lymphadenectomy from November 2020 to March 2022 at the

INTRODUCTION: Gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) is a group of malignant neoplasms that arise from abnormal proliferation of trophoblastic tissue. The metastatic spread rate is depended on the histopathological type, with pulmonary metastases being the most common (80%) in patients with metastases. Pneumothorax as a primary manifestation is extremely rare. We hereby discuss a unique case of spontaneous hemi-pneumothorax due to metastatic GTN in a 30-weeks pregnant woman.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old woman - G2 P0 A1 - was admitted to our maternal intensive care department with atyp

Primary pulmonary mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT)-derived lymphoma is a low-grade B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It is rare with unclear clinical and imaging findings, requiring biopsy or surgery for diagnosis. Here, we provide a new case to learn the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of primary pulmonary MALT lymphoma. The patient was a 51-year-old male. During the annual physical examination in 2019, a shadow in the lower lobe of the right lung was accidentally found in his chest computed tomography image. In 2020, the size and density of the shadows increased, which was suspected t

BACKGROUND: Multiple exostoses generally develop in the first decade of life. They most frequently arise from the distal femur, proximal tibia, fibula, and proximal humerus. Costal exostoses are rare, contributing to 1%-2% of all exostoses in hereditary multiple exostoses (HME). They are usually asymptomatic, but a few cases have resulted in severe thoracic injuries. Pneumothorax caused by costal exostoses is rare, with only 13 previously reported cases. We report a new case of pneumothorax caused by costal exostoses.
CASE SUMMARY: A 17-year-old male with HME underwent surgery for removal of

BACKGROUND: Serratus anterior plane block (SAPB) and intercostal nerve block (ICNB) are attractive options for multimodal analgesia in patients undergoing thoracoscopic surgery, but which block is superior remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to assess the effect of SAPB versus ICNB on reducing postoperative pain after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for lobectomy.
METHODS: This prospective, randomized, active-intervention-controlled, subject-assessor-blinded, single-center, parallel-group trial allocated 18- to 80-year-old patients with American Society of Anesthe

BACKGROUND/AIM: Sugammadex, which offsets the effects of neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBs), has advantages over traditional reversal agents like pyridostigmine, as it enables fast and reliable recovery from neuromuscular blockade. This study compared the incidence of early postoperative chest radiographic abnormalities (CRA) between sugammadex (group S) and pyridostigmine (group P) following video-assisted thoracoscopic (VAT) lobectomy for lung cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort analysis by reviewing the medical records of patients who underwent VAT lobectom

BACKGROUND: Uniportal video-assisted thoracic surgery (UVATS) technique has been increasingly used for many thoracic diseases. Whether UVATS has equivalent or better perioperative outcomes for pulmonary sequestration (PS) patients remains controversial. Our study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of UVATS in anatomical lung resection for pulmonary sequestration.
METHODS: A total of 24 patients with PS including fifteen males and nine females with the mean age of 40 (range, 18-65) years old, who had received completely UVATS anatomical lung resection for PS in Nanjing Chest Hospital between Ja

A 70-year-old male patient with chest pain and high fever was diagnosed as lung squamous carcinoma T4N0M0 in the left upper lobe complicated with intratumoral lung abscess. With no improvement resulted from antibiotic treatment for 4 days, to control his infection and resect his large tumor, he received video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) left upper lung lobe resection and broncho-and angioplasty. Two-port technique was employed and the utility port was 10 cm long because the tumor's diameter (max) was 12 cm. After the first step to divide the tumor from chest wall and mediastinum, the

BACKGROUND: Surgical resection is the only curative treatment for hilar cholangiocarcinoma. Laparoscopic hepatectomy has been used to treat several types of liver neoplasms. However, technical issues have limited the adoption of laparoscopy for the treatment of hilar cholangiocarcinoma. To date there is only one report of minimally invasive procedure for hilar cholangiocarcinoma in the literature. The present video-assisted procedure shows a laparoscopic resection of hilar cholangiocarcinoma.

We herein report an extremely rare case of a patient chylothorax at an interval of 20 years after thoracic vertebrae fractures, who underwent a successful thoracoscopic thoracic duct ligation and pleurodesis. A 51-year-old man was referred to our hospital with shortness of breath on effort about 1 month after participating in archery. Twenty years previously, he was involved in a traffic accident. At that time, the patient sustained trauma to the spine and suffered a spinal injury, thus resulting in paralysis in the lower part of his body. A chest roentgenogram and computed tomogram revealed a

Primary pulmonary malignant lymphoma is a rare disease that is thought to belong to a category of malignant lymphomas arising from mucosa- or bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT or BALT). We encountered 3 cases of primary pulmonary malignant lymphoma, Case 1: In a 51-year-old male, an abnormal shadow was detected in chest radiography in the right S9 after an operation for thyroid carcinoma. A right lower lobectomy was performed. The diagnosis was malignant lymphoma (marginal zone B-cell lymphoma). Immunohistochemical staining for IgM gave a positive result. Case 2: Multiple nodular shado

BACKGROUND: The resection of pulmonary segmental tissue involving isolation and transection of only the target segmental artery without individual dissection of the segmental bronchus is defined as an incomplete anatomic segmentectomy (IAS). Few studies have compared postoperative symptoms between complete anatomical segmentectomy (CAS) and IAS. This study aims to evaluate symptom burden after these two surgical approaches.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed prospective data from patients with stage IA1-IA2 NSCLC (predominantly ground-glass opacity) undergoing segmentectomy (2021-2023). Patien
