INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a disease with prominent individual, medical, and economic impacts. Drug therapy and other treatment methods (such as Electroconvulsive therapy) may induce treatment-resistance and have associated side effects including loss of memory, decrease of reaction time, and residual symptoms. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a novel and non-invasive treatment approach which stimulates brain structures with no side-effects. However, it remains little understood whether and how the neural activation is modulated by taVNS in MDD …

This study aimed to describe the practice of electroconvulsivotherapy (ECT) at the University Hospital of Monastir (Tunisia). We conducted a retrospective study of all patients treated by ECT at the University Hospital of Monastir between 2002 and 2013. 80 patients were enrolled in the study (60 men and 20 women, with an average age of 42.1±15.7 years), accounting for 1.4% of all patients hospitalized in Psychiatry Department during the study period. The total number of ECT sessions was 784. In 50% of patients, the primary diagnosis was a major isolated or recurring depressive disorder. The ma

BACKGROUND: Catatonia is a potentially life-threatening but treatable neuropsychiatric condition. Although considered more common in low income countries, data is particularly sparse in these settings. In this study we explore the symptomatology, treatment, and short-term outcome of catatonia in Ethiopia, a low income country.
METHODS: The study was a prospective evaluation of patients admitted with a DSM-IV diagnosis of catatonia. Diagnosis of Catatonia and its severity were further assessed with the Bush-Francis Catatonia Rating Scale (BFCRS).
RESULTS: Twenty participants, 5 male and 15 fe

In clinical studies, electroconvulsive stimuli have been associated with improvements in both depression and treatment-resistant depression. In a previous study, treatment with adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) for 14 days decreased adult hippocampal cell proliferation. Furthermore, electroconvulsive stimuli significantly decreased the duration of immobility following repeated administration of ACTH for 14 days in rats. The present study was undertaken to further characterize the mechanism of treatmentresistant antidepressant effects of electroconvulsive stimuli by measuring cell proliferatio

Mood disorders are a frequent complication of traumatic brain injury that exerts a deleterious effect on the recovery process and psychosocial outcome of brain injured patients. Prior psychiatric history and impaired social support have been consistently reported as risk factors for developing mood disorders after traumatic brain injury (TBI). In addition, biological factors such as the involvement of the prefrontal cortex and probably other limbic and paralimbic structures may play a significant role in the complex pathophysiology of these disorders. Preliminary studies have suggested that se

Treatment for 1 or 14 days by IP injection with the antidepressants, amitriptyline (10 mg/kg), bupropion (30 mg/kg), desipramine (10 mg/kg), GBR 12909 (10 mg/kg), sibutramine HCl (3 mg/kg), mianserin (5 mg/kg), and zimeldine (10 mg/kg), did not affect the number or affinity of dopamine D2 receptors determined by [3H]raclopride binding to rat striatal membranes. Similarly, neither did a single, nor repeated (five times over 10 days), electroconvulsive shock, given under halothane anaesthesia, have any effect on [3H]raclopride binding parameters. By contrast, the noradrenaline and dopamine reupt

In a matched controlled study of 90 psychiatric patient suicides, I found that significantly more of the suicides suffered from chronic schizophrenia (33.3%) or recurrent affective disorder (18.8%) and had made a previous suicide attempt (46.6%). The suicides were young and significantly more were unmarried (84.5%), unemployed (66%), living alone, (55.5%) and depressed (65.5%), and 44.4% had a primary diagnosis of depressive disorder. Of the 75 outpatient suicides, 58% had seen a psychiatrist within the previous week, 61 of the 75 (81.3%) had been admitted in their last episode of contact, and

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To use Google Trends for analyzing public interest in common psychiatric illnesses such as Depression, Anxiety, B … apy (DBT), significantly increased from 2019 to 2023 compared to 2014-2018 (p < 0.05). In contrast, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) had higher search frequency in the earlier period. These findings suggest a growing public interest in mental health conditions and evidence-based treatment options in recent years.
CONCLUSIONS: Limitations of this study include the use of Go …

There is increasing evidence that severe mood disorders are associated with impairment of structural plasticity and cellular resilience. Cum … ed for mood disorders including antidepressants, mood stabilizers, atypical antipsychotic drugs and electroconvulsive therapy have both direct and indirect effects on the glutamatergic system. Given these findings, further research with medications that specifically affect the glutamatergic system is warranted. Recent studies in our lab have shown that riluzole, a FDA appr …
