Novel Genetic Variants Associated with Lumbar Spondylosis in Koreans : A Genome-Wide Association Study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify the susceptibility genes responsible for lumbar spondylosis (LS) in Korean patients. METHODS: Data from 1427 subjects were made available for radiographic grading and genome wide association studies (GWAS) analysis. Lateral lumbar spine radiographs were obtained and the various degrees of degenerative change were semi-quantitatively scored. A pilot GWAS was performed using the AffymetrixGenome-Wide Human single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), 500K array. A total of 352228 SNPs were analyzed and the association between the SNPs and case-control

A robot hand testbed designed for enhancing embodiment and functional neurorehabilitation of body schema in subjects with upper limb impairment or loss.

Many upper limb amputees experience an incessant, post-amputation "phantom limb pain" and report that their missing limbs feel paralyzed in an uncomfortable posture. One hypothesis is that efferent commands no longer generate expected afferent signals, such as proprioceptive feedback from changes in limb configuration, and that the mismatch of motor commands and visual feedback is interpreted as pain. Non-invasive therapeutic techniques for treating phantom limb pain, such as mirror visual feedback (MVF), rely on visualizations of postural changes. Advances in neural interfaces for artificial

Comparison of the effectiveness of active and passive neuromuscular electrical stimulation of hemiplegic upper extremities: a randomized, controlled trial.

To compare the efficacy of electromyography (EMG)-triggered (active) neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and passive NMES in enhancing the upper extremity (UE) motor and functional recovery of subacute and chronic stage stroke patients. Thirty-one hemiplegic patients were randomly assigned to active NMES (n=11), passive NMES (n=10), and control (sham stimulation) (n=10) groups. Each treatment regimen was applied five times per week for 45 min for 3 weeks. All of the patients performed the same neurophysiologic exercise program for 45 min five times per week for 3 weeks. Patients were a

Prevalence of hand disorders in type 2 diabetes mellitus and its correlation with microvascular complications.

BACKGROUND: Physicians have long recognized the association between diabetes mellitus and several pathologic conditions of the hand. The most commonly recognized maladies are limited joint mobility (LJM), Dupuytren's disease (DD), trigger finger (TF), and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Incidence of these hand disorders has increased in the setting of diabetes. Collectively, these are described as diabetic hand syndrome. AIM: The aims were to find out the prevalence of hand disorders in diabetic patients, and to study the relation of these hand disorders with microvascular complications. SUBJE

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma: a clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular analysis of 18 cases.

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (EMCS) is an uncommon clinicopathologically well-defined tumor, but its pathogenesis and biologic behavior are poorly understood. We reviewed 18 cases of EMCS to verify clinicopathologic features and immunohistochemical profiles together with molecular detection of the tumor-specific fusion genes. The tumors were located mainly in the proximal extremities and limb girdles (72%). Two tumors arose at unusual anatomic sites: the finger and the hip joint. Nine of the 17 followed-up patients were alive and disease free, 4 were alive with recurrences and/or metast

Not all non-rheumatoid patients are satisfied with thumb metacarpophalangeal joint arthrodesis.

Arthrodesis of the thumb metacarpophalangeal (MP) joint exhibits good results in rheumatoid patients but is controversial in post-traumatic conditions. This study evaluated the subjective outcome after thumb MP joint arthrodesis in chronic injuries and non-rheumatoid degenerative disorders. Forty-six patients were evaluated retrospectively with a mean follow-up of 4.1 years (range 1.5-6.5). Maid abuse.

Domestic maid violence is an assault and coercive behaviour, which mainly includes physical, psychological and at times sexual too, by employer or household members of employer against a person hired as a domestic help. Maid abuse is well known but poorly documented in scientific literature. This is an important global issue. In this article, two illustrated cases of maid abuse are discussed. Their employers allegedly subjected both the victims to physical and psychological trauma. The physical examination of the victims showed poor state of clothing, nutrition, and presence of injuries of dif

[The "Shoulder, Arms and Hand Disability Questionnaire" as a scale for identification of the diagnosis-specific activity profile].

Functional disabilities of the upper extremities have a considerable social and economic impact so that interest was aroused in developing a valid and reliable instrument suitable for international use. The Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire is a self-report measure recording functional limitations in the upper extremity. A German version is now available in German-speaking countries. Previous studies have been concerned with the evaluation of DASH scores. Based on the data of four diagnostic groups, this study explores DASH's ability to identify diagnosis-specific limit

Patterns of hand fractures and dislocations in a district general hospital.

In a retrospective survey of patients with fractures and dislocations attending the Accident department of a District General hospital, comparison was made between patients with fractures and dislocations in the hand and fractures and dislocations of other sites. Patients with hand injuries accounted for 28% of the total patients seen. They were more likely than other fracture patients to be male and between the ages of 10 and 40 years. Almost a quarter of hand injuries attended on Monday. Leisure activities outside the home formed the commonest aetiological factor. Only 66% of patients with h
