Research shows that young men who have sex with men (YMSM) engage in higher rates of health risk behaviors and experience higher rates of negative health outcomes than their peers. The purpose of this study is to determine if the effects of adversity on HIV risk are mediated by syndemics (co-occurring health problems). Participants were 470 ethnically diverse YMSM ages 18 to 24 recruited between 2005 and 2006 and surveyed every 6 months for 24 months. Regression analyses examined the impact of adversity on syndemics (emotional distress, substance use, and problematic alcohol use) and the effec

This publication, by reviewing 1300 studies published on autism in 2008, represents an update on this topic. Results include possible parental influences, maternal conditions, and studies on genes and chromosomes. Possible etiological factors involve the "extreme male brain," defects in the mirror neuron system, vaccines, underconnectivity, disorders of central coherence, and many other more specific etiologies. Assessments or tests for autism are also reviewed. Characteristics of autistic individuals include repetitive behavior, language disorders, sleep disturbances, social problems, joint a

Hostility towards relationships is one prominent characteristic symptom for disorders of sexual preference (ICD-10) and paraphilias (DSM-IV). Paraphilic symptoms sometimes progress to obsessive or addictive- like forms leading to a loss of self-control but can occur also as single incidents or as episodic events. Besides constitutional aspects, problems in the development of close relationships to primary caregivers (attachment) play an important role in the development of these disorders. Actual relationship- and self-confidence problems often trigger the severity of disturbance, especially i

Aberrant eating patterns in the eating disorders have been observed across various laboratory-based and clinical studies. It is now clear that problems in experiencing and expressing hunger, appetite, and satiety in anorexia and bulimia nervosa are likely to perpetuate the disorders once established. Whether problems in appetite regulation are primary or secondary to the development of the disorders is unknown. In studies examining indices of appetite regulation after treatment, there still remain significant levels of eating abnormality. This suggests that the main goals of treatment, includi

The traditional role of the pediatrician, which consisted primarily of making diagnoses and prescribing treatments for specific disease entities in children, has expanded dramatically to include psychosocial aspects of health care as well as problems that are primarily psychological, emotional, or social in nature and that extend in various ways to the family and to the child's environment. One of these problems has been identified as the manner in which witnessing domestic violence, a significant and relatively commonplace event for many children today, affects child development and behavior.

This study examines the overall and relative contributions of a variety of family environment measures to a child's alcohol, marijuana and other drug use, delinquent activity, and dysfunctional methods of coping with problems. The family environment variables tapped aspects of parental behaviors and attitudes, parenting styles, and family harmony and cohesion. Data were collected as part of a prospective, longitudinal study that examined the acquisition and maintenance of a variety of behaviors. Data were gleaned at two points in time, spanning 3-year intervals, from subjects ranging in age fr

An indepth study was carried out over 1 year on all instances of overt heterosexual interactions among acute psychiatric patients on mixed-sex intensive treatment units. Sixteen of the 1060 patients treated on the units were involved in nine instances of overt heterosexual interactions. Analysis of the interactions showed three distinct patterns, called Types 1, 2 and 3. In Type 1 interactions, overt sexual behavior approaches normality. In Type 2 interactions, overt sexual behavior is of a pronounced demonstrative quality but avoids genital involvement. In Type 3, overt sexual interaction is

Aggression can be conceptualized as any behavior, physical or verbal, that involves attacking another person or animal with the intent of causing harm, pain or injury. Because of its high prevalence worldwide, aggression has remained a central clinical and public safety issue. Aggression can be caused by several risk factors, including biological and psychological, such as genetics and mental health disorders, and socioeconomic such as education, employment, financial status, and neighborhood. Research over the past few decades has also proposed a link between alcohol consumption and aggressiv

Based on the Ecological Stress-Based Model of Immigrant Worker Safety and Health, we hypothesized that occupational stress and physical safety would be negatively linked to workers' depression, which in turn, would increase family conflict and decrease youth prosocial behaviors. A total of 242 Latino immigrant cattle feedyard workers from Nebraska and Kansas (90.9% male; M age = 37.7 years) answered questions assessing depression, occupational stress, whether they had ever been injured at work, familial conflict, and youth prosocial behaviors. All four indirect relations among occupational str

People with mental retardation often have behavioral problems. Psychotropic medications are used for the treatment of extremely disruptive behavior disorders in many cases. We surveyed the clinical characteristics and the current status of the pharmacotherapy regimens for inpatients with severe intellectual disabilities and behavior disorders at 8 national psychiatric hospitals. Many of them were men between 20 and 40 years and more than half of them had both extremely mental retardation and high motor ability. Antipsychotic drugs and anticonvulsants were frequently used. As they had more seve

INTRODUCTION: Pathological gambling is a behavioral dependency on hazard games that is classified, in the DSM-IV, among impulse control disorders. According to many studies, the international prevalence of pathological ranges between 2 and 6%. This disorder is often accompanied by a considerable impact on patients' life as well as on the life of people surrounding them. Adolescents and young adults are considered to be a population at risk to develop this kind of behavioral dependency. The problem of pathological gambling is one of the major problems from which the Lebanese population of unive

Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterized by affective-interpersonal features and an impulsive-antisocial lifestyle. Psychopathy commonly co-occurs with other forms of psychopathology, but current understanding of how behavioral features of psychopathy co-occur with, or are distinct from, other mental health problems is limited. In this study, we analysed data from a large sample of young adults to study the relationship between different facets of psychopathic traits and general psychopathology ("p"). Data were collected between 2010 and 2016 and included 1,324 U.S. undergraduate st

Deviant puberty timing has been shown preceding antisocial behavior in adolescence. Within this association, the aim of the present study was to consider the co-occurrence and potential interaction of callous-unemotional (CU) traits, sensation seeking, and parental hostility. In a community based high-risk cohort of adolescents (N = 522; mean age = 14.6; SD = 0.73) puberty timing, level of callous-unemotional traits, sensation seeking, and parental hostility were tested in a cross-sectional design for each sex separately with self-reported delinquent, rule-breaking behavior, and aggressive beh

The problem of suboptimal treatment adherence among patients with dermatologic or other diseases has not been adequately addressed in health care. Despite a wide range of efficacious therapies, nonadherence remains a primary driver of suboptimal clinical outcomes. Novel solutions to address this unmet need can be found in behavioral economics. By leveraging our understanding of human decision-making, we may better promote treatment adherence, thereby improving quality of life and decreasing economic burdens. Behavioral economics has been studied extensively in relation to topics such as health
