Maternal abuse history, postpartum depression, and parenting: links with preschoolers' internalizing problems.

The current study examined a temporal cascade linking mothers' history of abuse with their children's internalizing difficulties through proximal processes such as maternal postnatal depressive symptoms and responsive parenting. Participants consisted of 490 mother-child dyads assessed at three time points when children were, on average, 2 months old at Time 1 (T1), 18 months at Time 2 (T2), and 36 months at Time 3 (T3). Maternal abuse history and depressive symptoms were assessed via questionnaires at T1. Observations of responsive parenting were collected at T2 and were coded using a validat

Mental health antecedents of early midlife insomnia: evidence from a four-decade longitudinal study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Insomnia is a highly prevalent condition that constitutes a major public health and economic burden. However, little is known about the developmental etiology of adulthood insomnia. DESIGN: We examined whether indicators of psychological vulnerability across multiple developmental periods (psychiatric diagnoses in young adulthood and adolescence, childhood behavioral problems, and familial psychiatric history) predicted subsequent insomnia in adulthood. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: We used data from the ongoing Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study, a populati

Video-gaming among high school students: health correlates, gender differences, and problematic gaming.

OBJECTIVE: Video game playing may negatively impact youth. However, the existing literature on gaming is inconsistent and often has focused on aggression rather than the health correlates of gaming and the prevalence and correlates of problematic gaming. METHODS: We anonymously surveyed 4028 adolescents about gaming and reported problems with gaming and other health behaviors. A total of 51.2% of the sample reported gaming (76.3% of boys and 29.2% of girls). RESULTS: There were no negative health correlates of gaming in boys and lower odds of smoking regularly; however, girls who reported ga

Mediators, moderators, and predictors of therapeutic change in cognitive-behavioral therapy for chronic pain.

Although cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT) have been demonstrated to be effective for a variety of chronic pain problems, patients vary in their response and little is known about patient characteristics that predict or moderate treatment effects. Furthermore, although cognitive-behavioral theory posits that changes in patient beliefs and coping mediate the effects of CBT on patient outcomes, little research has systematically tested this. Therefore, we examined mediators, moderators, and predictors of treatment effects in a randomized controlled trial of CBT for chronic temporomandibular d

The adolescent outcome of hyperactive children diagnosed by research criteria--III. Mother-child interactions, family conflicts and maternal psychopathology.

The present study reports the results of a prospective, 8-year follow-up study of 100 hyperactive and 60 normal children followed from childhood into adolescence. Ratings of child behavior problems and family conflicts as well as direct observations of mother-child interactions were taken in childhood and again at adolescent follow-up. At outcome, hyperactives continued to have more conduct and learning problems and to be more hyperactive, inattentive, and impulsive than controls. Hyperactives were also rated by their mothers as having more numerous and intense family conflicts than the normal

The effort hypothesis at the heart of the virtuous circle.

This article updates the "virtuous circle" model, which links physical exercise with cognition. This model, which originally focused on connectivity between the salience network (SN) and central executive network (CEN), now also incorporates the default mode network (DMN). It describes a bidirectional dynamic: exercise enhances executive functions (i.e., inhibition, flexibility, updating, planning, and problem-solving), which in turn strengthen long-term exercise adherence. This virtuous circle leads to cognitive, physiological, and motivational benefits through synergistic mechanisms induced

Behavioral Testing Design for Evaluation of Cognitive Disabilities.

Intellectual disabilities (ID) constitute a class of human neurodevelopmental diseases and are a major medical and socioeconomic problem owing to their high incidence and enormous burden to the families of those affected. In the past three decades, mutant mouse technologies have provided powerful tools for elucidating the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying behavioral and developmental alterations related to IDs and for addressing new therapeutic strategies, and major progress has been made revealing previously unidentified genes involved in ID. However, the pathological hallmarks of IDs

Application of Bayesian networks to identify factors influencing acceptability of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis in Guilin, China.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective strategy to prevent uninfected individuals from contracting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), however it must be acceptable to stakeholders in order to be effective. This study aimed to assess the acceptability of PrEP and related influencing factors. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among female sex workers (FSW), people who inject drugs (PWID), and men who have sex with men (MSM) using respondent driven sampling. Factors influencing PrEP acceptability were estimated using ordinal logistic regression and Bayesian networks. The survey inc

Modeling Search Behaviors during the Acquisition of Expertise in a Sequential Decision-Making Task.

Our daily interaction with the world is plagued of situations in which we develop expertise through self-motivated repetition of the same task. In many of these interactions, and especially when dealing with computer and machine interfaces, we must deal with sequences of decisions and actions. For instance, when drawing cash from an ATM machine, choices are presented in a step-by-step fashion and a specific sequence of choices must be performed in order to produce the expected outcome. But, as we become experts in the use of such interfaces, is it possible to identify specific search and learn

Cognitive flexibility correlates with gambling severity in young adults.

Although gambling disorder (GD) is often characterized as a problem of impulsivity, compulsivity has recently been proposed as a potentially important feature of addictive disorders. The present analysis assessed the neurocognitive and clinical relationship between compulsivity on gambling behavior. A sample of 552 non-treatment seeking gamblers age 18-29 was recruited from the community for a study on gambling in young adults. Gambling severity levels included both casual and disordered gamblers. All participants completed the Intra/Extra-Dimensional Set Shift (IED) task, from which the total

An assessment of patient behavior over time-periods: a case study of managing type 2 diabetes through blood glucose readings and insulin doses.

This paper focuses on assessing the behavior of a patient over time periods for managing type 2 Diabetes. In some cases, patients with type 2 diabetes not only behave differently from other patients, but the severity of a given health problem varies even for an individual patient. We focus on understanding how and when patients differ from other patients. In addition, we also look at the diversity that exists within an individual patient especially over time-periods throughout the day. Our aim is to identify such time intervals when a patient may need more targeted care. Thus, for type 2 Diabe
