Evaluation of WaySafe: A Disease-Risk Reduction Curriculum for Substance-Abusing Offenders.

With a focus on reducing disease risk behavior in the community, a six-session curriculum, WaySafe, was developed to increase positive decision-making skills among soon-to-be-released inmates participating in a therapeutic community substance abuse treatment program. The intervention used TCU Mapping-Enhanced Counseling as an approach to focus on cognitive aspects of risky sexual and drug use behaviors in an effort to improve problem recognition, commitment to change, and strategies for avoiding behavioral risks of infections. A total of 1393 inmates from eight different institutions in two st

Nonambulatory persons with profound mental retardation: physical, developmental, and behavioral characteristics.

Although profound mental retardation is generally associated with various organic etiologies that result in substantial cognitive and behavioral deficits, little is known about specific subgroups of persons with profound mental retardation. This study presents data on the physical, developmental, and behavioral characteristics of a group of 203 nonambulatory persons with profound mental retardation residing within a specialized service setting. The results indicate that nonambulatory persons with profound mental retardation have a high prevalence of physical and medical problems along with hig

The association of birth weight with children's anxiety, depression and developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight (LBW) has been linked to the risk of developmental disabilities. However, few studies have been large enough to assess the associations between children's mental health (anxiety, depression) and a comprehensive range of developmental disabilities in a large general children's population, and limited studies have examined dose-response associations. METHODS: This population-based, nationally representative cross-sectional study included 35,379 children aged 6-17 years who participated in the 2022-2023 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) in the U.S from July

Trajectories of genetic risk across dimensions of alcohol use behaviors.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Alcohol use behaviors (AUBs) manifest in a variety of normative and problematic ways across the life course, all of which are heritable. Twin studies show that genetic influences on AUBs change across development, but this is usually not considered in research identifying and investigating the genes linked to AUBs. Understanding the dynamics of how genes shape AUBs could point to critical periods in which interventions may be most effective and provide insight into the mechanisms behind AUB-related genes. In this project, we estimated how genetic influences on AUBs unfold

Racism and Cannabis-Related Problems Among Hispanic/Latine Adults: The Role of Negative Emotions in Responses to Experiencing Racism.

METHOD: We examined the role of negative emotions resulting from racism on cannabis-related problems among 520 (44.2% female) Hispanic/Latine adults aged 18-65 (M = 36.6, SD = 10.3) who endorsed past-month cannabis use. RESULTS: Consistent with minority stress-based models, frequency of experiencing racism was statistically significantly correlated with racism-related negative affect, coping-motivated cannabis use, cannabis-related problems, anxiety, and depression. When entered simultaneously, racism and racism-related negative affect (but not anxiety or depression generally) remained statis

Social anxiety disorder and marijuana use problems: the mediating role of marijuana effect expectancies.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) appear particularly vulnerable to marijuana-related problems. Yet, mechanisms underlying this association are unclear. METHODS: This study examined the role of marijuana effect expectancies in the relation between SAD and marijuana problems among 107 marijuana users (43.0% female), 26.2% of whom met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders-Fourth Edition criteria for SAD. Anxiety and mood disorders were determined during clinical interviews using the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule-IV-L (ADIS-IV). RESULTS: Analyses

The impacts of stress and loneliness on gambling and gaming problems: A nationwide longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Problems related to gambling and digital gaming have been a topic of concern for years. Less attention has been paid to the probable psychosocial factors behind these problems. While previous studies have established links between stress, loneliness, and addiction, there is a lack of longitudinal research investigating how stress and loneliness affect addictive behaviors, including problem gambling and gaming. AIMS: This study uses multilevel mixed-effects generalized linear models to analyze the between- and within-person effects of stress and loneliness on gambling and gaming pr

Interrelated development of autism spectrum disorder symptoms and eating problems in childhood: a population-based cohort.

Eating problems, such as food selectivity or picky eating, are thought to be an epiphenomenon of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Yet eating problems are also common in the general pediatric population and overlap with ASD symptoms. However, the temporal association between ASD symptoms and eating problems is poorly understood. This study examines the bidirectional association between ASD symptoms and eating problems across child development, and investigates whether these associations differ by child sex. Participants (N = 4,930) were from the population-based Generation R Study. Parents repo

Maternal Functioning and Child's Externalizing Problems: Temperament and Sex-Based Driven Effects.

This study examines how maternal adverse parenting (hostility, neglect, low warmth) and psychological distress explain the associations between child temperament factors and externalizing problems. It also examines if these associations differ according to the child's biological sex. The sample consists of 339 school-age children receiving in-school services for conduct problems. Data were collected through questionnaires completed by mothers at 3 time points, at one-year intervals. Results from path analyses revealed that maternal psychological distress partly explained the associations betwe

The association between problem gambling and psychotic experiences: Findings from the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey 2007.

BACKGROUND: Studies on the association between psychotic experiences (PEs) and problem gambling are lacking. Thus, we examined the association between PEs and problem gambling in the general UK population. METHODS: This study used community-based, cross-sectional data from the 2007 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (APMS) (n = 7403). Ten items from the DSM-IV criteria and the British Gambling Prevalence Survey studies were used to ascertain problem gambling among individuals who gambled in the past 12 months. Respondents were classified as no problem (0 criteria), at-risk (1 or 2 criteria) a

Mental Health Literacy, Stigma, and Help-Seeking Behavior Among Black Male College Students in Historically Black Universities.

Studies indicate that mental health literacy (MHL) is low among college students. Previous studies report that male college students score lower on MHL than female college students. MHL is connected to mental health help-seeking behavior. Black male college students are shown to be at higher risk for mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, yet are less likely to seek help for these problems compared with other racial groups. Challenges with mental health can lead to significant negative consequences, such as poor academic performance, social isol
