Systematic review of environmental factors associated with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome occurrences.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging tick-borne viral disease with a high fatality rate among older adults. It is posing a growing public health threat across Asia, with increasing potential for geographic spread beyond the region. Control efforts remain largely confined to individual-level tick-bite prevention, reflecting persistent gaps in understanding the ecological mechanisms that sustain SFTS transmission, particularly how environmental factors shape transmission dynamics across vectors, animal reservoirs, and human populations. We systematically reviewed 291

Relationship between urban spatial form and extreme heat events of major prefecture-level and above cities in China.

Global climate change has increased the frequency, intensity, and scope of extreme heat events, while urbanization has intensified the urban heat island effect. To alleviate the negative effects of extreme heat events, the demand for urban form optimization increases. Treating 326 major prefecture-level and above cities in China as the study objects, and applying the 85th percentile threshold to daily temperature time series spanning the past 30 years, we obtained the number of extreme heat days in each city in 2020, and identified the distribution characte-ristics of extreme heat events. We f

Small heat shock proteins with two alpha-crystallin domains: a new set of proteins in the earthworm Eisenia fetida with differential transcriptional responses to stressors.

Climate change and environmental pollution are two primary challenges facing biodiversity and ecosystem stability. Earthworms are key contributors to soil structure and nutrient cycling, and their molecular stress responses can provide an early indication of soil health impairment. Heat shock proteins are central to the stress response, and small heat shock proteins (sHSPs) are ATP-independent chaperones that limit stress-induced protein aggregation. Because their expression is stress-sensitive, sHSPs are promising molecular markers for soil stress and contributors to thermotolerance. Eisenia

Resilience of black-boned and Thai native chickens to heat stress: Implications of temperature-humidity index for sustainable egg production.

As climate change intensifies, improving heat tolerance has become an important objective for sustaining poultry productivity in tropical and subtropical environments. This study evaluated the effects of the temperature-humidity index (THI) on monthly egg production and genetic parameters in black-boned and Thai native chickens, with an emphasis on identifying heat stress thresholds and genotype-specific responses. A total of 136,816 monthly egg production records from 3,680 black-boned and 7,850 Thai native chickens were analyzed using a repeatability test-day model. Heat stress onset was obs

Filling the Gap: Establishing a Statewide Tick and Tick-Borne Pathogen Surveillance Program.

Individuals in the southeastern United States of America (USA) have an increasing risk of contracting a tick-borne disease. Land use changes, changing climate, and redistribution of both ticks and their hosts make systematic tick and tick-borne pathogen investigation crucial for public health protection. Prior to 2020, South Carolina had limited data on tick species distribution and tick infection rates. In this work, we describe establishment of a sustainable tick and tick-borne pathogen collaborative network for South Carolina. A major determinant of program success was sharing work effort b

From selection signatures in cattle to functional validation in mice: HSPA12B negatively regulates adipose browning and thermogenesis.

Local cattle breeds have been domesticated and adapted to various climatic environments through natural and artificial selection. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying cold adaptation remain unknown. Adipose tissue browning may play a crucial role in this adaptation. Our analysis of 777K SNP genotyping data from 25 local Chinese cattle breeds revealed that the HSPA12B (heat shock protein A12B) gene underwent positive selection in Chinese northern cold-adapted breeds and Tibetan Plateau breeds. The results of the Western blot experiment showed that HSPA12B was highly expressed in adipose

Genomic signatures of cold adaptation in a Himalayan drosophilid.

Drosophila nepalensis is a cold-adapted drosophilid endemic to the Himalayan region. Its ability to survive in harsh, cold conditions makes it a valuable Drosophila model for investigating how adaptation to thermal extremes may influence species persistence under future climate change. Here, we report the first de novo genome assembly of D. nepalensis, based on a hybrid sequencing strategy that combines Illumina short reads and Oxford Nanopore long reads. Illumina sequencing generated 49.88 million 150 bp paired-end reads (∼14.96 Gbp), while Nanopore sequencing produced 1.35 million long reads

IIoT-Based Remote Monitoring System for Temperature, Current, and Vibration Using PLC and Node-RED in a Data Center Cooling Compressor: A Condition-Based Maintenance Framework.

Climate control systems are critical to ensuring the continuous operation of data centers, as they maintain the environmental conditions required by sensitive electronic equipment. In this context, continuous supervision of refrigeration compressors is essential to prevent failures that may compromise thermal stability. This work presents the design, implementation, and experimental validation of a remote monitoring and condition-based maintenance framework built on Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies for air-conditioning compressors used in data centers. The proposed architectur

A national survey of gastrointestinal nematodes in Australian dairy goats using faecal egg counts and deep amplicon sequencing.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) constrain goat health, welfare and productivity worldwide. In Australia, GINs are recognised as the highest-priority endemic pathogens of goats; however, comprehensive national data documenting the prevalence of GINs in goats remain limited. Here, we investigated the prevalence, infection intensity, species diversity and risk factors for GINs in dairy goats. In a cross-sectional study (November 2023 and July 2024), faecal samples (n = 1028) from 68 herds were analysed using the modified McMaster technique. Strongylid species were identified in 500 samples usin

Carceral heat exposure as harmful design: An integrative model for understanding the health impacts of heat on incarcerated people in the United States.

In an era of climate change-driven weather events, extreme heat has become the most lethal form of "natural disaster" in the United States. However, its negative consequences are unequally distributed. Incarceration exacerbates vulnerability to heat-related illnesses and deaths. This article reviews and synthesizes a range of literature related to carceral heat exposure to characterize the complex biological, social, infrastructural, financial, and legal mechanisms through which incarcerated people experience heat-related illnesses and deaths. These mechanisms include the location, design, and
