BACKGROUND: In 2019, a dengue outbreak involving Aedes albopictus occurred in a rural area of Espírito Santo, Brazil, motivating our study in Sooretama and Linhares.
METHODS: We set traps to sample immature mosquito larvae at 40 sites, with weekly inspections from July 2022 to January 2023. Adult specimens were collected monthly at 19 sites, each collection lasting 15 min. The collections were performed during daylight using a Castro vacuum device, a small electric vacuum suction device, a net capture device and insect cages. We conducted molecular analyses of adult Aedes to identify arboviru

The associations between respiratory and cardiovascular health outcomes with air quality have been well examined. Less conclusive are the studies assessing the relationship between air quality and dengue, a mosquito-borne illness which continues to pose risk to more than half the world's population. We examined this relationship in Singapore, a tropical city-state located in the South-East Asian region where the burden of dengue is among the highest across the globe. We analyzed the short-term associations between all laboratory-confirmed dengue reports and variations in PM2.5, PM10, CO, O3, N

Chikungunya fever (CF) is a mosquito-borne viral disease caused by Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) that is being increasingly reported in previously non-endemic areas, including Guangdong, China. Despite the low mortality rate associated with CF, some patients may develop chronic joint pain that persists for months or years. Moreover, due to the similarities in symptomatology between CHIKV and other arboviruses, clinical diagnosis without laboratory confirmation is inaccurate. The CHIKV envelope protein E1, critical for viral entry and assembly, is a promising diagnostic and therapeutic target. In t

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a mosquito-borne phlebovirus that causes severe febrile and hemorrhagic illness in humans. In September 2025, an outbreak in northern Senegal led to 119 confirmed infections and 15 deaths as of October 7, 2025. We performed rapid genomic sequencing to characterize the virus responsible for this epidemic. RNA from RT-qPCR-confirmed samples was sequenced using the Twist Comprehensive Viral Research Panel on an Illumina iSeq 100 platform. Consensus genomes were analyzed with and compared with all complete RVFV genomes in GenBank. Nine genomes were recovered, incl

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a mosquito-borne infectious disease that is primarily endemic in Asia and the Western Pacific region. In recent years, the epidemiological profile of JE in China has undergone significant transformations, posing novel challenges to disease control and prevention. To systematically evaluate these changes, we analyzed nationwide longitudinal surveillance data on JE incidence from 2004 to 2020. Bayesian spatiotemporal hierarchy model and age-period-cohort analysis were employed to explore long-term trends and transmission dynamics, and the geographical detector model

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-transmitted flavivirus that caused an epidemic in 2015-2016 in the Americas and raised serious global health concerns due to its association with congenital brain developmental defects in infected pregnancies. Upon infection, ZIKV assembles virus particles in a virus-generated toroidal compartment next to the nucleus called the replication factory, or viroplasm, which forms by remodeling the host cell endoplasmic reticulum (ER). How the viral proteins control viroplasm assembly remains unknown. Here we show that the ZIKV non-structural protein 3 (NS3) is suffici

Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection caused by the dengue virus (DENV), is a global health challenge. Annually, approximately 400 million cases are reported worldwide, signaling a persistent upward trend from previous years and projected a manifold increase in the future. There is a growing need for innovative and integrated approaches aimed at effective disease management. In this regard, scientific efforts are underway to find a new antiviral inhibitor that is desperately needed due to the growing prevalence of dengue, along with inadequate vector control and few vaccinations. Dirofilaria repens is a zoonotic mosquito-borne filarioid that parasitizes in the subcutaneous tissues of carnivores, that has been incriminated in the great majority of human dirofilariasis cases reported throughout the Old World. From the Republic of Uzbekistan, recent data showed that this parasite is endemic in domestic and wild carnivores. In contrast, information regarding human infection is scarce and mostly outdated, with a single case report being published during the last decades. The present paper reports a case of recurrent autochthonous infection with D. repens in a patient living

Despite ongoing control efforts, the mosquito population and diseases vectored by them continue to thrive worldwide, causing major health concerns. There has been growing interest in the use of botanicals as alternatives to insecticides due to their widespread insecticidal properties, biodegradability, and adaptability to ecological conditions. In this study, we investigated the larvicidal activity and cytotoxicity effects of solvent extracts from three aromatic plants-Curcuma longa (turmeric), Ocimum americanum (hoary basil), and Petroselinum crispum (parsley)-against Aedes albopictus. Malaria long-term elimination depends on parasite transmission control. Plasmodium sexual stage maturation in the mosquito, including egress from the host erythrocyte, is one of the prime targets for transmission-blocking interventions. This work aims to identify candidate molecules potentially involved in gamete emergence from the host erythrocyte, as novel transmission blocking targets. We analyzed by quantitative mass spectrometry the proteins released/secreted by purified Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes upon induction of gametogenesis. The proteome obtained showed a good overlap (74%) wi

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a significant parasitic infection, and human infection is mediated by mosquito (Anopheles) biting and subsequent transmission of protozoa (Plasmodium) to the blood. Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are known to be highly expressed in the midgut and ectoperitrophic space of Anopheles gambiae. Transmembrane CAs (tmCAs) in Plasmodium may be potential vaccine candidates for the control and prevention of malaria.
METHODS: In this study, two groups of transmembrane CAs, including α-CAs and one group of η-CAs were analysed by immunoinformatics and computational biology methods, such

Advancements in the field of proteomics have provided opportunities to develop diagnostic and therapeutic strategies against various diseases. About half of the world's population remains at risk of malaria. Caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium, malaria is one of the oldest and largest risk factors responsible for the global burden of infectious diseases with an estimated 3.2 billion persons at risk of infection. For epidemiological surveillance and appropriate treatment of individuals infected with Plasmodium spp., timely detection is critical. In this study, we used combinat

Essential oils are promising as environmentally friendly and safe sources of pesticides for human use. Furthermore, they are also of interest as aromatherapeutic agents in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, and inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) has been evaluated as an important mechanism. The essential oils of some species in the genera Callicarpa, Premna, Vitex and Karomia of the family Lamiaceae were evaluated for inhibition of electric eel AChE using the Ellman method. The essential oils of Callicarpa candicans showed promising activity, with IC50 values between 45.67

BACKGROUND: Dengue virus (DENV) and Zika virus (ZIKV) have a severe impact on human health worldwide. To understand the dynamics of these viruses in mosquito populations, it is necessary to maintain surveillance during non-epidemic years.
METHODS: We aimed to assess the presence of DENV and ZIKV in Aedes aegypti females in the state of Sergipe, northeastern Brazil, during a non-epidemic year. The Ae. aegypti females collected were sectioned, and the heads and thorax were used to analyze the infection rate. Each female was first analyzed to detect Flavivirus using RT-PCR. We sought to summarize knowledge, misconceptions, beliefs, and practices about Ebola that might impede the control of Ebola outbreaks in Africa. We searched Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Google Scholar (through May 2019) for publications reporting on knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to Ebola in Africa. In total, 14 of 433 articles were included. Knowledge was evaluated in all 14 articles, and they all highlighted that there are misconceptions and risk behaviors during an Ebola outbreak. Some communities believed that Ebola spreads through the air, mosquito bites, malice from fo

Chiffon is the sole Drosophila ortholog of Dbf4, the regulatory subunit for the cell-cycle kinase Cdc7 that initiates DNA replication. In Drosophila, the chiffon gene encodes two polypeptides with independent activities. Chiffon-A contains the conserved Dbf4 motifs and interacts with Cdc7 to form the Dbf4-dependent Kinase (DDK) complex, which is essential for a specialized form of DNA replication. In contrast, Chiffon-B binds the histone acetyltransferase Gcn5 to form the Chiffon histone acetyltransferase (CHAT) complex, which is necessary for histone H3 acetylation and viability. Previous stu

Across the Pacific, and including in the Solomon Islands, outbreaks of arboviruses such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika are increasing in frequency, scale and impact. Outbreaks of mosquito-borne disease have the potential to overwhelm the health systems of small island nations. This study mapped the seroprevalence of dengue, Zika, chikungunya and Ross River viruses in 5 study sites in the Solomon Islands. Serum samples from 1,021 participants were analysed by ELISA. Overall, 56% of participants were flavivirus-seropositive for dengue (28%), Zika (1%) or both flaviviruses (27%); and 53% of par

Crisis preparedness training programmes are substantial for the effective management of contingency plans. Rift Valley Fever (RVF) was chosen as the vector transmitted zoonosis for a crisis preparedness exercise co-organised in 2021 by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell'Abruzzo e del Molise "G. Caporale" (IZS-Teramo). The online table-top simulation exercise was planned to strengthen the network of Mediterranean countries on rapid risk assessment, risk/crisis management and risk communication during a human/animal health crisis, adoptin

Embryo microinjection techniques are essential for many molecular and genetic studies of insect species. They provide a means to introduce exogenous DNA fragments encoding genes of interest as well as favorable traits into the insect germline in a stable and heritable manner. The resulting transgenic strains can be studied for phenotypic changes resulting from the expression of the integrated DNA to answer basic questions or used in practical applications. Although the technology is straightforward, it requires of the investigator patience and practice to achieve a level of skill that maximize

Host blood protein digestion plays a pivotal role in the ontogeny and reproduction of hematophagous vectors. The gut of hematophagous arthropods stores and slowly digests host blood and represents the primary gateway for transmitted pathogens. The initial step in blood degradation is induced lysis of host red blood cells (hemolysis), which releases hemoglobin for subsequent processing by digestive proteolytic enzymes. The activity cycles and characteristics of hemolysis in vectors are poorly understood. Hence, we investigated hemolysis in two evolutionarily distant blood-feeding arthropods: Th
