Evolving capabilities of computed tomography imaging for transcatheter valvular heart interventions - new opportunities for precision medicine.

The last decade has witnessed a substantial growth in percutaneous treatment options for heart valve disease. The development in these innovative therapies has been mirrored by advances in multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT). MDCT plays a central role in obtaining detailed pre-procedural anatomical information, helping to inform clinical decisions surrounding procedural planning, improve clinical outcomes and prevent potential complications. Improvements in MDCT image acquisition and processing techniques have led to increased application of advanced analytics in routine clinical care. W

Development and implementation of a scalable and versatile test for COVID-19 diagnostics in rural communities.

Rapid and widespread testing of severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is essential for an effective public health response aimed at containing and mitigating the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Successful health policy implementation relies on early identification of infected individuals and extensive contact tracing. However, rural communities, where resources for testing are sparse or simply absent, face distinctive challenges to achieving this success. Accordingly, we report the development of an academic, public land grant University laboratory-based detection a

Functional reconstruction of injured corpus cavernosa using 3D-printed hydrogel scaffolds seeded with HIF-1α-expressing stem cells.

Injury of corpus cavernosa results in erectile dysfunction, but its treatment has been very difficult. Here we construct heparin-coated 3D-printed hydrogel scaffolds seeded with hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α)-mutated muscle-derived stem cells (MDSCs) to develop bioengineered vascularized corpora. HIF-1α-mutated MDSCs significantly secrete various angiogenic factors in MDSCs regardless of hypoxia or normoxia. The biodegradable scaffolds, along with MDSCs, are implanted into corpus cavernosa defects in a rabbit model to show good histocompatibility with no immunological rejection, support

Cryogenic 3D printing of porous scaffolds for in situ delivery of 2D black phosphorus nanosheets, doxorubicin hydrochloride and osteogenic peptide for treating tumor resection-induced bone defects.

Tumor resection is widely used to prevent tumor growth. However, the defected tissue at the original tumor site also causes tissue or organ dysfunction which lowers the patient's life quality. Therefore, regenerating the tissue and preventing tumor recurrence are highly important. Herein, according to the concept of 'first kill and then regenerate', a versatile scaffold-based tissue engineering strategy based on cryogenic 3D printing of water-in-oil polyester emulsion inks, containing multiple functional agents, was developed, in order to realize the elimination of tumor cells with recurrence

A mobile-phone based high-resolution microendoscope to image cervical precancer.

Nearly 90% of cervical cancer cases and deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries that lack comprehensive national HPV immunization and cervical cancer screening programs. In these settings, it is difficult to implement screening programs due to a lack of infrastructure and shortage of trained personnel. Screening programs based on visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) have been successfully implemented in some low-resource settings. However, VIA has poor specificity and up to 90% of patients receiving treatment based on a positive VIA exam are over-treated. A number of studies have

3D-bioprinting a genetically inspired cartilage scaffold with GDF5-conjugated BMSC-laden hydrogel and polymer for cartilage repair.

Rationale: Articular cartilage injury is extremely common in congenital joint dysplasia patients. Genetic studies have identified Growth differentiation factor 5 (GDF5) as a shared gene in joint dysplasia and OA progression across different populations. However, few studies have employed GDF5 in biological regeneration for articular cartilage repair. Methods & Results: In the present study, we report identified genetic association between GDF5 loci and hip joint dysplasia with genome-wide association study (GWAS). GWAS and replication studies in separate populations achieved significant signal

An integrated multi-layer 3D-fabrication of PDA/RGD coated graphene loaded PCL nanoscaffold for peripheral nerve restoration.

As a conductive nanomaterial, graphene has huge potentials in nerve function restoration by promoting electrical signal transduction and metabolic activities with unique topological properties. Polydopamine (PDA) and arginylglycylaspartic acid (RGD) can improve cell adhesion in tissue engineering. Here we report an integrated 3D printing and layer-by-layer casting (LBLC) method in multi-layered porous scaffold fabrication. The scaffold is composed of single-layered graphene (SG) or multi-layered graphene (MG) and polycaprolactone (PCL). The electrically conductive 3D graphene scaffold can sign

Off-label use of duct occluder in transcatheter closure of secundum atrial septal defect with no rim to right pulmonary vein.

OBJECTIVE: Transcatheter closure is usually contraindicated in secundum atrial septal defect with no rim to right pulmonary vein. The morphology of an atrial septal defect is special in these patients, and the off-label use of a duct occluder might make transcatheter closure possible with the assistance of a personalized heart model. However, the related data are absent. This study was performed to investigate the off-label use of a duct occluder in the transcatheter closure of an atrial septal defect with no right pulmonary vein rim. METHODS: Seven consecutive patients with an atrial septal

Porous composite scaffold incorporating osteogenic phytomolecule icariin for promoting skeletal regeneration in challenging osteonecrotic bone in rabbits.

Steroid-associated osteonecrosis (SAON) often requires surgical core decompression (CD) in the early stage for removal of necrotic bone to facilitate repair where bone grafts are needed for filling bone defect and avoiding subsequent joint collapse. In this study, we developed a bioactive composite scaffold incorporated with icariin, a unique phytomolecule that can provide structural and mechanical support and facilitate bone regeneration to fill into bone defects after surgical CD in established SAON rabbit model. An innovative low-temperature 3D printing technology was used to fabricate the

Design, microfabrication, and characterization of a moulded PDMS/SU-8 inkjet dispenser for a Lab-on-a-Printer platform technology with disposable microfluidic chip.

In this paper, we present a disposable inkjet dispenser platform technology and demonstrate the Lab-on-a-Printer concept, an extension of the ubiquitous Lab-on-a-Chip concept, whereby microfluidic modules are directly integrated into the printhead. The concept is demonstrated here through the integration of an inkjet dispenser and a microfluidic mixer enabling control over droplet composition from a single nozzle in real-time during printing. The inkjet dispenser is based on a modular design platform that enables the low-cost microfluidic component and the more expensive actuation unit to be e

Patient-Specific Orbital Implants: Development and Implementation of Technology for More Accurate Orbital Reconstruction.

Fracture of the orbital floor is commonly seen in facial trauma. Accurate anatomical reconstruction of the orbital floor contour is challenging. The authors demonstrate a novel method to more precisely reconstruct the orbital floor on a 50-year-old female who sustained an orbital floor fracture following a fall. Results of the reconstruction show excellent reapproximation of the native orbital floor contour and complete resolution of her enopthalmos and facial asymmetry.

Should the Pelvic Ring Be Closed After Tumor Resection? A Systematic Review.

Background: Primary malignant bone tumors of the pelvis account for 10-15% of all primary bone sarcomas, most commonly chondrosarcoma, osteosarcoma, and Ewing's sarcoma. Although advances have shifted treatment toward internal hemipelvectomy, pelvic resections remain challenging due to the complex anatomy. The need for pelvic reconstruction is controversial, balancing potential stability against higher complication rates. This review evaluates the role of pelvic ring reconstruction, focusing on techniques, outcomes, and complications. Methods: A systematic literature review was performed in Ju
