The "morning-after pill"--a preliminary report.

Oestrogens increase uterine secretion rate, contractility of tubal and uterine muscle, and closure of the isthmo-ampullar and uterotubal junctions. It may cause either "tubelocking" or accelerated transport, depending on the time the oestrogens are given, and on their dosage. In 72 women, either victims of rape, or woman whose partners had used condoms that failed, oestrogens were given within 48 hours of coitus. The dosage was either 5 mg of stilboestrol 5 times daily for 5 days, or 1 mg of ethinyloestradiol twice daily for 5 days. About 1/2 the women had been exposed to the possible effects …

Factors Associated with the Awareness of and Willingness to Use HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men, Baltimore, MD, 2017-2019.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective tool in protecting persons from acquiring HIV infection through sex or injection drug use. However, awareness and willingness to use PrEP among Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (BMSM) remain suboptimal compared to White MSM (WMSM) in the United States. Our aims were to (1) assess the factors associated with PrEP awareness and willingness to use PrEP among MSM and (2) compare the PrEP perceptions among BMSM versus non-Black MSM. Data were drawn from two cross-sectional behavioral surveys in Baltimore, MD: Behavioral Surveil

Addressing HIV Misconceptions among Heterosexual Black Men and Communities in Ontario.

BACKGROUND: Black males accounted for 19.7% of all the new HIV diagnoses in Canada in 2020, yet Black people make up only 4.26% of the population. Persistent misconceptions about modes of HIV transmission need to be addressed to reduce the relatively high HIV prevalence among Black men. We described the HIV misconceptions held by some HBM in Ontario. We also identified the social determinants that are protective versus risk factors for HIV misconceptions among heterosexual Black men (HBM) in Ontario with a view to building evidence-based strategies for strengthening HIV prevention and stigma r

The relevance of ethnic monitoring in the experience of Haringey Healthcare NHS trust community family planning clinics.

Ethnic monitoring of all new and first attenders in the year to community family planning clinics was carried out by means of an anonymous questionnaire during April to June 1997 inclusive to ascertain whether ethnic minority women attend family planning clinics. A 73 per cent response rate (2664 questionnaires) was obtained. The results showed that women came from a wide variety of ethnic groups and from almost every country in the world. Those of UK European origin were underrepresented. For 28 per cent of women, English was not their first language. A total of 66 languages were recorded. Si

Stalled Progress in HIV Prevention for Trans Women in San Francisco: A Call for Upstream Solutions and Renewed Support for Public Health and Human Rights.

We compare indicators of HIV prevention and care in two rounds of National HIV Behavioral Surveillance for transgender women (NHBS-Trans) in San Francisco. NHBS-Trans recruited 201 trans women in 2019/20 and 339 in 2023/2024 through peer referral methods. The proportion of trans women on ART significantly improved from 90% to 98% ([Formula: see text]=6.33, p = 0.018) over this time period. Additionally, methamphetamine use decreased overall from 32% to 22% (χ2 = 7.08, p = 0.008). Among trans women living with HIV, the proportion reporting injection drug use also decreased from 22% to 11% (χ2 =

Epidemiological trends in HIV infection among female sex workers in Cabo Verde, 2013-2023: evidence from three integrated bio-behavioural surveys.

INTRODUCTION: female sex workers (FSWs) remain disproportionately affected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection globally. In Cabo Verde, where the population HIV prevalence is below 1%, targeted surveillance among key populations is essential to sustain epidemic control. This study aimed to assess temporal trends in HIV infection prevalence, age-specific and geographic patterns, and behavioural and structural determinants of HIV infection among female sex workers in Cabo Verde between 2013 and 2023. METHODS: three cross-sectional integrated bio-behavioural surveys were in 2013 (n=4

Changed Personal Attitudes Predict Sexual Behaviours Among Men Living With HIV in the Era of U=U: A Half-Longitudinal Study.

INTRODUCTION: In the era of 'Undetectable = Untransmittable' (U=U), reductions in condom use and increases in casual partnerships may contribute to elevated risks of coinfection with other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV super-infections among men living with HIV. These trends may reflect a shift in personal attitudes towards sexual behaviour and HIV risk, yet their influence on actual behaviours remains unclear. AIM: To investigate how changes in personal attitudes and safe sex self-efficacy influence sexual decision-making. DESIGN: Two-wave longitudinal study design. METHOD

Bisexuality among Men who have Sex with Men in Sub-Saharan Africa: Findings from the HPTN 075 Study.

Studies among men who have sex with men (MSM) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) focus mainly on HIV epidemiology, revealing little about the diversity within this population. We utilized data from the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) 075 study, to explore demographic and psychosexual characteristics of MSM in SSA who also have sex with women. Persons included in the analyses were aged 18-44 years and assigned male sex at birth and identified as male, reported anal sex with a man in the past 3 months, and had enrolled at one of four study sites (Kisumu, Kenya; Blantyre, Malawi; Cape Town and Sowe

High-Risk Sexual Behavior, Binge Drinking and Use of Stimulants are Key Experiences on the Pathway to High Perceived HIV Risk Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Brazil.

In Brazil, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is currently available for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. As PrEP use depends on an individual's perceived risk, we explored pathways by which potentially modifiable behaviors lead to high perceived HIV risk. Using online surveys (N = 16,667), we conducted a path analysis on the basis of ordered sequences of multivariate logistic regressions. High perceived HIV risk was low (26.3%) compared to condomless receptive anal sex (41.4%). While younger age increased the odds of binge drinking and of condomless receptive anal sex, it was

Medically, Traditionally, and Dually Circumcised Men in Lesotho: Population-Based Measurements of HIV/STI Infections, Sexual Risk Behaviors, and Service Use Patterns.

Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) is an HIV prevention priority in Lesotho, but uptake remains suboptimal. We analyzed the 2014 Lesotho Demographic and Health Survey to assess population-level social, behavioral, and serological correlates of circumcision status, specifically traditional and/or medical circumcision. Among 2931 men, approximately half were traditionally circumcised, and fewer than 25% were medically circumcised. Only 4% were dually (traditionally and medically) circumcised. In multivariate analysis, only medical circumcision emerged as significantly (p < 0.05) protecti
